AP-GfK poll shows White House race still tight

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For all the attention it got, Republican Mitt Romney's selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate has not altered the race against President Barack Obama. The campaign remains neck and neck with less than three months to go, a new AP-GfK poll shows.

Overall, 47 percent of registered voters said they planned to back Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in November, while 46 percent favored Romney and Ryan. That's not much changed from a June AP-GfK survey, when the split was 47 percent for the president to 44 percent for Romney.

At the same time, there's a far wider gap when people were asked who they thought would win. Some 58 percent of adults said they expected Obama to be re-elected, while just 32 percent said they thought he'd be voted out of office. Majorities say they expect Obama to win regardless of their level of interest in the campaign.

Yet while partisans generally expect their own candidate to win, Republicans are less sure about Romney than Democrats are about Obama ? 83 percent of Democrats say Obama will be re-elected while 57 percent of Republicans think he'll be voted out of office.

One such Republican, 78-year-old Catherine Shappard of Dallas, said she's been alarmed to see even conservative commentators warning that Obama has a good shot at re-election.

"I think it's close," Shappard said. "A lot closer than I'd like it to be."

After just over a week on the campaign trail, Ryan has a 38 percent favorable rating among adults, while 34 percent see him unfavorably. Among registered voters, his numbers are slightly better ? 40 percent favorable to 34 percent unfavorable. Ryan remains unknown to about a quarter of voters.

Romney put the 42-year-old conservative chairman of the House Budget Committee on the ticket Aug. 11. The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Aug. 16-20.

Romney and Ryan will be crowned as the GOP presidential and vice presidential nominees next week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. The Democrats hold their convention the following week in Charlotte, N.C.

The closely locked contest reflects deep partisan divisions across the country.

Among true independents, those who say they do not lean toward either party, the share of undecided voters is declining, with each candidate picking up new support at about the same pace. However, Romney maintains a small advantage with the group, with the backing of 41 percent of independents to Obama's 30 percent. Some 21 percent still say they support neither candidate.

Among all voters, 23 percent are undecided or say they have not yet committed to their candidate.

One independent voter, Frank Nugent, a 76-year-old retired sales manager from Pittsburg, Calif., said he always gives both parties a chance to win him over ? but not this time.

"Considering what the opposition is like, I can do nothing else but vote for Obama," he said. Part of his dislike for the GOP ticket is due to Ryan, he said, describing Romney's ticket mate as "further right that the bulk of the Republican Party." But while he'll vote for Obama, Nugent said he's disappointed in Obama's record.

Robert Hamrick, 39, from Cedartown, Ga., is going the other way. Although a registered Democrat, he plans to vote for the Romney-Ryan ticket, claiming Obama has been deceptive and failed to make good on his promises on the economy, jobs and government debt.

As for Ryan, Hamrick said: "He's very smart. He knows his stuff. He knows the finance. He can take apart Obamacare with ease." Hamrick is a former nursing home manager who left his job about four years ago in hopes of finding one with more security ? and has been mostly unemployed ever since.

The frail economy, with the unemployment rate hovering at 8.3 percent more than three years after the deep recession officially ended, remains the No. 1 issue. Nine in 10 call it important for them and half of voters say it is "extremely important," outpacing all other issues tested by at least 10 percentage points. Two-thirds in the poll described the economy as poor.

Registered voters split about evenly between the two candidates on whom they'd trust more to handle the economy, with 48 percent favoring Romney and 44 percent Obama. They are also about evenly divided on who would do more to create jobs, 47 percent for Romney to 43 percent for Obama. Among independent voters, Romney has a big lead over the president on handling the economy ? 46 percent to 27 percent.

Romney often appeals to his business background as proof that he could better manage the federal government, and the poll finds that overall, voters are more apt to trust him to handle the federal budget deficit over Obama, by a 50 percent to 40 percent margin.

But it's unlikely that Ryan's background in authoring Republican budgets will boost them as an issue in the campaign. The share of adults saying the budget deficit was deeply important to them dropped from 75 percent in February to 69 percent in the new poll.

Among those who rate the economy as the top concern is Mattise Fraser, a 52-year-old Democrat whose hometown of Charlotte is gearing up for the Democratic gathering. "We're in a crisis situation now," said Fraser, who said she plans to vote for Obama. She says she's a homemaker ? but not by choice. "The economy is crazy. There's no jobs."

