State TV won't show Miss Italia; pageant unhappy

ROME (AP) ? The organizer of Italy's Miss Italia beauty pageant is criticizing the state-run television network's decision not to broadcast this year's contest, a step that comes as audiences for the show have dwindled and amid pressure to improve how women are portrayed in the Italian media.

Miss Italia's finals have been shown on RAI in September for 25 years. But the broadcaster's general director, Luigi Gubitosi, was quoted as saying Tuesday by the Italian news agency ANSA that "the format by now has become outdated."

Scantily-clad women are a mainstay of much of Italian TV, with everything from quiz shows to talk shows featuring leggy showgirls on state channels as well as on private networks. The formula was championed by media mogul Silvio Berlusconi on the nation's three main private networks before he became a political leader.

On Monday, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Laura Boldrini, hailed the decision to abandon the traditional transmission of the contest finals as a "civilized and modern choice."

"I hope that Italian young women will have the chance to be appreciated, even on television, in a different way than by parading with numbers on them," she told a conference on violence against women.

But Patrizia Mirigliani, the organizer of the contest, blasted RAI's decision, saying the broadcaster, which is funded partially by taxpayers, should instead try to modernize the show's format. She insisted that the pageant doesn't degrade women.

"In the past years, I've worked hard to change the competition, keeping it up-to-date," she told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "Miss Italia is about a woman who is beautiful, but also complete and eager for challenges. But this idea hasn't come through" on TV, she contended.

For example, Mirigliani said, TV emcees have clung to the format of asking the contestants what she called "silly questions."

Francesca Giammaria, a Roman, applauded the decision by RAI as a first step toward changing how young women like her are viewed.

"It's true that there are more serious problems" surrounding the image of women in Italy, "but let's start from the small things," she said as she enjoyed a quick meal with friends near the Pantheon.

But others might miss the annual TV show. Silvana Contristano, a middle-aged Roman, said she "always watched Miss Italia. It didn't do any harm. It was a tradition."

Her husband, Ugo Nocentini, disagreed. "I totally understand the doubts about the program's value for public service. It's farcical," he said.

Boldrini suggested there was a clear connection between sexism on television and physical abuse against women. "If women are made into objects, the distance from there to violence is small," she said.

But Mirigliani called Miss Italia a "show for families" and noted that such pageants are shown on television around the world.

The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano jumped into the fray, with a commentary Tuesday praising RAI's decision to pull the plug on the program. It called the pageant a "miserable bandwagon" that has become "unsuitable for public service."

Number Of Chinese Internet Users Hit Almost 600 Million

The China Internet Network Information Center released information on the end of June internet usage in the country and the number of people in China who are using the internet has grown to 591 million. That's a 10% rise over last year and about 44% of the population.

The increase was driven by a 20% rise in the number of people who are surfing the web using smartphones and other wireless devices. The number of users using wireless devices has jumped to 464 million.

While the Chinese government encourages the use of the internet, it still tries to block content that it considers subversive or obscene, as was event last year when the authorities clamped down on social network sites, and other website, that were playing a role in protests in other world governments. They also tightened controls on the content of video and require providers to pre-screen material before putting it up live.

There was no break down on what the usage patterns of the 591 million people were, but it would be interesting to know how many are playing online games, shopping, chatting, are gold farmers or just spammers. We're not singling out China concerning the spammers, as many countries have their own fair share of miscreants, but with those types of usage numbers the breakdown would be interesting.

AEG attacks projection of $1B earnings for Jackson

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An expert who projected Michael Jackson could have earned more than $1 billion on his comeback concerts testified Tuesday that his analysis didn't include a breakdown of the singer's yearly earnings over his lifetime and projected a longer concert tour than the superstar had ever performed.

Arthur Erk, a certified public accountant who is an expert in musicians' royalties, said his analysis didn't take into consideration figures detailing Jackson's spending over the years.

His projection that Jackson would have earned between $1.1 billion and $1.5 billion if he performed a 37-month, 260-show tour and crafted a Las Vegas show came under attack Tuesday by a lawyer for concert promoter AEG Live LLC. He said his figures were a conservative estimate of Jackson's earning potential if he had lived.

AEG Live attorney Sabrina Strong attacked Erk's projections, saying they were inconsistent with Jackson's historical spending, earnings or figures of how many sold-out shows Jackson would have performed.

"It wasn't a matter of history," Erk said. "This was going to be a final extravaganza. He was going to do a blowout tour, he would have earned a lot of money."

