Prometheus Blu-ray specs unveiled, arrives with seven hours of extras October 9th (video)
While Ridley Scott's latest flick is already available on just about every downloadable movie store you could name, Prometheus is still a few weeks away from making its debut on disc and now Fox has officially released all the details. The extras listed in an earlier leak appear to be accurate, with a Second Screen iPad app that promises access to character Peter Weyland's archives, while much of the 15 minutes or so of deleted and alternative scenes have already been posted on the internet (search around if you absolutely must know what else there is and can't wait / don't want to spend the cash). Arriving October 9th, there's a four disc set with both a Blu-ray 3D edition and bonus extras disc with featurettes for a total of seven hours of bonus materials, while the two disc set trims it to just one Blu-ray and DVD / digital copy. The two disc set is currently selling for $24.99 on Amazon, while the four disc edition bumps the price another $5. A trailer with a peek at some of those extras and the full list of details awaits after the break, but an explanation for why anyone would ever try to touch some weird space snake is something you'll have to find on your own.

Advanced colorectal cancer drug approved by FDA | Health, Medical ...
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Stivarga (regorafenib) to treat patients with colorectal cancer that has progressed after treatment and spread to other parts of the body (metastatic).
Stivarga is a multi-kinase inhibitor that blocks several enzymes that promote cancer growth. The drug was reviewed under the FDA?s priority review program that provides an expedited six-month review for drugs that offer major advances in treatment or that provide treatment when no adequate therapy exists.
Stivarga is being approved one month ahead of the product?s prescription drug user fee goal date of Oct. 27, 2012, the date the agency was scheduled to complete review of the drug application.
?Stivarga is the latest colorectal cancer treatment to demonstrate an ability to extend patients? lives and is the second drug approved for patients with colorectal cancer in the past two months,? said Richard Pazdur, M.D., director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in FDA?s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and in women and the third leading cause of cancer death in men and in women in the United States. The National Institutes of Health estimates 143,460 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and 51,690 will die from the disease in 2012.
The safety and effectiveness of Stivarga were evaluated in a single clinical study of 760 patients with previously treated metastatic colorectal cancer. Patients were randomly assigned to receive Stivarga or placebo in addition to best supportive care (BSC), which includes treatments to help manage side effects and symptoms of cancer. Patients received treatment until their cancers progressed or side effects became unacceptable.
Study results showed patients treated with Stivarga plus BSC lived a median of 6.4 months compared to a median of five months in patients treated with placebo plus BSC. Results also showed patients treated with Stivarga plus BSC experienced a delay in tumor growth (progression-free survival) for a median of two months compared to a median of 1.7 months in patients receiving placebo plus BSC.
Stivarga is being approved with a Boxed Warning alerting patients and health care professionals that severe and fatal liver toxicity occurred in patients treated with Stivarga during clinical studies. The most common side effects reported in patients treated with Stivarga include weakness or fatigue, loss of appetite, hand-foot syndrome (also called palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia), diarrhea, mouth sores (mucositis), weight loss, infection, high blood pressure, and changes in voice volume or quality (dysphonia).
In August 2012, the FDA approved Zaltrap (ziv-aflibercept) for use in combination with a FOLFIRI (folinic acid, fluorouracil and irinotecan) chemotherapy regimen to treat adults with metastatic colorectal cancer.
Stivarga is marketed by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, based in Wayne, N.J. Zaltrap is marketed by Bridgewater, N.J.-based sanofi-aventis.

An Online Spaced-Education Game to Teach and Assess Medical ...
Purpose: To investigate whether a spaced-education (SE) game can be an effective means of teaching core content to medical students and a reliable and valid method of assessing their knowledge.
Method: This nine-month trial (2008?2009) enrolled students from three U.S. medical schools. The SE game consisted of 100 validated multiple-choice questions?explanations in preclinical/clinical domains. Students were e-mailed two questions daily. Adaptive game mechanics re-sent questions in three or six weeks if answered, respectively, incorrectly or correctly. Questions expired if not answered on time (appointment dynamic). Students retired questions by answering each correctly twice consecutively (progression dynamic). Posting of relative performance fostered competition. Main outcome measures were baseline and completion scores.
Results: Seven-hundred thirty-one students enrolled. Median baseline score was 53% (interquartile range [IQR] 16) and varied significantly by year (P < .001, dmax = 2.08), school (P < .001, dmax = 0.75), and gender (P < .001, d = 0.38). Median completion score was 93% (IQR 12) and varied significantly by year (P = .001, dmax = 1.12), school (P < .001, dmax = 0.34), and age (P = .019, dmax = 0.43). Scores did not differ significantly between years 3 and 4. Seventy percent of enrollees (513/731) requested to participate in future SE games.
Conclusions: An SE game is an effective and well-accepted means of teaching core content and a reliable and valid method to assess student knowledge. SE games may be valuable tools to identify and remediate students who could benefit from additional educational support.