Obama holds a clear edge among voters on handling social issues such as abortion, 52 percent to 35 percent, and a narrow one on handling Medicare, 48 percent to 42 percent. Medicare has grabbed a lot of attention as an issue lately, with Ryan's proposals to partly change the program drawing criticism from Obama and other Democrats.

Of those who said Medicare is an extremely important issue, 49 percent say they plan to vote for Obama and 44 percent for Romney.

Obama's approval rating held steady at about an even split, with 49 percent saying they approve of the way he's handling his job and another 49 percent saying they disapprove.

The president remains more positively viewed than Romney, and continues to be seen as more empathetic. Some 53 percent of adults hold a "favorable" opinion of the president, compared with just 44 percent who view Romney favorably. Obama also held a commanding lead among voters as the candidate who better "understands the problems of people like you," 51 percent to 36 percent for Romney. Some 50 percent see him as a stronger leader than Romney; 41 percent see Romney as stronger.

Michelle Obama remains more popular than her husband. Sixty-four percent of adults view her favorably and just 26 percent unfavorably, although that's down from 70 percent favorable in May. Ann Romney's favorable rating is mostly unchanged since May, with 40 percent viewing her favorably, 27 percent unfavorably and nearly a third declining to say.

Thirty-five percent overall say things in the nation are heading in the "right direction," up from 31 percent in June.

Melinda Cody, a 45-year-old undecided voter in San Diego, sees positives and negatives with both candidates ? and says she'll vote for the candidate who does the least bullying. "When they just run a negative campaign, it backfires," she said.

The poll involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,006 adults nationwide, including 885 registered voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9, while it's 4.1 points for registered voters.

Cross Country/Track & Field Earn USTFCCCA Honors - GoMuhawks ...

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -?Both the Monmouth University men's and women's track & field and cross country teams were recognized with United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic All-American honors.

Individual awards on the women's side went to senior jumper Alison Day (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin), along with graduates Jennifer Nelson and Lindsey Walsh. Day, Nelson and Walsh represent the only three female athletes chosen by the Northeast Conference.

The men's team placed Vincent DuVernois on the list for an individual award as well.

Monmouth University Head Coach Joe Compagni said, "We had a great group of nine?athletes qualify for the First Round of NCAA's in the spring. To also have four of our athletes earn Academic All-America honors individually is a great accomplishment for them and for our program."

The women's team as a collective earned All-Academic honors for the 13th year in a row, and the men's team earned the same honors for a third?year.

Compagni said of the team honors, "This is a goal for us as a team each year, and I am proud that both our men's and women's teams earned Academic All-America honors again this year."

Both the men's and women's cross country teams debut the 2012 season at Thompson Park at 9:15 a.m. in Lincroft, N.J.

Canada's New Pointing Syatem, FSW and FSWC - blog*spot

Finally, the specific details of the proposed changes in Canada's FSW Points system is now available online in?Canada Gazette. Please note that it is still a proposal and may still be subject to changes. But most likely, this will be it. That's because the way I see it, what Kenny wants, Kenny gets. ;-)

The following are the possible major changes in?Federal?Skilled Workers Program Points System.

Language Factor
1. Requiring minimum language abilities in order to qualify for the program. The proposal is to set it at Canadian Language Benchmark 7 (CLB 7) for all four abilities (speaking, listening, reading and writing). It's equivalent to IELTS Score of 6.
2. The number of points for the?second?official language (French) would be reduced from 8 points to 4 points. 3. Significantly increasing the maximum points?awarded?for fluency in one official language from 16 points to 24 points. The computation would be as follows:?

CLB 7 = 4 points (IELTS 6)?
CLB 8 = 5 points (IELTS 6.5 for Reading, Writing and Speaking. For Listening it's 7.5)?
CLB 9 = 6 points (IELTS 7 for Reading, Writing and Speaking. For Listening it's 8)?

Age Factor
The proposal is to favor younger applicants by?awarding?a maximum of 12 points for applicants aged 18 to 35 and a reduction of 1 point for every year after 35:

36 years old = 11 points?
37 years old = 10 points?
38 years old = 09 points?
39 years old = 08 points?
40 years old = 07 points?
41 years old = 06 points?
42 years old = 05 points?
43 years old = 04 points?
44 years old = 03 points?
45 years old = 02 points?
46 years old = 01 points?
47 years old = 00 points?

