WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration sought to put the best face on an Afghanistan policy called into question Thursday by the apparent shelving of talks with insurgents and announcement from the U.S.-backed government in Kabul that it will not support the fielding of U.S. forces deep into rural villages, a key goal of the current military strategy.

The announcements from Afghanistan strike at both elements of the twin-track U.S. exit strategy, which calls for a gradual transfer of security authority to Afghan forces and U.S. talks with Taliban insurgents as a seed for larger political reconciliation talks with the Afghan government.

U.S. spokesmen said the administration will press on with trying to reconcile Afghanistan's government and Taliban forces willing to renounce terrorism, despite Thursday's announcement by the militants that they were suspending contacts with the United States. The last substantive talks between U.S. officials and Taliban representatives was in January, and two initiatives to build trust and move toward real peace talks are in limbo.

The Taliban accused the U.S. of failing to deliver on promises and making new demands in the talks, a charge that White House press secretary Jay Carney denied.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai demanded Thursday that U.S. troops leave rural Afghan areas and stay on bases until they finish the withdrawal of troops by the end of 2014. The war effort has been set back in recent days by the weekend slaughter of nine children among 16 people killed allegedly by an American soldier, and earlier by the inadvertent burning of Qurans by U.S. troops.

The Obama administration has endorsed negotiation with the insurgents as the best hope for reaching a political settlement in Afghanistan, and entered secret direct talks with Taliban representatives last year. The talks have foundered before, and several people familiar with the contacts characterized the latest news as a temporary but expected setback. They spoke on condition of anonymity to describe sensitive diplomacy.

"There is no likely resolution to the conflict in Afghanistan without a political resolution," Carney said. "Our conditions for participation in that process by the Taliban have been clear in terms of the reconciliation. Those who would be reconciled need to lay down their arms, renounce al-Qaida (and) promise to abide by the Afghan constitution. And we continue to support that process."

A senior U.S. official familiar with the discussions said U.S. officials expected some statement from the Taliban backing away from talks, and presume that the timing following Sunday's killings is an attempt to gain greater leverage over the United States.

Even before the latest troubles, efforts to negotiate an Afghan settlement were stymied by the Taliban's unwillingness to negotiate directly with Karzai's government, which the militants see as illegitimate. Karzai has complained that he was cut out of the talks, complicating his sometimes rocky relationship with Washington.

The Taliban have maintained they want to negotiate only with the United States, the largest donor and largest military force in Afghanistan. The Associated Press previously reported that the U.S. side had agreed to greater Afghan government participation in future talks. That shift appears to underlie the Taliban claim of a change in terms, although their statement was not specific.

As to whether the U.S. has delivered on promises in earlier negotiations, the Taliban were apparently referring to a plan the U.S. has backed publicly to open a Taliban political office in the Gulf state of Qatar, as the Taliban had requested. That plan, although reluctantly endorsed by Karzai, apparently has been delayed by an internal Taliban debate about a public renunciation of international terrorism. The U.S. has made that renunciation a condition for opening the office.

The Taliban also seek release of five prisoners held at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The AP previously has reported that the U.S. agreed in principle to transfer the prisoners to custody in Qatar, and U.S. officials have publicly acknowledged the idea is in play.

Several Republicans in Congress have denounced the transfer plan, and there has been no apparent progress on it.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the United States has made no decisions to transfer Taliban detainees. She urged continued negotiations with the insurgents.

"We still feel that if there is a process that can be supported, that we ought to do that," Nuland told reporters. "We remain prepared to continue these discussions," with a goal of getting the Taliban and the Afghan government to negotiate directly.

In Afghanistan this week, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta met with Karzai and sought to repair the strained U.S.-Afghan relationship. In the aftermath of the killing, Karzai wants NATO to curtail operations in the countryside and accelerate the planned transfer of security responsibilities to Afghan forces.

Although Karzai previously has said he wanted international troops to transition out of rural areas, the apparent call for an immediate exit is new. Karzai also said he wants Afghan forces to take the lead for countrywide security in 2013, which may or may not be in line with a statement Wednesday from President Barack Obama and British Prime Minster David Cameron. They reiterated that the aim of the U.S. and its allies was to get out by the end of 2014, but stated for the first time that international forces would hand over the lead combat role to Afghan forces next year.

A statement released by Karzai's office said he told Panetta he wants to see "international forces come out of Afghan villages and stay in their bases."

There was confusion among U.S. military officials and diplomats about just what Karzai was asking, and how far apart he is from current U.S. policy. U.S. officials tried to minimize the differences.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said the issue of leaving villages did come up, and that the U.S. viewed it as a reflection of Karzai's "strong interest in moving toward a fully independent and sovereign Afghanistan as soon as possible."

"We share President Karzai's interest," Little said. "We believe it needs to be done in a responsible manner."

The soldier accused of the shootings was part of far-flung "village stability" operations favored by former war commander Gen. David Petraeus and seen as a central element of the counterinsurgency strategy to build trust and skills among local Afghan forces and neighborhood militias. Although the U.S. has walked away from basic pillars of the counterinsurgency strategy, the policy to keep soldiers working and living alongside rural populations has continued.

It was never popular with Karzai, who has said the insurgent problem in his country springs from support across the border in Pakistan, not from unrest in villages. Critics of the U.S. and NATO military plan long have said that a large military footprint, especially in conservative rural districts, encourages violence and bolsters the Taliban argument that they are fighting a foreign occupier.