Erk is testifying for Jackson's mother in her lawsuit against AEG Live, claiming the company is liable for her son's death because it failed to properly investigate the doctor who administered a fatal overdose of an anesthetic propofol in June 2009. At the time of his death, Jackson was preparing for 50 comeback concerts in London called "This Is It," but there was the possibility the singer would have embarked on a worldwide tour.

The accountant based his calculations on documents prepared by AEG, but on cross-examination conceded that the company never projected the singer would earn more than $1 billion after the "This Is It" shows opened. He said he didn't have information regarding Jackson's earnings over his lifetime.

Erk's estimate contemplated Jackson receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in merchandise, endorsement deals and royalties from a Las Vegas show based on his music and archival footage.

Strong showed Erk a chart that showed that Jackson's three previous solo tours comprised 275 shows over a 10-year span. She challenged Erk's contention that he was being conservative by projecting Jackson would have performed 260 shows over a three-year period.

Strong also attacked Erk's calculation that Jackson would have spent $134 million between ages 50 and 65. She cited testimony from Jackson's former business managers and accountants in depositions that Jackson was historically outspending his earnings by millions of dollars each year.

Jackson died an estimated $400 million in debt.

Strong also questioned Erk whether he should have taken into account Jackson's reputation after his acquittal on child molestation charges and when he dangled his infant son Blanket off a hotel balcony in 2002. Erk said those didn't matter in his projections.

Plaintiff's attorney Brian Panish said Erk's projections were based on AEG's plans to do a worldwide tour, and the company had no qualms about spending millions of dollars to prepare for the "This Is It" shows.

He said he planned to show that some of AEG's points brought out on cross-examination were not right.

"We're not done yet," Panish said.

Aquaman is the 'most toxic' superhero online

Internet

In this comic book image released by DC Comics, Aquaman is shown. Wonder Woman, Firestorm, Captain Atom and Aquaman are among the DC Comics characters...

AP

Aquaman, the superhero most of us either mock or just plain forget about, is actually pretty darn important ... to Internet supervillains. Search results for Aquaman-related topics lead to a great number of risky websites.

"[S]earching for the latest 'Aquaman and free torrent download,' 'Aquaman and watch,' 'Aquaman and online,' and 'Aquaman and free trailer' yields a 18.6 percent chance of landing on a website that has tested positive for online threats, such as spyware, adware, spam, phishing, viruses and other malware," Robert Siciliano, an online security evangelist, writes on the official blog of security software maker McAfee.

This overall risk percentage was calculated using McAfee SiteAdvisor site rankings. Aquaman is closely followed by Mr. Fantastic (18.22 percent chance of online threats), the Hulk (17.30 percent chance of online threats), and Wonder Woman (16.77 percent chance of line threats).

Here's how the full list breaks down:

  1. Aquaman???????????????? 18.60%
  2. Mr. Fantastic ???????? 18.22%
  3. The Hulk????????????????? 17.30%
  4. Wonder Woman ??? 16.77%
  5. Daredevil ??????????????? 16.70%
  6. Iron Man ???????????????? 15.63%
  7. Superman 15.21%
  8. Thor ???????????????????????? 15.10%
  9. Green Lantern ??????? 15.00%
  10. Cyclops???????????????????? 14.40%
  11. Wolverine???????????????? 14.27%

  13. Batman???????????????????? 12.30%
  14. Captain America 11.77%

Siciliano offers some basic tips to help keep you safe as you search for your favorite superheroes online. He suggests that you should stay suspicious, be wary of offers that seem to good to be true, double-check URLs, and to use security software. (Well, the fella writes for McAfee's blog. He couldn't possibly miss an opportunity to suggest security software.) It all really boils down to: Use common sense. Searching for sexy images of Catwoman could very well leave you exposed.

The Myth of Marco Rubio?s Immigration Problem

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is losing altitude with some conservatives because he?s the Republican face of immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Yet he?ll have a lot of company in the 2016 field if he runs for the GOP presidential nomination.

In fact almost every Republican weighing a 2016 race ? from Jeb Bush and Chris Christie to Paul Ryan and Bobby Jindal ? favors some path to citizenship like the one in the comprehensive reform bill passed by the Senate, or is open to a variation of it.

?Any Republican with a national perspective understands the dynamics of the politics of the 21st century,? says GOP pollster Whit Ayres, a Rubio adviser. That is, the Hispanic share of the electorate is rising fast, and the GOP share of Hispanic votes keeps falling.

You wouldn?t think it given the resistance of the Republican-run House, but many polls show that most Republicans favor comprehensive reform that includes a path to citizenship, as long as it includes fines, waiting periods, and other conditions that amount to what Ayres calls ?penance? for being in the United States illegally.