Work Experience?Factor
The proposal is to reduce the total number of points for?work experience?from 21 to 15, and increase the years of experience required to achieve full points, from four years to six.

1 year = 09 points
2-3 yeas = 11 points
4-5 yeas = 13 points
6 + yeas = 15 points

Adaptability Factor
The proposal is to change the adaptability criteria to emphasize factors that are shown to have positive impacts on an immigrant?s economic and social integration. Maximum is 10 points.
10 points - PA Previous?Work in Canada?(min. 1 yr at NOC 0, A, B)
05 points - Previous?study in Canada?? PA
05 points - Previous?study in Canada?? accompanying spouse/partner?
05 points - Previous?work in Canada?? accompanying spouse/partner
05 points - Arranged employment
05 points - Accompanying spouse/partner?s official language (CLB/NCLC 4) 05 points - Relative in Canada (18 years or over)?

The additional points (3-5) from Spouse's education is no longer included.?

Education Factor
Education points would be?awarded?based on the equivalent Canadian educational credential and points would be redistributed in recognition of the credential?s relevance in the Canadian labour market. Designated organizations would work on a case-by-case basis to authenticate credentials obtained in foreign jurisdictions and determine their equivalent value in Canada. 25 points - Doctoral level
23 points - Master?s level or professional degree
22 points - Two or more post-secondary credentials, one of which is a three-year or longer post-secondary credential

21 points - Three-year or longer post-secondary credential
19 points - Two-year post-secondary credential
15 points - One-year post-secondary credential?
05 points - Secondary school?

Without assessment from the organization designated by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, you can't claim points for the education factor.

Pass mark would still be 67 points.?

IMPORTANT: If you have a valid IELTS Examination Score but with score of lower than 6 in any of the four areas, it will no longer be valid. You must take schedule another examination. No word yet if the new requirement would now be the Academic Module. We will keep you posted.

Inside the PAT testing Birmingham companies

Request Reprint | Print | About Author | Report Problem | Tweet This Portable Appliance Testing is a mandatory process in the nations of the UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, etc. to ensure workplace and domestic safety. It is a certified test, given by authorised technicians designed to test the safety standards of the appliances in use. It was a regulatory directive issued through the Health and Safety at Work Act, dated back to 1974 when the legislation mandated testing of electrical equipments regularly. Since then, a league of PAT testing Birmingham companies has come up to offer PAT testing services. The installation services of electrical appliances are provided by the electrical installations Birmingham agencies that are similar to the former.

Later in the year 1999, further regulations were incorporated to the existing list to ensure complete safety of the workers in business organizations. Since then, the companies have introduced a range of new services to comply to the new regulations. The technicians working at the electrical installations Birmingham firms test the in-house appliances to check if they are in perfect working condition. Testers are trained and equipped with required knowledge and skills. The employees assigned by the PAT testing Birmingham companies have sufficient knowledge and understanding about the portable appliances powered by electricity. It is one of the decorum of the government that the tester should have a certified degree to perform the test. Hence, the employees have extensive knowledge about mechanical damage, thermal systems and electrocutions. Thus, the PAT testing Birmingham company technicians can easily judge if an equipment is a gimmick or an efficient one. There are four typical situations depending upon which the electrical installations Birmingham companies design their service packages. Type testing is the first and very basic category in which the appliances are tested to make sure that they are compliant to the designated requirements. The second category of testing performed by the PAT testing Birmingham company is the production caliber. In this, the appliances are tested at the production stage so that everything is ascertained before the items are deployed to different retailers for selling. Post repair test is another kind of examination where the units are studied when they fail to deliver satisfactory services, soon after a repair job. During the test, the electrical installations Birmingham agents probe into the system to check if the repair job was sufficient to restore the system back to order.

In-service test is another kind where a preliminary examination is run, followed by the continuity and insulation tests. Finally, the functions of the units are checked to affirm that the item is in good working condition. If the units fail the test, then they are certainly not up to mark in terms of its mechanism. The companies take a negligible sum of money as remuneration for the service rendered. Most of the companies operate online through the websites. Contact can also be established with them through the phone lines. They usually respond to calls made at anytime of the day.

Are you in search of a notable electrical installations Birmingham company? We are one of the prominent PAT testing Birmingham companies offering PAT testing and installations services for a reasonable price.