Candidates spar before key Miss., Ala. primaries

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) ? Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum on Sunday nudged rival Newt Gingrich to step aside, arguing a head-to-head contest between himself and Mitt Romney should "occur sooner rather than later." A defiant Gingrich predicted victories in Tuesday's primaries in Alabama and Mississippi and called Romney the weakest GOP front-runner in nearly a century.

Santorum and Gingrich were campaigning hard two days before what has become a potentially decisive Southern showdown for the Republican contenders battling to challenge President Barack Obama in the fall.

Losing Alabama and Mississippi would effectively spell the end for Gingrich, who has banked his waning prospects on an all-Southern strategy. The former House speaker's lone primary wins have been in South Carolina and Georgia, a state he represented in Congress for 20 years.

A win for Romney in Alabama, where polling shows a tight contest between Romney, Gingrich and Santorum, could all but bring the GOP nominating contest to a close.

The former Massachusetts governor has built a substantial delegate lead against his rivals but has failed so far to win a state in the deep South, home to the Republican Party's most dedicated base voters. An Alabama victory would provide a key breakthrough for Romney among the socially conservative and evangelical voters who have thus far proven resistant to his candidacy.

Santorum, who has battled to be Romney's chief conservative foe, burnished his standing with a decisive win in Saturday's caucuses in Kansas. The former Pennsylvania senator also carried contests last week in Oklahoma and Tennessee, giving him a toehold in the South.

On NBC's "Meet the Press," Santorum said Gingrich's recent stretch of weak showings suggests he has few options left in the race. Gingrich placed third in Kansas and dead last in Wyoming, whose caucuses Romney won easily Saturday.

"The speaker can stay in as long as he wants, but I think the better opportunity to make sure that we nominate a conservative is to give us an opportunity to go head-to-head with Gov. Romney at some point and hopefully that will occur sooner rather than later," Santorum said, adding he wasn't directly asking Gingrich to get out.

Santorum attended Baptist church services in Tupelo, Miss., Sunday morning and had campaign stops scheduled in Meridian and Gulfport later in the day. Gingrich was also campaigning in Mississippi, where he attended church services at the First Baptist Church of Brandon and later headlined a rally there.

During church services, Gingrich stepped forward at the invitation of Pastor Scott Thomas to describe his religious evolution.

Gingrich, who recently converted to Catholicism, never mentioned his new faith but touched on his well-publicized, messy marital history.

"There are periods of my life in which I have sinned," Gingrich said. "I have been very, very fortunate that I have a very, very close relationship with Callista. ... I had to earn being a 68-year-old grandfather by living through things that I would never want my grandchildren to repeat."

Gingrich has been married three times. He had an extramarital relationship with Callista, his current wife, for six years while married to his second wife.

On "Fox News Sunday," Gingrich compared Romney to Leonard Wood, a U.S. Army general from New Hampshire who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920 but lost on the tenth ballot to Warren Harding.

"He's not a very strong front-runner," Gingrich said of Romney. "Almost all conservatives are opposed, which is the base of the party. And I think we are likely to see after the last primary in June, we're likely to see a 60-day conversation about what's going to happen." In August Republicans head to their national convention in Tampa, Fla.

Gingrich also took aim at Santorum, saying his support for earmarks and other spending projects while in Congress had alienated voters from the Republican party in 2006. Republicans lost both the House and Senate that year, and Santorum lost re-election to the Senate by an 18-point margin.

"This is somebody who on a number of occasions had Washington change him ? he admits it and he says it's a team sport. You had to go along to get along," Gingrich said of Santorum.

Romney had no campaign appearances Sunday but was scheduled to attend an event Monday night in Alabama.

Meanwhile, this campaign and an allied independent group were far outpacing his rivals on the air.

Restore Our Future, a super PAC run by former Romney advisers, was spending $1.42 million on ads in Alabama and $973,000 in Mississippi. The Romney campaign boosted its television ad spending from $165,000 to $233,000 in Alabama.

Gingrich and Santorum were also benefiting from air support from well-heeled outside groups.

The Gingrich campaign was running about $125,000 in ads in Alabama and $83,000 in Mississippi, while the pro-Gingrich super PAC Winning Our Future was spending $413,000 on ads in Alabama and $250,000 in Mississippi.

Santorum had only a nominal presence on the air in both states. But the Red White and Blue fund, his allied super PAC, was spending $275,000 on ads in Alabama and $235,000 in Mississippi.

Wins in the U.S. territories Guam, the Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands along with Wyoming helped Romney significantly pad his delegate lead in the race. The Associated Press calculates that Romney now has 454 delegates compared with 217 for Santorum, 107 for Gingrich and 47 for Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

A candidate must win 1,144 delegates to clinch the Republican presidential nomination at the national convention.

Windows on Iran Update ? 16 ? Windows on Iran

Dear All,

Greetings from Washington University in St. Louis. It looks like we are in for a nice warm early spring in many parts of the country. I hope you are all well and your spring is arriving in a timely fashion wherever you are.

There is another celebration we have just left behind ? the wonderful and festive March 8. So, a belated Happy Women?s Day to you all! The Iranian women sociologists celebrated the day with a speaking event in Tehran, here. Iranian Azari women activists celebrated the women?s day with a day of hiking, among other things! Here.

Iranian Azari Women celebrated women's day by organizing a hiking which included discussion of women's rights in the broader political context

Here, in the U.S., my totally amazing friend Safoura Nourbakhsh and a team of writers, translators and scholars just celebrated the Women?s Day with the publication of the second issue of their online publication Zannegar Journal. The journal is a great resource for academics and activists specializing in women?s studies who read Persian and work with that language. Congratulations to Safoura and friends. We look forward to future editions. In the mean time, do check out the first two issues here and don?t forget to share? the link with your Persian speaking friends.