Most polls over the past few years find one-quarter to one-third of Republicans will never support citizenship for illegal immigrants regardless of the state of security on the border or the conditions attached, Ayres says. By contrast, just in the last few days, a poll of 1,000 Republican primary voters for a pro-reform GOP group called Americans for a Conservative Direction found 65 percent favor a path to citizenship in combination with "substantially increased border security." A June 13-July 5 Gallup poll of 4,373 people showed that 83 percent of non-Hispanic white conservatives favor "allowing illegal immigrants to have the opportunity to become citizens."

While one poll ? a June 28-July 8 Quinnipiac poll of 2,014 people released Friday ? found somewhat less GOP support, it still showed 54 percent of Republicans backed either allowing eventual citizenship or allowing people to stay in the United States legally.

The evolution of public opinion and a dire political need for the GOP to start digging out of the hole it?s in with Hispanic and Asian voters are two of the reasons many Republicans with national ambitions are not shying away from citizenship and legalization issues.

Rubio brokered the Senate bill as part of the Gang of Eight, and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee who?is trying to work out a compromise in the House, said he expects the lower chamber to pass a bill with a citizenship path. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has expressed support for a path to citizenship as has Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, though Jindal opposed the Senate bill for other reasons. Christie, New Jersey? popular governor, supported a citizenship path in 2010, before it was popular in his party. Sen. Jeff Chiesa, the close associate Christie named to fill the seat when Democrat Frank Lautenberg died, voted for the Senate bill.

Florida?s former governor, Jeb Bush, has said he is open to a path to citizenship or legal status for undocumented immigrants while Texas Gov. Perry and Kentucky?s Paul also are open to what the senator calls ?normalizing their status,? depending on the state of border security.

Among the most hardline of the 2016 prospects is Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who has introduced amendments blocking a path to citizenship, calling it unfair to those who waited in line to arrive legally. Former Sen. Rick Santorum, a 2012 aspirant who says he is ?very open? to a 2016 race, told radio host Andrea Tantaro last month that there will be ?consequences? in the primaries for Rubio. He says the attitude among some Washington Republicans seems to be that ?the rule of law isn't that important,? that people who came the United States illegally will be treated the same as those who came legally.

While there are indications that Rubio?s role in the immigration debate isn?t helping him among Republicans, it?s way too early for polls to be relevant and in any case the damage for now appears minimal. For instance, a Rasmussen Reports automated poll in June found that Rubio?s favorability rating among Republicans nationally had dropped 15 points since February ? but it is still at 58 percent.

Opposition to immigration reform, particularly from the tea party wing of the GOP, is intense and vociferous but also misleading, given that two-thirds of Republicans support a path to citizenship if there are strict conditions that go along with it. House members, says Ayres, are ?reacting to what they hear from people who take the time to write, call and email their offices. There aren?t any Republicans that are going to write their congressman demanding a path to citizenship. It?s not the kind of thing that makes you charge the ramparts.?

Sal Russo, a Sacramento-based former Ronald Reagan aide who is co-founder and chief strategist of the Tea Party Express, says those who oppose a path to citizenship are fired up now and determined that undocumented immigrants should not be rewarded for violating the law. ?It?s an important principle, but of course, politics is about the realities of things,? Russo says. ?It?s a difficult thing for some people to swallow, but at the end of the day people think we have to fix the immigration system.?

Russo himself takes the long view, having been around in 1978, when Reagan opposed a ban on gay teachers in California, and 1994, when Jack Kemp opposed Proposition 187 denying social services to illegal immigrants. People predicted conservatives would never support either of them again ? ?so silly,? he says. He predicts the citizenship controversy ?won?t be a material factor? in 2016, especially if Congress takes immigration off the table by passing something, however imperfect.

Certainly hardline candidates will hold appeal to some GOP primary voters. But after two terms of President Obama, many Republicans will be looking for a general-election winner. Support of comprehensive immigration reform, including a path to citizenship, could well evolve into a proxy for inclusiveness, compassion, and the broad appeal that could finally put the party back in the White House.

Wash. university offers online cybersecurity minor

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (AP) -- Central Washington University is offering a new program aimed at meeting the demand for people who can prevent cyberattacks.

The university's new 24-credit minor in cybersecurity will allow students to identify vulnerabilities in information systems, to defend those systems against hackers and other security threats, and to track cybercriminals.