Charlottesville Residents Rally in Washington D.C. For Women's Rights

August 18, 2012

The Charlottesville Rally Riders rode back into town Saturday evening after spending the day in Washington D.C. fighting for women's rights.

"Part of the reason for this rally was to say to the U.S. Congress that we expect to see them taking acting on things that really matter to this country and leave women's bodies out of it.," said protester Gail Hyder Wiley.

A reception organized by Planned Parenthood was held for the women and men who returned from the rally. Decorated umbrellas provided more than shade, they also sent a message.

Ralliers say rights should be given to all and not just a select group.

"We're not a pre-existing condition in the health care system. We are women and all of us are born of women," said protester Judy Johnson.

"There was talk about don't pull the plug on grandma, who is pulling the plug on grandma now and mom and sister? It is just not right," said protestor Kobby Hoffman.

The women say they are tired of not having equal rights and they hope that will all change.

Almost 60 women from Charlottesville attended the rally in Washington.

Please help us with our letter writing campaign. Please write the Roman Catholic Pope of Rome and ask him to condemn the Corrupt Sheriff Joe Arpaio for embracing the culture of death and violence in his jail. Arpaio makes fun of the mysterious Mexican immigrant deaths in his prison.

paper - pencil - pen: Life After the MFA: Exploring Publication Options

Well folks, my 150-page thesis manuscript made it in by the mid-August deadline. Suddenly it seems those two years in the MFA program at USF went past in a flash! I'm staving off a little postpartum slump (meant metaphorically, of course) as I consider my career options and stare down my student debt. Though the freelance budget at Patch was severed I'm still hanging on with the Press Democrat, and I accepted a contract position teaching creative writing with Take My Word For It in a couple of local elementary schools. While I search for full time work, I am excited to create a spreadsheet of essays and stories to revise and submit for publication.

In the spring USF had a panel on publishing, including two literary agents, two editors (of a literary journal and an independent publisher), and an author. The latter, Wendy Tokunaga, an '08 USF alum, said the advance she got on two books paid for her MFA. After "long years of rejection" she published those first two novels through an agent, but with low sales she veered from the traditional route with three e-books, which McSweeney's Editorial Director Ethan Nosowsky predicted will "take the larger portion of the market." Despite her success, Tokunaga, author of Marriage in Translation: Foreign Wife, Japanese Husband, admitted she makes more money editing manuscripts than writing fiction.

Penny Nelson, an agent with Manus & Associates Literary Agency, encouraged writers to try the traditional path, but agreed we don't have to be discouraged by rejection since there are other options. She said some credentials, aside from the literary merit of submissions, help catch her eye: She looks for an MFA, who a writer studied under, any awards (no matter how small), and prior publication, as well as journalism experience, blog hits and expertise/platform (for nonfiction). It's harder to sell everything these days, it seems. She said people go online for travel books (how to, at least). She said it's harder to sell a book of short fiction than it is poetry. (Academic Director Kate Brady suggested University presses and literary contests.) And even when she reads something good she asks if it serves better as a book and not a long-form feature article in a magazine. Her advice: get your best stories and essays into literary journals first.

Laura Cogan, editor of ZYZZYVA, The Last Word: West Coast Writers & Artists, looks for a "distinctive voice that is surprising, not cliche" in fiction, nonfiction and poetry. It's one of many lit journals where I'll submit my own work--a collection of nine personal essays. One of them was already accepted for publication in the 2013 fall issue of South Loop Review: Creative Nonfiction + Art, which I heard from after entering (and not winning) a nonfiction contest. So I actually paid to have my work published! Though most journals don't pay, except in journal copies, the possible attention from universities, agents and even publishing houses can benefit writers.

One such success is exemplified by a fellow student in my cohort, the brilliant writer Courtney Moreno. Her story, "Help is on the Way: Tales of an Ambulance Driver," first appeared in the LA Weekly and then published as "Fed to the Streets" in The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2010 anthology by McSweeney's, founded by author Dave Eggers. One year into her graduate studies, Moreno was solicited by the San Francisco independent publisher for more work--did she have anything else she was working on, they wanted to know. Um, yes, an MFA thesis. Well, she got an offer and is now working with editor Ethan Nosowsky to turn her thesis into a book.

"There's no manuscript that doesn't need editing," said Nosowsky, who wants to make sure the author and publisher are "talking about the same book." Even when a manuscript is a mess, if he knows exactly what to do with it he'll talk with an author about what it needs. If all goes well, they'll make a deal. But if he can't articulate what needs help, he must reject the book.