Simin Daneshvar Dies on Women?s Day

In a rare coincidence, Simin Daneshvar, one of the greatest fiction writers of modern Iran, and one of the most articulate defenders of women?s rights, died at her home in Tehran in late hours on March 8th. Born on April 28, 1921 in the historic city of Shiraz (my own hometown), Daneshvar studied Persian literature with Dr. Sayyah (a woman Professor) and the great Iranian Rumi scholar Badi?uzzaman Forouzanfar and received her PhD in 1948 from Tehran University with a thesis focused on the treatment of beauty in Persian literature. Even though Daneshvar had started writing her own prose years earlier, her marriage in 1950 to Jalal Al-e Ahmad , the highly acclaimed and somewhat controversial, Iranian short story writer and social critic, at first appeared as a possibility of keeping her in the shadow of her well-known husband.

Daneshvar's marriage in 1950 to the acclaimed writer and social critic Jalal Al-e Ahmad could have kept her in the shadow of his accomplishments

In 1952, Daneshvar traveled to Stanford as a Fulbright fellow and studied creative writing with the American novelist and Pulitzer prize winner, Wallace Stegner. Later, Stegner who visited Daneshvar and Al-e Ahmad in Tehran, spoke of her in most moving terms. Below, I post a short video that Iranian students made in 2004 about Daneshvar?s visit in 1952 to Stanford. If you don?t speak Persian fast-forward to minute 4:55 where Stegner?s letter about Daneshvar is read in English:

Indeed the tragic death of Al-e Ahmad in 1969 (the same year in which Daneshvar published her major novel Savushun) could have overshadowed her literary achievement completely. In reality, with Savushun, which sold about half a million copies, Daneshvar established herself as one of the most articulate literary voices of the 20th century Iran.

In Savushun, which has been translated into 16 languages,Daneshvar tells the story of Iran during the second world war and Zari, a young woman who over comes her fears and finds her voice

For the English translations of Savushun and her other works, visit Payvand News, here. Daneshvar?s funeral was held in Tehran this afternoon. She was laid to rest in the segment of Behesht-e Zahra cemetery where many other Iranian writers, and artists are buried. For more pictures and a full report on the event, go here.

Hundreds of people walked to the Behesht-e Zahra cemetery where Daneshvar's body was laid to rest next to other Iranian writers and artists

To honor Simin Daneshvar and her legacy of freedom and dignity for all human beings, and to celebrate the recently passed Women?s Day, I would like to introduce to you a woman who is very much alive though sentenced to 11 years in jail for being an advocate for reform, women?s rights and human?s rights: Narges Mohammadi. A graduate in the field of physics and engineering, and an advocate for reform and human rights in Iran, Mohammadi was sentenced to eleven years in jail last September. Over forty women activists like her are in jail in Iran, as we celebrate Women?s Day this year. All highly educated and intelligent, none convicted of any crime other than their dedication to human dignity and freedom which is viewed as a security risk, and equated with spying for the enemy, at present. Read more about Narges Mohammadi, here.

Mohammadi's position as Deputy Chairperson for the Defenders of the Human Rights Center (DHRC) and her dedication to reform have been counted as ?security crimes? against her

A Brief Touch on Iran/Israel War Politic

I would really like to keep war politics out of this window. Somehow it should be dedicated totally to women. But I have come across a piece of exciting news which I would like to share with you. It is the kind that our media seem to always miss: nations? reluctance to go to war.? In a poll conducted this month by Professor Shibley Telhami of the University of Maryland and Israel?s Dahaf Institute, only 19 percent of Israelis said they would support an Israeli unilateral military action against Iran. The poll would have likely made headlines if it were 60 or 70 percent in favor of such a military action. Let us hope the two nations leaders learn from their respective people. Read more about the poll here.

Visual Delight

Time for our visual delight before closing this window. I leave you with two beautiful painting of an Iranian woman artist Jamileh Vafakish.?Have a great week,

Fatemeh

That?s the reason you simply must take it upon yourself to get a details coming from authorities and legitimate resources. Your health and soundness of body depends on it because the world is rampant with bad information in so many areas. Health and fitness aren?t any exclusion, and that is why we have been supplying the following solid info for you personally.

Information on back pain products and yoga is abundant online. The marketing states that yoga can help with your back pain. This danger of this statement is that it?s misleading; yoga won?t help with all back problems. If your back pain is caused by muscle issues, then doing yoga can certainly help. After your exercise routine you may not feel so relaxed because you are sweating, but as soon as you take a shower you should feel the effects of it. Working out might help your system and also thoughts to get diverted through anxiety you may well be sensation. Endorphins and Euphoria work together.

This particular next fantasy is most likely counted about as a possible excuse more than anything else. We are talking about people stating they do not have time for exercise. Really, you only need to take about 15 minutes a couple times a week. Then, a thirty minute workout can be fit in on the weekend, perhaps. That minimal amount is vastly better than nothing at all. Can you squeeze in a walk at work or with your children? You can take a break time walk or jump rope at home or in the office. We can all find 10 minutes a couple times a week. It?s really important to sort the truth from fiction if you are new to working out. This is because you are in the beginning stages of forming your fitness step habit.