Professor Gary Rogers says it's the first such program offered entirely online in Washington state. He says the program is complementary to other programs at Central, such as law and justice, accounting and computer science.

The university announced the program in a statement Monday, noting that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported job opportunities for network systems and information security professionals are expected to grow by 43 percent through 2018.

Cammy's Favorite Covers - Batgirl To Godzilla - Bleeding Cool ...

Cameron Hatheway writes for Bleeding Cool:

batgirl22Batgirl #22 by Alex Garner

B-but, Batgirl doesn?t kill! Right? Everything I thought I knew is a lie!!! All red herrings aside, I enjoyed this cover immensely thanks to Garner?s radical-looking painted style. The armor and bat gauntlets are incredibly vibrant, and the bloody outline of the body doesn?t bode well for someone in this issue, methinks. My favorite little detail has to be Barbara?s tears; they?re so beautiful, yet so sad. She?s going through some immense pain it seems, and hopefully she won?t let her rage overcome her. Tremendous cover!

eerie3Eerie #3 by Jim Pavelec

That?s a seashell I would NOT stick my ear near to hear the ocean. I would hear an ocean of pain and sorrows instead, followed by this creepy fishlady emerging and chomping on my face. It?s such an eerie cover, isn?t it? I do like the twisted imagery of the shell, with that great shine look included. The painted texture is a superb for a cover like this, for the shades of green in her face look truly remarkable. That one creepy eye of hers is off-putting too, but in a good way. The cover as a whole definitely grabs your attention.

demonknights22Demon Knights #22 by Howard Porter

Very colorful! I think that?s the main reason this cover caught my eye, for it was an amalgamation of colors with a tinge of the psychedelic flavoring, and it never hurts having the jagged vines from the Evil Dead franchise make a cameo. The intricate details of the armor and goblet are equally delicious to look at, and I especially love then gruesome vines emerging from the skull in the lower left-hand corner. Pain, struggle, and a whole heap of adventure is what makes this cover magic.

godzilla13Godzilla #13 by Bob Eggleton & Matt Frank

This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. Okay, I may be a bit biased in choosing this cover because I just saw and loved Pacific Rim yesterday. I was fortunate enough to see it in IMAX 3D, and let me tell you, if you have the opportunity to see it in such a setting do it! This cover represents everything awesome about the O.G. kaiju, and how several decades later he?s still a force to be reckoned with. The mushroom cloud in the background is a nice apocalyptic touch.

Microsoft Denies Providing NSA 'Direct, Blanket' Access

Microsoft this week denied that it provides the government with "blanket or direct access" to products like SkyDrive, Outlook.com, Skype, or any of its other products.

"We have clear principles which guide the response across our entire company to government demands for customer information for both law enforcement and national security issues," Microsoft said in a statement.

Redmond's declaration came after The Guardian on Thursday published an article with what it said were details about how Microsoft participated in the National Security Agency's PRISM program.

"Microsoft helped the NSA to circumvent its encryption to address concerns that the agency would be unable to intercept web chats on the new Outlook.com portal," The Guardian said, citing NSA documents provided to the paper by former contractor Edward Snowden.

In response, Microsoft said it only provides the government with access to customer data "in response to legal processes."

"We only ever comply with orders about specific accounts or identifiers, and we would not respond to the kind of blanket orders discussed in the press over the past few weeks," Redmond said.

According to The Guardian, the NSA was concerned about the encryption technology used on Outlook.com, which debuted in July 2012. "Within five months, the documents explain, Microsoft and the FBI had come up with a solution that allowed the NSA to circumvent encryption on Outlook.com chats," the paper said.

"When we upgrade or update products legal obligations may in some circumstances require that we maintain the ability to provide information in response to a law enforcement or national security request," Microsoft said.

The company concluded by saying that it would like to provide more information about its collaboration with the government, but is constrained by a gag order that prevents any firm from discussing the secretive FISA court that handles these types of proceedings.

"That's why we've argued for additional transparency that would help everyone understand and debate these important issues," Microsoft said, referencing a recent filing with the FISA court that asked for permission to publish general numbers about the number of FISA requests it receives. Google and Yahoo have made similar requests.

Among the fallout from the Snowden leaks was this week's decision by the organizers of the Defcon hacker conference to rescind their invitation to federal officials.

Jeter returns, exits with tight quad, Yankees win

NEW YORK (AP) ? Derek Jeter walked to home plate, toyed with his batting gloves, stepped into the batter's box as fans chanted his name and legged out an infield hit.

A feeling of normalcy returned to the Yankee Stadium. The captain was back after a nine-month layoff.