That's where a developmental agent can be helpful, said agent Nelson, as some agents do edits before sending the book to an acquisitions editor. Elizabeth Kracht, an agent with Kimberley Cameron & Associates (where I interned as a first reader), wants to help authors. But with hundreds of submissions weekly, that kind of time can be tough to find. She said she's "debut-author prone," but recommended getting professional editing done so the submission to an agent is polished.

After the panel my fiction professor, Karl Soehnlein, agreed there are many more ways to get published than the traditional model, and self-publishing doesn't carry the stigma it used to. He said hearing back from a literary agent can be incredibly slow, and you'll most likely hear "no." Even when you do get published, these days publicity budgets are slim and authors can often do better with their own PR. He said it can be a trade-off--the more they pay for your book, the better you have to do to pay back your advance. An upside to doing your own book tour, rather than one paid for by the publisher, is you can choose places where you know people. Not only does it cut down on hospitality costs, but friends can bring in audiences and help spread the word by posting fliers, etc. He also encouraged us to think beyond the financial benefits of publication to things like solicitations for anthologies and garnering a teaching position.

Report: Former LSU star Mathieu in rehab

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Former LSU star Tyrann Mathieu has entered a drug rehabilitation program in Houston since being dismissed from the Tigers, according to a television report.

Fox 8 reports that Mathieu's adoptive father, Tryone Mathieu, says that the 20-year-old star cornerback and punt returner known as the "Honey Badger" has been at the Right Step recovery center and is being counseled by former NBA player John Lucas.

Tyrone Mathieu says his son is committed to restoring his health and won't play football until he is confident that his rehab is complete. That may rule out the possibility of Mathieu transferring to a school at the FCS level and playing this season, after which he would be eligible for the NFL draft.

No one from Mathieu's family appeared on camera in the New Orleans television report. Lucas has not returned a phone message left by The Associated Press.

LSU has said that about 20 college football programs have asked for permission to speak with Mathieu about transferring. Mathieu has visited McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., where classes began Wednesday.

Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La., also has been granted permission to speak with Mathieu but has not met with him yet. Classes at Nicholls begin Aug. 22.

It remains unclear what Mathieu's future may hold if he sits out this season entirely. LSU coach Les Miles has declined to close the door entirely on the possibility, however remote, that Mathieu could play for LSU again in 2013. Miles said last Friday, when he announced Mathieu's dismissal, it would make more sense for Mathieu to transfer. Since then, he has said he can only guarantee Mathieu won't be playing for LSU in 2012 and declined to speculate beyond that.

Miles and LSU officials have also said that they've offered Mathieu whatever help he needs to transfer.

The only public statements Mathieu has made since his dismissal consist of a few posts on the social network website Twitter, where he has also changed his avatar from a photo of himself in an LSU uniform to a motto displayed in white letters on a black background, reading: "Be yourself. There is something that you can do better than any other. Listen to the inward voice and bravely obey that."

One of his recent posted messages says: "Patience.... Sometimes you have to stop doing what is easy and begin to do the things that are hard."

Mathieu emerged as one of college football's biggest stars in 2011, his sophomore season, and was a Heisman Trophy finalist.

He also won the Bednarik Award as national defensive player of the year last season. He scored four touchdowns ? two on punt returns and two on fumble returns ? intercepted two passes, caused six fumbles and recovered four.

He was expected to play a leading role in LSU's effort to return to a second consecutive national title game.

Last season, LSU's only defeat was a 21-0 loss to Alabama in the BCS championship game.

Mars rover gets ready for its first laser blasts

NASA's Curiosity rover hasn't rolled its wheels on Mars yet, but scientists have already figured out what the rover will be doing and where it'll be going through the end of the year.

On Saturday night, Curiosity is due to use its laser blaster for the first time, taking 30 shots at a poor little rock known as N165. In the coming days, the rover also will analyze the rocks that have been exposed at a blast mark known as Goulburn Scour, which was left behind by Curiosity's rocket-powered sky-crane descent stage during the Aug. 5 landing. And it will take its first test drive, going about 10 feet (3 meters) to limber up for its first long-distance journey.

Over the course of a month or two, the six-wheeled, nuclear-powered rover will make a trek to a spot that's been nicknamed Glenelg, about a quarter-mile (400 meters) east of the landing site, project scientist John Grotzinger told reporters during a teleconference today.