How an ATV Could Help Bring Water Car to Market ...
Gibbs Chairman Neil Jenkins, driving this Gibbs Aquada in New Zealand, says the company could begin producing the Aquada in as little as six months after it gains regulatory approval.
Automotive dreamers have coveted the notion of an amphibious car almost since the first autos started showing up on the world?s dusty streets.
Several have tried, most notably Hanns Trippel, who designed several amphibious vehicle, including the most well-known, the 1960s Amphicar.
Floating New Ideas in the Auto Industry!
But no one has developed what anyone could call a commercially successful production amphibious car.
So how does the planned production of an amphibious ATV bring that car one step closer to reality? Let?s take a look.
The production version of the Gibbs Quadski will finally break cover next month. The production version will be higher with larger fenders than this prototype version.
Gibbs Sports Amphibians announced that it would begin production of its Quadski amphibian next month in Auburn Hills, Mich. The Quadski is capable of 45 mph on land and in water and is able to transition between the two in as little as five seconds. The Quadski uses what Gibbs calls High Speed Amphibian technology, the key to which, is wheels that retract into the wheel wells to allow the vehicle to plane.
But that?s a single-seat, straddle-style ATV. Could Gibbs also design a car that could do what the Quadski does?
In a word, yes. In fact, Gibbs began development of its Aquada, a three-seat sports car that looks a bit like an oversized Mazda Miata, in 1997, before it began work on the Quadski. Gibbs expected the Aquada to go into production at least three years ago, but regulatory hurdles have stopped the company from producing it.
The Quadski could be the key to easing the regulatory problems for the Aquada, Gibbs Chairman Neil Jenkins told FastAmphibians.com.
It?s possible that once the world starts seeing the Quadski in action, enthusiasts may start asking about the car. And seeing the Quadski in action could also encourage U.S. regulators to allow Gibbs to start building and selling the Aquada here.
?(The Quadski) will take away some of the fears the regulatory agencies have,? Jenkins told TheDetroitBureau.com two years ago.
The problem is that current regulations on cars and boats conflict. Jenkins has said that the company would have to invent new technology to simultaneously meet some of the requirements of multiple agencies.
For example, Environmental Protection Agency emission requirements necessitate a catalyst, which needs to operate at hundreds of degrees hotter than the U.S. Coast Guard allows in the engine compartment of a boat. Gibbs has suggested an exhaust that would remove the catalyst from the exhaust while in the water, but EPA has rejected that approach.
Another problem: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regulations require that all cars have airbags. But pounding waves would be enough to set off sensitive airbag sensors. One idea would be a switch that deactivates the airbag when in water, but NHTSA has rejected that approach.
Attorneys working with Gibbs on finding solutions to the regulatory hurdles have suggested that regulators should stop trying to shoehorn the Aquada into existing regulations for cars and boats and instead open a new classification for ?amphibians.?
So, instead of focusing on building a street-legal car, Gibbs has turned its attention to off-road products including the Quadski, the Phibian, a 30-foot amphibian aimed at the first-responder market, and the Humdinga, a 21.5-foot amphibian designed to traverse the most difficult terrain.

When the government finally green lights the Aquada, Jenkins told The Wall Street Journal that it could be ready to start building them in limited numbers in as little as six months.
But in the meantime, Gibbs will begin selling the Quadski and begin to recoup some of the more than$200 million invested in the company by founder Alan Gibbs.

I have upsidown property in LA , the current difference between loan and property value is approx 75K.
I have 6% rate with 235 loan for 30 years. I got a refinance proposal that will cost me 1785 APR cost and $1981 non-apr fees for 20 years at 4.34 rate.
The difference will be 133 dll less of what i paid now. The monthly rent is 1750 and the current loan payment is 2090. If i refinance i will just paid 133 from my pocket every month.
I wish I can sell the property but it is very hard so I am just waiting to see if the market get better so I can sell with not much difference.
I need advice if is worth it to refinance in this terms.

Houston cop kills double amputee in wheelchair
HOUSTON?? A Houston police officer shot and killed a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair Saturday inside a group home after police say the double amputee threatened the officer and aggressively waved a metal object that turned out to be a pen.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said the man cornered the officer in his wheelchair and was making threats while trying to stab the officer with the pen. At the time, the officer did not know what the metal object was that the man was waving, Silva said.
She said the man came "within inches to a foot" of the officer and did not follow instructions to calm down and remain still.
"Fearing for his partner's safety and his own safety, he discharged his weapon," Silva told The Associated Press.
Police did not immediately release the name of the man who was killed. They had been called to the home after a caretaker there called and reported that the man in wheelchair was causing a disturbance.
The owner of the group home, John Garcia, told the Houston Chronicle that the man had a history of mental illness and had been living at the house about 18 months. Garcia said the man had told him that he lost a leg above the knee and all of one arm when he was hit by a train.

"He sometimes would go off a bit, but you just ignore it," Garcia told the newspaper.
Silva identified the officer as Matthew Jacob Marin, a five-year veteran of the department. He was immediately placed on three-day administrative leave, which is standard in all shootings involving officers.
Houston police records indicate that Marin also fatally shot a suspect in 2009. Investigators at the time said Marin came upon a man stabbing his neighbor to death at an apartment complex and opened fired when the suspect refused to drop the knife.
On Saturday, Marin and his partner arrived at the group home around 2:30 a.m. Silva said there were several people at the house at the time. The caretaker who called police waited on the porch while the officers went inside, she said.
"It was close quarters in the area of the house," Silva said. "The officer was forced into an area where he had no way to get out."