You will have to go through a painful re-education later if you form the wrong habits now. Proper habits are crucial to your personal success plus whether or not you continue on with your fitness program.

Can a Backpack Be Chic? [Uniform]

When Eric Rothenhaus landed a gig as director of design at JanSport five years ago, he wanted to make an impression. He would do it by re-creating, down to the seat-belt straps, the very first JanSport backpack (and the first-ever backpack with a zipper) introduced in 1969. Problem: There were no sketches, patterns or even any actual bags available on which to model his re-creation—only a few black and white photographs. But that was all he needed to breathe new life into one of the most iconic geekcessories of all time. More »

Tracking pedestrians indoors using their smart phones

ScienceDaily (Mar. 9, 2012) ? The next generation of smart phone could combine the data from its gyroscopes with a built-in compass to allow you to track your movements when indoors even without GPS. Such a system could be useful for shopping mall managers, factory bosses for worker safety and security and office workers hoping to manage the flow of people through buildings. It could also be used to enable location based services and to help users navigate to specific meeting points or shops.

Research described in the International Journal of Innovative Computing and Applications by Shahid Ayub of Lancaster University and colleagues there and at HW Communications, suggests that the embedded inertial sensors in many smart phones have added the facility to be used for localisation and tracking applications. The primary benefit of using smart phones is that no additional infrastructure would need to be installed for monitoring personnel movements in a wide variety of situations not least staff, equipment and inventory movements in warehouse facilities, shopping malls and factories. In contrast, other technology being proposed would require new equipment such as RFID technologies.

However, smart phones do not yet have the ability to pinpoint their location without recourse to the GPS system, which is not accessible indoors and has the added disadvantage of using up battery power very quickly even if it could be used. Inertial navigation only provides the necessary information relative to a specified starting point the team says. This is useful for anyone with a non-GPS smart phone who wishes to track the route they take when walking or jogging if they specify their starting point. The team suggests that pedestrians indoors could be positioned using a combination of the smart phone accelerometer and an built-in digital compass, something that will become available in future smart phones.

They have now investigated the potential of three different smart phone placement modes: idle, hand held and listening, which could be used with pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) techniques to allow users to record the path they follow or for various kinds of workplace or other monitoring requirements.

"The technique could be used in underground tube stations, airports , train stations where there is no infrastructure installed for tracking or navigation," Ayub explains, "It can also be used for location-based service applications. In big shopping malls it becomes easier to navigate to a target shop or meeting place, while in large offices and across industry it could be used to track employees and control movements of workers in restricted areas."

Sarasota Foreclosures ? Desperate Couple Sabotage Their Own ...

Couple facing foreclosure make poor decisions, sabotaging their own efforts to avoid foreclosure & move on with life.

desperate people Sarasota Foreclosures Desperate Couple Sabotage Their Own Short Sale...With Unexpected Outcome!

Mr. & Mrs. ?X? refused to face reality?and in poor judgment I stayed with them, hoping to help them regain their lives.

Job loss led to no money.

No money led to defaulting on their house payments.

Defaulting led to their contacting me for help avoiding foreclosure.

Avoiding foreclosure took a backseat when couple?s relationship began unraveling.

And when their relationship unraveled, even more illogical decisions made it clear I could not help them.

Click READ MORE to discover how property owners sabotage their own future, blinded by a potentially better solution.

IT WAS INEVITABLE?.

Sarasota Foreclosures ? Harsh Reality!

Some property owners must lose their homes to foreclosure. As harsh as this sounds, please read on for my explanation.

You see, only then will these property owners face reality?when they?re forced out of ?their? homes and into reality.

Many months ago, Mr. & Mrs. ?X? contacted me, desperately wanting my help to avoid foreclosure. They absolutely did not want a foreclosure.

Little did they know, Florida foreclosure laws automatically award deficiency judgment to creditor(s) upon foreclosure, allowing judgment creditors to chase ?debtor? for up to twenty years in Florida.

Before I agree to work with property owners, property owners must convince me they are ready for my help and agree to cooperate, honestly and responsively. They cannot stick their heads in the sand, hoping the problem goes away.

Believe it or not, some people aren?t emotionally stable ? they can?t believe their lives have crumbled; they can?t believe they?re losing their home, the same home in which they sank their life?s savings; and they stick their heads in the sand.

Still others simply want nothing more than to live ?rent free? for as long as they can. Some people even get brazen, believing they have a right to live rent free.

Sarasota Homes For Sale ? Costly Deferred Maintenance Turns Away (Most) Buyers

This couple was serious about selling, though two serious issues plagued this property:

  1. Deferred maintenance - Several roof leaks resulting in 7 or 8 ceiling stains throughout house ? actively leaking for more than 2 years. Naturally, buyers worried about mold. I could stop here. Unmitigated roof leaks alone cause many buyers to reject a property. MOLD scares people. But this property suffered even more costly maintenance: pool deck featured about 5 areas with several missing, cracked pavers popped up; a dirty stained pool and ?bold? paint colors throughout house, etc.
  2. Dirty & cluttered ? In total disregard, property owners made no effort to clean and de-clutter. Please understand, house hunters can understand money issues causing unresolved deferred maintenance. However, house hunters rightfully so should not tolerate a dirty, cluttered property. NO money is needed to clean and de-clutter.

When I sign on to help property owners, I don?t quit when the going gets tough.

I thought I had screened this couple well enough, asking all the right questions and confirming responses. Only then did I created an aggressive marketing campaign that did NOT hide the deferred maintenance. I spoke candidly about the property?s issues to inquiring buyers? agents. I defined the likely buyer and used my marketing to search for the right buyer.