"With such a great landing spot in Gale Crater, we literally had every degree of the compass to choose from for our first drive," Grotzinger explained in a news release. "We had a bunch of strong contenders. It is the kind of dilemma planetary scientists dream of, but you can only go one place for the first drilling for a rock sample on Mars. That first drilling will be a huge moment in the history of Mars exploration."?

Glenelg is the spot where three types of geological formations come together. Heading to Glenelg means the rover will have to retrace its route to move on to its prime target, a 3-mile-high (5-kilometer-high) mountain known as Aeolis Mons or Mount Sharp. But Grotzinger and his colleagues think the scientific payoff will be worth it.

Grotzinger told reporters that the place name Glenelg, which is of Gaelic origin, was particularly apt for the Martian site because it's a palindrome, spelled the same way forward and backward. Similarly, Curiosity will have to double back toward its landing site after visiting Glenelg on Mars. "We get it coming and going," he said.

After Glenelg, Curiosity will head toward Mount Sharp. It could be the end of the calendar year before the mountain trek begins in earnest, and Grotzinger has previously estimated that getting to Curiosity's first major target amid the mesas and buttes at the base of Mount Sharp might require a full Earth year. Curiosity's $2.5 billion primary mission is due to last almost two Earth years, or one complete year on Mars. However, most team members expect the rover to last far longer.

A photo from the Curiosity rover's Mastcam imaging system shows rover hardware in the foreground and highlights the location of a rock known as N165, which is the first target for the ChemCam laser zapper.

'Target practice' for laser zapper
The mission's purpose is to analyze Martian rock and soil to determine whether the planet's chemistry could have supported life in Mars' ancient past, when the planet was wetter and warmer than it is today. The car-sized, 1-ton Curiosity rover has 10 scientific instruments to do the job ??including its ChemCam imaging system, which incorporates a laser powerful enough to vaporize tiny spots of rock.

N165, a 3-inch-wide (7.5-centimeter-wide) rock sitting on the ground about 10 feet (3 meters) from the rover, would be the first target for the laser zapper, said Roger Wiens, a planetary scientist from Los Alamos National Laboratory who is the ChemCam team's prinicipal investigator. About 30 laser blasts would be aimed at the rock over the course of 10 seconds.

"This is sort of target practice, if you will," Wiens said.

Each 14-millijoule laser pulse briefly focuses the energy equivalent of a million light bulbs onto an area the size of a pinhead. The flashes of light given off by the mini-blasts of plasma are captured by ChemCam's imaging system and routed through fiber optics to a spectrometer inside the rover. By checking the spectrum of the light, scientists can figure out the composition of the material vaporized by each zap.?

Wiens said he expected N165 to be the kind of garden-variety basalt rock typically found on Mars. He and his colleagues are more interested in finding out whether ChemCam can discriminate between the rock's dusty coating and the minerals beneath the coating. That's why the rock is being blasted so many times in succession. The first results could be revealed early next week, Wiens said.

"Our team has waited eight long years to get to this date," Wiens said.

Instruments coming to life
Grotzinger said the checkouts for all of Curiosity's scientific instruments are going well. Just today, the neutron-generating device known as DAN (Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons) was turned on while another instrument called RAD (Radiation Assessment Detector) monitored the radiation that DAN was giving off, he said.

The rover's weather station, dubbed REMS (Rover Environmental Monitoring Station), is already providing temperature readings: Grotzinger said the high temperature on Mars over the past day was just above freezing (276 Kelvin, which is 37 degrees Fahrenheit or 2.85 degrees Celsius).

"It's been exactly 30 years since the last long-duration-monitoring weather station was present on Mars," he said. "That was when the Viking 1 lander stopped communicating with the earth. That was back in 1982, so 30 years later we're happy to be on the surface doing that monitoring again."

The instrument checkout should be complete "toward the end of next week," Grotzinger said. At one time, he had suggested that the blast marks left behind by the descent stage, just yards away from the rover's landing site, might be a good first target for detailed sampling. But today, Grotzinger said that the exposed bedrock at Goulburn Scour appeared to be a loosely held-together combination of material. "This rock is really not a good one for the first drilling," he said.

So instead, scientists will examine the blast marks with Curiosity's cameras, perhaps including ChemCam, and then most likely move on. The blast marks have been given names that reflect their fiery genesis: Goulburn, Burnside, Hepburn and Sleepy Dragon. "The theme here is heat," Grotzinger said.