But, perhaps, only for a few innings.

Jeter singled on his first pitch of the season, then felt a tight right quadriceps and was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of New York's 8-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

He scored a run and went 1 for 4 with an RBI groundout as the designated hitter in his return from a broken ankle sustained in last October's AL championship series opener. After icing the leg, the 39-year-old was headed to a hospital for a scan.

In a season thus far memorable for sidelined stars rather than sustained success, the Yankees anxiously awaited the test results.

"It's not frustrating, yet. We'll see. They MRI everything around here," Jeter said. "I hope it's not a big deal."

Known for trying to ignore most injuries, Jeter vowed not to this time. Sort of.

"I can't trick the tests," he said, before adding: "I always play."

He played through September and into October last year with what was called a bone bruise. The left ankle finally gave out in the AL championship series opener against Detroit.

"I don't think it broke because I was 38. I think it broke because I continued to play on something that maybe I shouldn't have," Jeter said.

The possible setback is not what the Yankees were hoping for in a season also hampered by significant injuries to first baseman Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Francisco Cervelli.

"It's kind of what we went through this year," manager Joe Girardi said. "So hopefully it's nothing, it's just some leg tightness and he'll be ready to go."

Andy Pettitte (7-6) settled down after another shaky first inning to win consecutive starts for the first time since April. Lyle Overbay hit a go-ahead, two-run single in a four-run fifth against Ervin Santana (5-6) as New York overcame a 3-0 deficit and split the four-game series.

New York cut short the star shortstop's rehabilitation assignment in the minor leagues after just four games following injuries Wednesday night to Travis Hafner and Brett Gardner, who hit for Jeter in the eighth. Jeter found out about 11 p.m. in Scranton, Pa., went back to his hotel, waited for his equipment and caught a ride to New York. He arrived about 2:30 a.m., fell asleep 90 minutes later.

And then woke up about 6:30 a.m. ? only partly because of the early schedule he had been on during his rehabilitation routine.

"Couldn't fall back asleep," he said. "I was nervous going into the game. It's almost like it's opening day for me, even though we're in ? what are we in, July now? I lost track of the months."

Jeter batted second in his first big league game since Oct. 13. He said after the initial injury he would return by opening day, then fractured the ankle again in April during his rehab and missed the first 91 games of the season.

Jeter turned on a 95 mph fastball in the first ? "I had my mind made up yesterday that I was going to swing at the first pitch" ? and sent a three-hopper up the third-base line that fell from Miguel Tejada's throwing hand. The crowd of 40,381 screamed "De-rek Je-ter! De-rek Je-ter!"

Jeter's ankle got more tests when he raced to third on Robinson Cano's single up the middle and came home without a throw on Vernon Wells' sacrifice fly to right.

The Yankees' all-time hits leader grounded out in the second and again in the fifth, when second baseman Johnny Giavotella made a diving stop to prevent an RBI single. That's when the quad tightened.

Jeter hit a sharp grounder to shortstop with the infield in during the sixth. Alcides Escobar bobbled the ball as Luis Cruz scored from third, and Jeter was thrown out as he jogged up the first-base line.

"He looked the same," Santana said. "Very aggressive."

Jeter had not been introduced at Yankee Stadium by Bob Sheppard's recording in 271 days, since he sprawled onto his stomach while trying to field Jhonny Peralta's 12th-inning grounder up the middle, immobile on the infield dirt and yelled out in pain.

"It's awesome to have him back out there. He's so positive," Pettitte said. "We need his leadership ability."

Jeter went 1 for 9 in his tuneup at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. After initially saying Jeter could play shortstop in Friday's series opener against Minnesota, Girardi said he likely would DH again if healthy.

"I think it's easy to say that you would expect with his age and a double break that I think he'd lose a step or two or half a step, but I think he's moving extremely well from what I'm told," general manager Brian Cashman said.

Girardi's task will be preventing Jeter from playing too much.

"I think Derek would run himself out there the next 70 games if it was up to him," Girardi said. "W=e have to pick days off, and we have to pick DH days."

Kansas City took a 3-0 lead in the first when Salvador Perez hit a two-run double and Lorenzo Cain had a sacrifice fly. The Royals' only other run was unearned, set up by Pettitte's throwing error on a second-inning bunt.

New York closed to 4-3 in the second when Austin Romine hit an RBI double and scored on Eduardo Nunez's single. After Overbay's two-out, go-ahead hit, Zoilo Almonte and Nunez followed with run-scoring singles for a 7-4 lead.

With Jeter in the lineup, his teammates seemed to relax.