Clearly, buyers and buyers? agents knew ahead of time what they were encountering with this property.

A few price drops later, a strong, patient buyer stepped forward. Seller quickly provided all necessary financial documentation required by the banks.

It was then I discovered a serious challenge to short sale success: seller had failed to tell me the second mortgage he had really was an $90,000 home equity LINE of credit.

Turns out, property owner had been using his house as an ATM, living on the money that climbed to a $90,000 lien against the property.

$90,000 equity line of credit!

Somehow, property owner didn?t understand my clear question weeks earlier. It was my understanding up to that point both ?mortgages? originated to buy the house. Clearly,

  1. I didn?t know property owner had HELOC (home equity line of credit), a whopping $90,000 used for everything but the house.
  2. Banks do NOT allow borrowers to walk away without (increased) cash contribution or promissory note. Rightfully so, banks want more money from people who used their homes as ATMs. If seller had refused to pay or close with lien release only, I politely would have excused myself from the initial listing appointment.

As it was, buyer waited patiently for months, as 2nd lien holder finally came back with 2 payoff numbers ? one lower payoff amount for lien release only and 25% of outstanding balance for full waiver of deficiency.

It was then seller defied logic ? seller insisted buyer pay the ~$25,000 bank required for seller to walk away.

Already, seller had offered to pay fair market value.

Now, seller insisted buyer pay ABOVE market value for seller?s right to walk away paying ZERO. Naturally, buyer canceled and moved on?.

Suddenly, I felt betrayed.

As the listing agent, I had invested money and time to do my job. I?d taken a distressed property in poor ?show? condition and delivered a strong offer to seller.

In my mind, I knew I?d explained the difference between mortgage loan and equity line of credit. I made clear that mortgage is used to buy the property and equity line of credit is taken out later for benefit of house or to buy ?toys? (whether or not a person uses money on which to live).

Makes no difference to a bank.

Either money goes into the property or it doesn?t.

For some strange reason, I chose to stick with property owner and my responsibility to help them avoid foreclosure.

But then life eventually got in the way?and reality smacked (ME) squarely between the eyes!

Yep, that?s right, I am the one who was left shaking his head in disbelief.

I found seller another strong buyer at full list price (aka ?full market value?). Strangely, seller reacted with ambivalence.

No excitement?no relief.

Later, I received an email ? an email ? informing me seller was filing bankruptcy, including the property, in an effort to strip away the second lien ($90,000 HELOC).

Property owner believed reducing his load by $90,000 would be worth the bankruptcy and allow him to afford the house.

Wife had lived in property nearly 24 months rent free, never cleaning or removing clutter.

Husband traveled out of state to find work.

Wife requested divorce.

Husband apparently conjured up bankruptcy in order to try to keep the house he previously had said he couldn?t afford.

With no remorse or hesitation, I clearly admit I wanted to get paid for my endless work on behalf of this property owner. But I also wanted to see a positive ending.

Suddenly, I felt like the banks that were about to be included in bankruptcy ? $90,000 HELOC; $28,000 credit card & yet another big debt on yet another credit card.

What the average person never can realize is that short sales require many stars to align in the night sky. Real estate agents such as I with proven experience helping property owners avoid foreclosure never know if we?ll see a payday for all our solutions, guidance, marketing & sales skills.

This is a realistic peek behind the curtain into the unrealistic world of short sales filled with more emotions that one huge bottle can hold.

How do you react to this lengthy depiction? Property owner?s final words to me were something like, ?Mike, I have to do what?s best for my family. This is nothing personal. You?ve done a great job with what I handed you.?

I hope bankruptcy offers the solution. I exceeded expectations, selling that property 2 different times. My marketing converted. All that was missing was a payday. Oh well, real estate agents are overpaid as it is, right? icon smile Sarasota Foreclosures Desperate Couple Sabotage Their Own Short Sale...With Unexpected Outcome!

Dad-son talk, celebrity tweets key to viral video

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The young American boy sums up what his father does for a living: "You stop the bad guys from being mean." Yes, the father says, but who are the bad guys? The child thinks, then offers a guess: "Star Wars people?"

Though half a world away from this preschooler's American upbringing, the truth is far more sinister.

The bad guys are Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army, a brutal Central Africa militia that has kidnapped thousands of children and forced them to become sex slaves, fight as child soldiers and kill family members during a 26-year campaign of terror.

The father-son conversation is part of a 30-minute video that has rocketed through cyberspace since its release Monday on YouTube. It had been viewed more than 40 million times by late Thursday, propelled by celebrity tweets and fans on Facebook and Twitter, especially teens and young adults.

The video's premise is that people here in America ? and the world beyond ? have the power to stop Kony, if only they are willing to spread the word through the power of social media. Called Kony 2012, the goal is to see Kony captured by the end of this year.

The father, Jason Russell, is the co-founder of Invisible Children, an anti-LRA advocacy group, and the film's director. At one point in the film, he asks his son, Gavin, what he thinks should be done about Kony.

"Stop him," Gavin responds.

Then, in one of the video's many slick moments, the boy's words are quickly echoed by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, where Kony is wanted for crimes against humanity.

"Stop him," Luis Moreno-Ocampo says on camera, "and (that will) solve all the problems."

Despite an International Criminal Court arrest warrant and the deployment last fall of 100 U.S. Special Forces to four Central African countries to help advise in the fight against Kony, until now, few Americans knew who he was.