The first samples could well be scooped from the Martian surface at some point between the landing site, which is in a quadrant that's been nicknamed Yellowknife, and the Glenelg site, Grotzinger said. Those samples could be ground up and deposited into a couple of onboard chemical laboratories called CheMin and SAM (which stand for "Chemistry and Mineralogy" and "Surface Analysis at Mars," respectively). "That first scooping activity is really important," Grotzinger said.

Imagery from Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows the area around Curiosity, including the blackened marks of the crash site for its sky-crane descent stage, and the rover's first destination, known as Glenelg.

NASA / JPL-Caltech / Univ. of Ariz.

A wider-angle view from orbit shows the Curiosity landing site, the Glenelg geological site, and the approach to a 3-mile-high mountain known as Aeolis Mons or Mount Sharp.

The soil sampling efforts should provide the confidence needed to go ahead with the first rock drilling operation at Glenelg, he said.?Once the rover arrives at Glenelg, it's likely to spend at least a month studying the intriguing variations in the site's geology, which could shed light on the changes that shaped 96-mile-wide Gale Crater over the course of eons, Grotzinger said.?

"Sometime toward the end of the calendar year ... I would guess then we would turn our sights to the trek toward Mount Sharp," he said.

Mount Sharp is considered prime territory for Curiosity's scientific prospecting because its layers of rock are thought to record billions of years' worth of geological history. Detailed analysis of the rock chemistry could reveal what happened to Mars between the warm, wet environment that's thought to have existed long ago and the cold, dry environment that exists today.

Several Steps To Achieving Internet Marketing Success | Business ...

We have all heard about the success stories of internet businesses like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and other huge sites, but do you know what they all have in common? They started as small, basic business ventures and used internet marketing to propel their name and status. And believe it or not, they all took a simple approach to marketing, an approach that we will discuss here.

Listing

Take advantage of free online local business directories, such as Google Local Business Center, Yahoo! Local, Local.com, SuperPages, YellowPages.com, InfoUSA, Localeze and Yelp. Listing your business in these directories will not cost you any money and you should see a boost in your website visitors. The visitors referred to your website from these sources, are also likely to be interested in your product or service, so conversion should be easy.

To promote your business with internet marketing, look in to free listing pages online. You should not have to pay any fees to get your website included in search results or business listings. There are many free business directories, including SuperPages, YellowPages, InfoUSA, Yahoo! Local and Yelp. Sites like these will help deliver traffic to your business? website.

When looking for more customers, do not forget about your local options. Local customers can find your business much easier if you use directories offered by sites like Google, Yahoo, and Superpages to create local listings for your site. Be sure to include descriptive details, such as location and hours on your local listing.

Get started listing your business with different directories online. You should list all of your contact information including your address, phone number, email address, and website. This will help more customers see your business and will direct more people to your website. Customers will also have all the information they need in case they want to contact you.

A customer needs to feel comfortable when deciding to purchase a product online. A positive way to help them feel comfortable is to make it easy for them to contact you should they need to. Listing a telephone number, email address and physical address may be all it takes for the customer to feel comfortable enough to place an order.

Make yourself appear trust worth and make your customers feel comfortable on your website. Try giving them access to your actual physical business address. Many people are dissuaded or skeptical of people with P.O. boxes, so try just using your physical business address. To help them feel more comfortable, try listing your business and cell phone numbers, so that they can rest assured that they can call you if they need help.

Make sure to get your business out there by listing it, along with your contact information, on as many free business directories as possible. This way an increased number of potential customers will see your business, and this will hopefully drive more people to contact you through your website.

While you might not be the next Mark Zuckerberg, you can be a flourishing businessperson making a healthy income, setting your own hours and taking orders from no one. Use these tips to get started and to get the ball rolling. With some effort, things will snowball, and your business will thrive.

(AP) ? A man who had been a volunteer at a community center for gays walked into the lobby of a conservative political organization, made a negative comment about what the group stands for, pulled a gun and opened fire, authorities said.

But the shooting Wednesday morning at the downtown Washington headquarters of the Family Research Council left only one person injured: the security guard. And after being struck in the arm, he helped wrestle the gunman to the floor, thwarting an attack that police fear could have turned deadly.