"The fans were great, gave me a nice ovation," Jeter said. "It's been a long time."

NOTES: The Yankees cleared a roster spot by designating 1B Travis Ishikawa for assignment.

US-China military ties making "progress"

WASHINGTON: Military ties between the United States and China are showing "significant progress" with both sides engaged in a useful dialogue as well as joint exercises, a top US admiral said Thursday.

Three years since military relations hit a low point with Beijing suspending contacts, senior officers are holding regular talks and gaining a better understanding of each country's concerns, Admiral Samuel Locklear, head of the US Pacific Command, told a news conference.

"And I think that the progress that we're making between our two militaries is quite commendable," Locklear said.

The four-star admiral spoke after having taken part in this week's talks in Washington between the United States and China, an annual meeting that covers security as well as economic issues.

US frustration with Chinese cyber hacking against American companies featured high on the agenda in the discussions but Locklear made no mention of digital spying in his remarks.

The defence dialogue in recent months has underscored common ground while clarifying areas of disagreement, he said, allowing commanders to "manage it (friction) so that diplomacy can continue to work."

"So I think that alone is significant progress," he added.

He also pointed to a recent humanitarian disaster relief exercise in Brunei in which Chinese and US forces "just finished operating side by side" as further evidence of improving relations, as well as a port visit by the USS Shiloh in China.

For the first time, the Chinese navy will be taking part in RIMPAC, a major three-week naval exercise in 2014 led by the US Third Fleet.

He said China's decision to participate is "a big step for the Chinese military."

Locklear acknowledged that China had a different interpretation of maritime law than the United States, with Beijing insisting on sovereign authority over "economic" zones and Washington insisting on freedom of navigation outside of defined territorial waters.

But he expressed optimism that top officers could continue to work out "rules of the road" to avoid incidents or tensions on the high seas, as China extends the global reach of its navy.

"So we have to manage our ability to operate around each other. And I think that's ...a doable thing," he said.

He also said the Pentagon's investments in weapons designed to bolster US air and sea power are not aimed in any way at containing China.

"We're too interconnected in too many ways for us to have a containment policy, a military containment strategy," he said.

The US policy was "one of cooperation and collaboration" with China, he said.

But he added the United States will ensure its interests around the world "are well defended."

China broke off military relations in 2010 after the United States announced a major arms deal with Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory.

Yes, yes, we are 100% aware that the 4th of July was a week ago at this point, but we?re still putting up announcements of donations that were sent in for our PIXEL FIREWORKS video game package drive for the 4th of July!

Our friends over at Performance Designed Products (PDP) have been quite helpful over the years; we get boxes full of games, but our big problem is providing actual console hardware to our video game packages. ?It is one of the largest expenses we have here at the charity outside of shipping and handling (which, as you can imagine, is quite the beast). ?So when we met up with PDP at this year?s E3 to let them know we were starting to run short of their absurdly large box of PDP Rock Candy Xbox 360 controllers, they topped us off with the latest and greatest in their arsenal, the Afterglow!

13 x PDP Xbox 360 Afterglow controllers
15 x PDP PS3 Afterglow controllers

So big thanks to our friends at PDP; this donation should hold us out until we?re talking about buying Xbox Ones and Playstation 4s!

If you?d like to help us build out a package for our current video game package request, MAIDEN VOYAGE, for troopers in Afghanistan, it?s fairly easy:

Where's the chemistry lobby? On why we need a National Center for Chemical Education

Part of the mission of the NCCE would be to point out chemistry's astonishingly diverse connections to almost every other field and aspect of our lives (Image: Chadron State College)

Veteran chemistry blogger Derek Lowe?s takedown of the nonsensical Buzzfeed article about eight ?food chemicals? that you should stay away from was an excellent rejoinder to what was essentially a pile of sensationalized opinions disseminated by someone who does not bother reading up on basic science, but it also gave me a sinking feeling that is encapsulated by the following basic existential question.

How long can we chemists do this?

Over the last few years bloggers like SeeArrOh, Derek, Chembark and others have regularly pointed out instances of the growing epidemic of antiscientific, fact-free chemophobia that abounds on the Internet. In fact most of it is not even chemophobia, it?s just plain ignorance of basic science. But as far as the sheer amount of chemistry-related nonsense floating around goes, all this worthy debunking is no more than a drop in the ocean. Those who don?t understand science and chemistry are going to keep foisting the same falsehoods on us ad nauseum. The problem is that even if chemistry bloggers decided to debunk no more than 10% of the nonsense that goes around, they will be at it all day and night. The pile of anti-chemistry garbage that dots the landscape of the internet and print media is like a Hydra. You debunk one head and ten grow in its place.