To those 99 percent, Russell poses this challenge: Make Kony and his crimes so "famous" that governments view it as imperative that the mission to capture him succeeds.

Celebrities ? and teens ? have quickly joined the cause. Data collected by YouTube show the video is most popular with boys and girls ages 13 to 17, as well as men ages 18 to 24.

"Even if its 10 minutes ... Trust me, you NEED to know about this!" tweeted Rhianna.

"This is not a joke. This serious. TOGETHER we can (hash)MakeAChange and (hash)STOPKRONY -- help another kid in need!" Justin Bieber tweeted.

"Have supported with $'s and voice and will not stop," tweeted Oprah.

Invisible Children's critics say the San Diego-based group oversimplifies a complex issue. In a rebuttal posted on its website, the group acknowledges the video overlooks many nuances but says it sought to explain the 26-year-old conflict "in an easily understandable format." It called the film a "first entry point."

"It's something we can all agree on regardless of your political background," said Ben Keesey, the group's 28-year-old chief executive officer. "The core message is just to show that there are few times where problems are black and white. There's lots of complicated stuff in the world, but Joseph Kony and what he's doing is black and white."

Kony and the LRA began their attacks in Uganda in the 1980s, when Kony sought to overthrow the government. Since being pushed out of Uganda several years ago, the militia has terrorized villages in Congo, the Central Africa Republic and South Sudan.

"Kony is a monster. He deserves to be prosecuted and hanged," Col. Felix Kulayigye, spokesman for Uganda's military, told The Associated Press.

Because of the intensified hunt for Kony, LRA forces ? once thousands strong ? have diminished in number, splitting into smaller groups that can travel the jungle more easily. Experts estimate the militia now has about 250 fighters.

Attacks continue, with victims mutilated by machetes, their faces slashed into grotesque shapes. Women are raped and killed. Young girls are forced into sexual slavery.

Jolly Okot was abducted in 1986. The then-18-year-old could speak English, so she was valuable to the militants, who also forced her into sex slavery.

Today, Okot is the Uganda country director for Invisible Children. She said the group is helping 800 people affected by LRA violence to attend high school and college. The program has given hope to kids who previously dropped out of school.

"The most exciting thing about this film is that I'm so grateful that the world has been able to pay attention to an issue that has long been neglected," she said in an interview. "I think it is an eye-opener and I think this will push for Joseph Kony to be apprehended, and I think justice will get to him."

Moreno-Ocampo said it has been hard to raise public awareness about Kony since issuing the arrest warrant against him in 2005.

"Kony is difficult. He is not killing people in Paris or in New York. Kony is killing people in Central African Republic, no one cares about him," Moreno-Ocampo told the AP. "These young people from California mobilizing this effort is incredible, exactly what we need."

Still, the burst of attention has brought scrutiny, including over the ratio of Invisible Children's spending on direct aid and its rating by the site Charity Navigator, as well as criticism of a 2008 photo of three members holding guns alongside troops in what is now South Sudan.

In a response posted on the Internet, the group said it spends about 80 percent of its funds on programs that further its mission, 16 percent on administration and about 3 percent on fundraising. The group said its accountability score is low because it has only four independent voting members on its board of directors, but is seeking a fifth.

Last year, Invisible Children began installing high frequency radios in Africa's remotest jungle to help track militia attacks. People in areas without phones can report attacks on the radios to people who put them on a website called the LRA Crisis Tracker.

The group's website www.kony2012.com prominently displays the faces of 20 disparate celebrities ? from Warren Buffett and Bill O'Reilly to Tim Tebow and Stephen Colbert ? asking viewers to click on them to send a message urging support. It also shows 12 politicians from across the ideological spectrum.

In the video, Russell tells of meeting a Ugandan boy named Jacob who watched LRA fighters kill his brother. The American promises the African child he will do whatever he can to help. Nearly a decade later, Jacob is part of Invisible Children's campaign to bring awareness of the atrocities to college campuses in America and beyond.

The film opens with Gavin's birth, and Russell's philosophy that in today's interconnected world, "where you live should not determine whether you live." If Gavin, born in American, can have a happy upbringing, Jacob should too.

"At the end of my life I want to say that the world we left behind is one Gavin can be proud of, one that doesn't allow Joseph Konys and child soldiers," Russell says. "A place where children no matter where they live, have a childhood free from fear."

Gavin shakes his blond hair and says: "I'm going to be like you dad. I'm going to come with you to Africa."

Romney takes 3 states, Santorum 2, Gingrich 1

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney won three primaries, Rick Santorum countered coolly with a pair and the Republican rivals dueled for supremacy in Ohio on a Super Tuesday that stretched from one end of the country to the other in the most turbulent Republican presidential race in a generation.

Newt Gingrich won a home-field primary in Georgia, and Rep. Ron Paul looked to three caucus states for his first victory of the campaign season as Republicans choose a challenger for Democratic President Barack Obama.

Romney, who won at home in Massachusetts and in Vermont and Virginia, said, "This is a process of gathering enough delegates to become the nominee, and I think we're on track to have that happen."

Santorum waited until Oklahoma and Tennessee fell into his column before speaking to cheering supporters in Ohio.

"We're going to win a few. We're going to lose a few. But as it looks right now, we're going to get a couple of gold medals and a whole passel of silver," he said.

Ohio was the marquee matchup of the night, the second industrial state showdown in as many weeks for the former Massachusetts governor and the former senator from Pennsylvania.