"The security guard here is a hero, in my opinion," D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said of Leo Johnson, who was conscious and in stable condition at an area hospital after the shooting.

Police and the FBI were investigating why the armed man, identified as 28-year-old Floyd Lee Corkins II of Herndon, Va., entered the front lobby of the conservative group, argued with the guard and opened fire. But one law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the suspect made a negative reference about the group's work and what it stands for before shooting.

Corkins was being held on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, the FBI said Wednesday night. Bill Miller, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, said Corkins would likely appear in court Thursday but gave no further details.

Television news footage showed the suspect, a large man with a shaved head and an unbuttoned striped shirt, being led to a car with his hands restrained. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer. Corkins was carrying a 9mm Sig Sauer handgun that authorities have determined was purchased and owned legally, said Richard Marianos, special agent in charge of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' Washington field office.

Though authorities did not publicly reveal a motive, advocacy groups across the ideological spectrum condemned the violence, with some casting it as a hate crime. President Barack Obama was concerned about the well-being of the guard, a White House spokesman said, and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also said he was appalled.

"Today's attack is the clearest sign we've seen that labeling pro-marriage groups as 'hateful' must end," Brian Brown, the president of the National Organization for Marriage, said in a statement.

The Family Research Council, headquartered in a busy downtown tourist district, strongly opposes gay marriage and abortion and says it advocates "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion." The group maintains a powerful lobbying presence on those causes, testifying before Congress and reviewing legislation. Its president, Tony Perkins, said the group's main concern was with the wounded guard.

Corkins, who had been volunteering recently at a community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, made a negative comment about the organization's activity before the shooting, but the reference was not specific, one of the law enforcement officials said. Two law enforcement officials said Corkins was carrying sandwiches from Chick-fil-A, a fast-food chain whose president's public opposition to same-sex marriage recently placed the restaurant at the center of a national cultural debate.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigating is continuing.

Johnson, who was taken to the hospital Wednesday, was expected to survive.

"The security guard did a phenomenal job, above and beyond what he was supposed to do in this particular situation," said Jacqueline Maguire, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Washington field office.

Corkins had been volunteering for about the past six months at The DC Center for the LGBT Community, said David Mariner, executive director of the community center, in Northwest Washington. He usually staffed the center's front desk on Saturdays, and his most recent shift was about two weeks ago.

"He always struck me as a kind, gentle and unassuming young man. I'm very surprised that he could be involved in something like this," Mariner said.

Authorities seized Corkins' car at a northern Virginia Metro station, and were going door-to-door interviewing neighbors, several of whom spoke highly of the family.

"They were always so sweet and so nice," said Stephanie Meyer, who lives a few doors down. "They are awesome people. We never had any issues."

According to a U.S. Defense Department official, Corkins is not a member of the Air Force, but he may have lived at Andrews Air Force base in some other capacity in the past, possibly as a dependent or family member. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to provide personal information.

Amy Biondi and her husband Steve were visiting Washington from Long Island with their daughter and a friend and tried to ask officers for help with a parking meter when they were told there was a situation they had to deal with. The door to the FRC was opened, and an officer could be heard repeatedly shouting, "Put the gun down, put the gun down."

"Next thing you know there are police officers swarming the area," said Biondi, 45, a massage therapist from St. James, N.Y.

The family didn't get a close look inside, but they said the man that officers were talking to seemed to comply immediately.

Groups aligned with conservative causes lambasted the shooting, but so did a coalition of about two dozen organizations promoting gay, lesbian and transgender rights, which said it rejected and condemned the attack.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the president, who was traveling in Iowa Wednesday, was informed of the shooting shortly after 1 p.m.

"The president expressed his concern for the individual injured in the shooting and his strong belief that this type of violence has no place in our society," Carney said.

Romney said in a statement that he was appalled. "There is no place for such violence in our society," he said. "My prayers go out to the wounded security guard and his family, as well as all the people at the Family Research Council whose sense of security has been shattered by today's horrific events."

The headquarters of the FRC is in the city's bustling Chinatown neighborhood, near the Verizon Center, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and several museums, restaurants and shops.

In the past month, the FRC has forcefully defended Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy for his remarks in opposition to gay marriage.

Mariner said he did not know Corkins well or have any conversations with him about the Chick-fil-A controversy or other political issues of interest to the gay community.

"I really only talked to him about volunteering, so I couldn't say anything about anything else," Mariner said.