Plus the fundamental challenge in countering half-baked science is well-known: it takes only a few minutes to throw around unsubstantiated claims and link to random secondary and tertiary sources, but it takes dedicated time and effort to trawl through the primary sources, analyze the data and come up with a reasoned refutation. For instance it took me almost an hour to go through all the sources alluded to in a post about ?toxic couches? and to write a post countering the claims. In fighting anti-chemistry forces chemists face a challenge similar to that faced by evolutionists fighting creationists. It takes only a minute for a creationist to make a statement like ?There are no transitional fossil forms? but it takes time for an evolutionist to then go into the details and counter with the list of known transitional forms. Whether it?s creationism or chemophobia, time is inherently biased against the responders.?There is essentially no realistic possibility that a group of dedicated chemistry bloggers who are doing this in their free time are ever going to get around to refuting more than a fraction of all this fear-mongering, fact-free antiscientific piffle.

About the only remedy that I can see to counter this chemophobia and spread of ignorance is a dedicated chemistry lobby. The United States, after all, is the land of lobbies. So why not have a chemistry lobby? The task of the chemistry lobby would be simple; to have a dedicated group of chemists and people who actually care about the benefits of chemistry make a concerted effort to combat misinformation and ignorance, using every print, online and social outlet available, directing their efforts so that they reach every imaginable kind of citizen, from the man on the street to Congressmen on the Hill.?The lobby would include contributions from chemistry researchers, teachers, students, policy makers and regulators. They could join hands with the American Chemical Society and any other organization that wants to further the cause of chemistry; in my personal opinion, while the ACS has done some admirable work in improving the public image of chemical science, its efforts have been sorely lacking in proportion to the work that actually needs to be done.

Anyone who actually understands chemistry at a basic level would be welcome to contribute.?The chemistry lobby could have their own TV channel, radio program and newsletter. Perhaps they could start a series that does for chemistry what ?Cosmos? did for astronomy, replete with a charismatic and credible Sagan-like figure (Roald Hoffmann could fit the bill quite well). They could run campaigns to educate people about the facts and benefits of chemistry while admitting upfront to the misuse that chemistry has been put to over the years; they should also underscore the fact that misuse of chemistry has been no different from misuse of any other technology developed by flawed human beings. Their task would not be to whitewash the evils of the chemical, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries but point out the good that the industry has done in people?s lives on a deep level. Chemistry largely underpins modern civilization, and it would be the task of the chemistry lobby to educate people about this fundamental fact.

The chemistry lobby would not solicit financial contributions from industry. Members of the lobby are probably going to be painted as industry shills by their opponents anyway, so it would not help being funded by massive contributions from industry. Instead the organization I am envisioning would be a non-profit group akin to the National Center for Science Education (NCSE), funded mainly by member contributions and grants. The National Center for Chemical Education (NCCE ? as sound a name for the lobby as any other) would do to counter chemophobia what the NCSE has done to combat creationism. The official mission of the NCSE is to keep evolution in the class and creationism out of it. The official mission of the NCCE would be to keep chemistry in the public arena and chemophobia out of it. Just like the NCSE is not the official spokesperson of any university, atheist organization or political or social group, the NCCE would not be the official spokesperson of any body. It might support or reject the views of specific organizations, but official affiliation would be eschewed. At the same time it could fund the activities of specific bloggers, professors or citizens whose efforts to educate the general populace about chemistry are especially noteworthy. The NCCE could also fund studies and surveys designed to simply find out more about what people think about chemistry and its various incarnations in our lives.

The NCSE has done an immense amount of good over the decades to combat the forces of darkness that threaten to invade the school curriculum. At the same time they have taken no official position against religion and have in fact emphasized their respect for people?s personal religious beliefs. The NCCE would similarly debunk basic ignorance of chemistry and fear-mongering without insulting the real concerns that environmentalists, parents and concerned citizens have. It is only by taking a stand against objective falsehoods while still respecting the emotional reactions that the public has about the growth of technology that we can make a dent in fostering dialogue between disparate factions and bridging the gulf of differences. I look forward to the day when a rational, enthusiastic and expansive chemistry lobby starts to achieve this goal.

Apple applies to register iWatch trademark

Apple CEO Tim Cook told a recent gathering of tech and media executives a month ago that wearable products were ripe for exploration.