With the vote tallied from 30 percent of the precincts, Santorum was gaining 39 percent, to 35 for Romney. Gingrich had 15 percent, and Paul 9 percent.

There were primaries in Virginia, Vermont, Ohio, Massachusetts, Georgia, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Caucuses in North Dakota, Idaho and Alaska rounded out the calendar.

In all, 419 delegates were at stake in the 10 states, and Romney's wins, by overwhelming margins, allowed him to pad his earlier lead for the nomination.

He picked up at least 70 during the evening, Gingrich 29 and Santorum 16.

That gave the former Massachusetts governor 273, including endorsements from members of the Republican National Committee who automatically attend the convention and can support any candidate they choose. Santorum had 108 delegates, Gingrich 62 and Paul 25. It takes 1,144 delegates to win the nomination at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., this summer.

In interviews as voters left their polling places, Republicans in state after state said the economy was the top issue and an ability to defeat Obama was what mattered most as they made their Super Tuesday choices.

They also indicated nagging concerns about the candidate they supported, even in Massachusetts, There, one-third of all primary voters said they had reservations, and about three-quarters of those voted for Romney.

Massachusetts is a reliably Democratic state in most presidential elections, but in Ohio, 41 percent of primary voters said they, too, had reservations about the candidate they supported. No Republican has ever won the White House without capturing Ohio.

Gingrich's victory was his first since he captured the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21, and the former House speaker said it would propel him on yet another comeback in a race where he has faded badly over the past six weeks.

Obama, the man they hope to defeat in November, dismissed the almost-constant criticism of his foreign policy efforts and accused Republicans of "beating the drums of war" over Iran. "Those folks don't have a lot of responsibilities. They're not commander in chief," he said. Unopposed for the Democratic nomination to a second term, he stepped into the Republican race with a Super Tuesday news conference at the White House, then attended a $35,800-a-ticket fundraiser a few blocks from the White House.

Ohio was the day's biggest prize in political significance, a heavily populated industrial state that tested Santorum's ability to challenge Romney in a traditional fall battleground. Georgia, Gingrich's home political field, outranked them all in the number of delegates at stake, with 76, a total that reflected a reliable Republican voting pattern as well as population.

Romney, the leader in the early delegate chase, flew to Massachusetts to vote and said he hoped for a good home-state win.

He also took issue with Obama, saying, "I think all of us are being pretty serious" about Iran and its possible attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Gingrich effectively acknowledged he had scant Super Tuesday prospects outside Georgia, where he launched his political career nearly three decades ago. Instead, he was pointing to primaries next week in Alabama and Mississippi, and he told an audience, "With your help, by the end of next week we could really be in a totally new race."

The polls show the president's chances for re-election have improved in recent months, as the economy has strengthened, unemployment has slowly declined and Republicans have ripped into one another in the most tumultuous nominating campaign the party has endured since 1976.

The former Massachusetts governor campaigned into Super Tuesday on a winning streak. He captured the Washington state caucuses last Saturday, days after winning a little-contested primary in Arizona and a hard-fought one in Michigan. He won the Maine caucuses earlier in February.

The victories helped settle his campaign, which was staggered when Santorum won a pair of caucuses and a non-binding Missouri primary on Feb. 7.

Santorum and Gingrich have vied for months to emerge as the sole conservative alternative to Romney, and they battered him as a moderate who would lead the party to defeat in November.

But Romney, backed by a heavily financed super PAC, countered Gingrich's victory in the South Carolina primary with a comeback win in Florida. Last week, it was Santorum's turn to fall, as Romney eked out a win in Michigan after trailing by double digits in some polls 10 days before the primary.

Santorum's recent rise has translated into campaign receipts of $9 million in February, his aides announced last week.

Even so, Romney and Restore our Future, the super PAC supporting him, outspent the other candidates and their supporters on television in the key Super Tuesday states.

In Ohio, Romney's campaign purchased about $1.5 million for television advertisements, and Restore Our Future spent $2.3 million. Santorum and Red, White and Blue, a super PAC that supports him, countered with about $1 million combined, according to information on file with the Federal Election Commission, a disadvantage of nearly four to one.

In Tennessee, where Romney did not purchase television time, Restore Our Future spent more than $1 million to help him. Santorum paid for a little over $225,000, and Winning our Future, a super PAC that backs Gingrich, nearly $470,000.

In Georgia, where Gingrich acknowledged he must win, the pro-Romney super PAC spent about $1.5 million in hopes of holding the former House speaker below 50 percent of the vote, the threshold needed to maximize his delegate take.

While the day boasted more primaries and caucuses than any other in 2012, it was a shadow of Super Tuesday in 2008, when there were 20 Republican contests.

There was another big difference, a trend away from winner-take-all contests to a system of allocating delegates in rough proportion to a candidate's share of the popular vote.

Sen. John McCain won eight states on Super Tuesday in 2008 and lost 12 to Romney and Mike Huckabee combined. But six of McCain's victories were winner-take-all primaries, allowing him to build an insurmountable delegate lead that all but sealed his nomination

Experts say the risks are relatively low, and people can take steps to protect themselves, such as watching what they eat and taking breaks by periodically living outside Fukushima. But risks are much higher for children, and no one can say for sure what level of exposure is safe. (AP) ? Yoshiko Ota keeps her windows shut. She never hangs her laundry outdoors. Fearful of birth defects, she warns her daughters: Never have children.

This is life with radiation, nearly one year after a tsunami-hit nuclear power plant began spewing it into Ota's neighborhood, 40 miles (60 kilometers) away. She's so worried that she has broken out in hives.

"The government spokesman keeps saying there are no IMMEDIATE health effects," the 48-year-old nursery school worker says. "He's not talking about 10 years or 20 years later. He must think the people of Fukushima are fools.

"It's not really OK to live here," she says. "But we live here."

Ota takes metabolism-enhancing pills in hopes of flushing radiation out of her body. To limit her exposure, she goes out of her way to buy vegetables that are not grown locally. She spends 10,000 yen ($125) a month on bottled water to avoid the tap water. She even mail-ordered a special machine to dehusk her family's rice.

Not everyone resorts to such measures, but a sense of unease pervades the residents of Fukushima. Some have moved away. Everyone else knows they are living with an invisible enemy.

Radiation is still leaking from the now-closed Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, though at a slower pace than it did in the weeks after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. It's not immediately fatal but could show up as cancer or other illnesses years later.

The uncertainty breeds fear. Some experts say the risks are quite low outside the 20-kilometer (12-mile) no-go zone, and people can take steps to protect themselves, such as limiting intake of locally grown food, not lingering in radiation "hot spots" such as around gutters and foliage, and periodically living outside the area. But risks are much higher for children, and no one can say for sure what level of exposure is safe.

What's clear is Fukushima will be a test case that the world is watching for long-term exposure to low-dose radiation.

More than 280,000 people live in Fukushima city alone, though some have left, and many more live in surrounding towns, including many of the 100,000 who have been evacuated from the no-go zone.

"People are scared to death," says Wolfgang Weiss, chairman of the U.N. Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, which is studying Fukushima. "They are thinking, 'Tell me. Is it good or bad?' We can't tell them. ... Life is risky."

It hasn't helped that the government has given only the most optimistic scenarios of the risks to avoid mass panic.

Public skepticism of government assurances grew when the man appointed as health adviser for Fukushima prefecture, Shunichi Yamashita, repeatedly said exposure to 100 millisieverts of radiation a year was safe.

Studies have found that cancer risks rise at an annual exposure of 100 millsieverts or above but aren't statistically detectable at lower levels. Below 100, experts can't say for sure whether it's safe, just that a link to cancer can't be proven.

In Fukushima and nearby areas, outside the 20-kilometer evacuation zone, the annual exposure is 20 millisieverts in some places and as high as 50 in others. Before the disaster, people in Japan were exposed to about 1 millisievert of natural background radiation a year; in the United States the average is about 3 millisieverts.

The controversy earned Yamashita a nickname: "Mr. 100 Millisieverts." Toshiso Kosako, a professor at the University of Tokyo's graduate school, stepped down as government adviser last year in a tearful protest of Yamashita's views.

Kouta Miyazaki is among those who have lost confidence in the government.

"Government officials should all come live in Fukushima for several years and bring their families. They're all staying in places where it's safe," Miyazaki says. "We're being told to get radiated and drop dead."

Miyazaki, 40, closed his online business selling Fukushima peaches; he doubts anyone would buy them now. He plans to move away with his 15-year-old son, although that would mean living separately for a while from his wife, who works as a counselor in Fukushima.

The nature of the threat has changed over time. Initially, it was exposure to the large releases of radiation from explosions at the plant. The risk from leaks remains but at a much reduced level.

These days, the main danger is less obvious but just as real: consuming contaminated food and water and ingesting radioactive particles. Radioactive material has accumulated in gutters where rainwater collects and shrubs with leaves that suck in radiation.

The risk is cumulative. The radioactivity in one's body builds up through various activities, including eating contaminated food every day or staying in a hot spot for an extended period.

Schools are restricting outdoor activities, and radiation meters dot the streets. Some people are using their own devices to measure radioactivity.

At area hospitals, thousands of people are on waiting lists to get their radiation levels measured with whole-body counters. One child at Minami Soma Hospital, southeast of Fukushima, was found with 2,653 becquerels of radioactive cesium.

It's a big number, but is it dangerous? Jacques Lochard, an International Commission on Radiological Protection official advising Fukushima prefecture, says the child's exposure could amount to as little as 0.3 millisieverts a year, or as much as 8 millisieverts, depending on how the child was exposed to the radiation.

All most residents know is that their bodies are contaminated. What the numbers mean is unanswered.

Kunihiko Takeda, a nuclear and ecology expert who has been more outspoken about the dangers than many others, says people become less afraid after he explains the risks.

"They are freed from the state of not knowing," says Takeda, who has a blog with instructions on how parents can protect their children from radiation. "They now know what to do and can make decisions on their own."

Lochard says he was sad to hear about a Fukushima woman whose children were too afraid to bring her grandchildren from Tokyo for visits. All the parents need to do, he said, is bring food from home and keep the children indoors.

Still, Lochard says, "There is no safe level. It is a small risk but not zero."

After the 1986 Chernobyl accident, more than 6,000 thyroid cancers clearly linked to radioactive iodine were found in children and adolescents. A study by Weiss' U.N. committee found exposure to iodine was lower in Fukushima than at Chernobyl. Still, parents are worried because the Chernobyl cancers didn't emerge until a couple of years later.

"Nobody can say this is over. I'd be the last to say that," Weiss says.

Mayor Shouji Nishida of Date, a city of 66,000 people in Fukushima prefecture, says his community is preparing for the future by relying less on the central government, and by adjusting expectations. He believes 5 millisieverts of radiation a year ? five times the typical amount of background radiation in Japan ? is a realistic goal.

"We are defining policies to live and coexist with radiation," he says.