TOKYO ? Apple has applied for a trademark for "iWatch" in Japan, a patent official said on Monday, signaling the iPhone maker may be moving ahead with plans for a watch-like device as gadget makers turn their attention to wearable computers.

The trademark application, submitted on June 3 and released on the Japan Patent Office website on June 27, would cover computers, computer peripherals and wristwatches, the official said. He said it was unknown how long the application process would require.

An Apple spokesman in Japan could not immediately be reached for comment.

Speculation has mounted that Apple is preparing to launch an iWatch and CEO Tim Cook told a gathering of tech and media executives a month ago that wearable products were ripe for exploration, but added he was skeptical, including about Google's recently unveiled Glass which combines a mobile computer and eyeglasses.

"There's nothing that's going to convince a kid who has never worn glasses or a band or a watch to wear one, or at least I haven't seen it," Cook said.

Wearable devices are considered a potential area for hit products as smartphones such as the iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co's Galaxy series are losing their ability to impress consumers and investors.

Samsung, which has leapfrogged Apple as the world's leading smartphone maker, is also developing a wearable device similar to a wristwatch, a source with knowledge of the matter has said.

The New York Times reported in February that Apple was experimenting with the design of a device similar to a wristwatch that would operate on the same iOS platform as its iPhone and iPad and would be made with curved glass.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Two of San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit's largest unions and management returned to the bargaining table Sunday in an 11th hour attempt to avoid a possible strike as commuters braced for potentially nightmarish journeys into work.

Representatives from Service Employees International Union Local 1021, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555 and BART were scheduled to begin negotiations Sunday afternoon as the unions' contracts are set to expire at midnight.

The meeting comes nearly 24 hours after union negotiators said they would likely strike, which would cripple the region's Monday morning commute. A strike could put another 60,000 vehicles on the road, affecting every mode of transportation, clogging highways and bridges throughout the Bay Area, area transportation officials said.

As the deadline nears, both sides say they are far apart on key sticking points including salary, pensions, health care and safety. Anticipated around-the-clock negotiations had fallen apart Saturday as the unions packed up and left after talks stalled amid claims that the parties met face-to-face once in 36 hours.

Sunday's last-ditch talks also come after Gov. Jerry Brown's secretary of the Labor and Workforce Development Agency, Marty Morgenstern, requested the parties continue negotiating to prevent a work stoppage of the nation's fifth-largest rail system.

"Our team is not encouraged by BART's proposal, but we are going to bargain at the request of the labor secretary in good faith as we have all along," said Josie Mooney, an SEIU chief negotiator. "But if BART continues to do 'surface bargaining,' then we will not come to an agreement."

Brown spokesman Evan Westrup said Sunday that the governor will not call for a "cooling off period at this time" as state mediators will continue assisting the negotiating parties.

"BART and its labor unions owe the public a swift resolution of their differences," Westrup said. "All parties should be at the table doing their best to find common ground."

The two unions, which represent nearly 2,400 train operators, station agents, mechanics, maintenance workers and professional staff, want a 5 percent raise each year over the next three years.

BART said Saturday that train operators and station agents in the unions average about $71,000 in base salary and $11,000 in overtime annually. The workers also pay a flat $92 monthly fee for health insurance.

BART spokesman Rick Rice said BART's latest proposal offered a total of an 8 percent salary raise over the next four years, instead of its original offer of a total of 4 percent over the same period. The proposed salary increase is on top of a 1 percent raise employees were scheduled to receive Monday, Rice added.

The transit agency also said it offered to reduce the contribution employees would have to make to their pensions, and lower the costs of health care premiums they would have to pay.

Rice said Sunday that BART's latest proposal may not be its best last offer.

"We need to have some substantial discussions," Rice said. "I hope we can make some progress."

BART's last strike lasted six days in 1997. The transit agency handles more than 40 percent of commuters coming from the East Bay to San Francisco with the Bay Bridge handling another 50 percent said John Goodwin, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

Goodwin said commuters should consider carpooling, taking extra buses or ferries available and working from home if the trains stop. And, if commuters must drive to work, leave earlier or even later than usual, he said.

"We simply don't know what the status is," Goodwin said. "Unfortunately, we have to go with the assumption that BART will not be in operation."

Meanwhile, commuters such as Richard Graham, 43, of Pleasant Hill who works as a hotel banquet manager in downtown San Francisco, is left pondering his options, including a three-hour drive to work.

"I can't stop thinking about it," Graham said Sunday as he got off a train. "It would make take me 2 ? to 3 hours if I drive in to work. Then I've got to find parking, and that might cost me another 40 bucks, if there are any spots left."
