Yahoo! v1.0 update improves interface, adds news summaries

Yahoo! App

A newly refined design highlights the company's best products

In an attempt to make some leaps forward in terms of design and user experience, Yahoo! has revamped its Android app today with a new interface and set of features. Version 1.0 of the app changes the look of things, with an endlessly scrolling set of news stories as the main page, which nicely displays the article title and a summary with an opaque background over a headline image. Those summaries condense the article's main premise into a short paragraph, which is very similar to the technology that Yahoo! acquired just recently when buying a company called "Summly".

Other highlights of the app include a revamped search interface that includes images and video in-line, which can be found behind a nice slide-in panel on the left side of the app. Here you can also find settings for customizing your news topics and sources, as well as quick tabs to launch other popular Yahoo! apps on your device such as Mail, Finance and Messenger. The entire design is a big step forward for Yahoo!, and certainly makes a better case for staying installed on your device.

Global shares rise, dollar falls on central bank expectations

LONDON (Reuters) - World shares gained and the dollar fell on Monday as investors counted on easy money from the U.S. and euro zone central banks to offset the risk of further disappointing global economic data. However, the euro gained ground as some investors had second thoughts about whether the European Central Bank will cut interest rates on Thursday, a prospect that pushed the common currency down around 1.3 percent against the dollar last week.

Analysis: Tax strategy may be key to Verizon Wireless deal

(Reuters) - Verizon Communications Inc's chances of buying the 45-percent stake in Verizon Wireless owned by the UK's Vodafone Group Plc will hinge, at least in part, on the quality of tax advice it is getting. Verizon , the No. 2 U.S. telecommunications company, may have found a way to structure a purchase of the stake so that Vodafone can avoid a multi-billion dollar U.S. capital gains tax bill, sources familiar with Verizon's plans said. The possibility of a huge tax bill has previously been regarded by analysts as a big hurdle to any such deal.

VW brand bears brunt of crisis as first-quarter profit halves

BERLIN (Reuters) - First-quarter profit at Volkswagen's core brand almost halved, Europe's biggest carmaker said on Monday, as manufacturers battle the region's protracted slump in demand with ever deeper discounts. Operating profit at the VW brand, which accounts for over half the German group's 46.6 billion-euro ($60.7 billion) sales, plunged to 590 million euros, VW said, giving details on a drop in quarterly group earnings announced last week.

Economic mood in euro zone sours again in April

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Confidence in the euro zone's economy fell further in April, data showed, strengthening the case for a cut in interest rates this week by the European Central Bank. The euro zone is facing a difficult road out of recession and has seen a souring of the mood among companies and consumers since March, after an optimistic start to the year was disrupted by turmoil in Cyprus and Italy.

'Super-resolution' microscope possible for nanostructures

Apr. 29, 2013 ? Researchers have found a way to see synthetic nanostructures and molecules using a new type of super-resolution optical microscopy that does not require fluorescent dyes, representing a practical tool for biomedical and nanotechnology research.

"Super-resolution optical microscopy has opened a new window into the nanoscopic world," said Ji-Xin Cheng, an associate professor of biomedical engineering and chemistry at Purdue University.

Conventional optical microscopes can resolve objects no smaller than about 300 nanometers, or billionths of a meter, a restriction known as the "diffraction limit," which is defined as half the width of the wavelength of light being used to view the specimen. However, researchers want to view molecules such as proteins and lipids, as well as synthetic nanostructures like nanotubes, which are a few nanometers in diameter.

Such a capability could bring advances in a diverse range of disciplines, from medicine to nanoelectronics, Cheng said.

"The diffraction limit represents the fundamental limit of optical imaging resolution," Cheng said. "Stefan Hell at the Max Planck Institute and others have developed super-resolution imaging methods that require fluorescent labels. Here, we demonstrate a new scheme for breaking the diffraction limit in optical imaging of non-fluorescent species. Because it is label-free, the signal is directly from the object so that we can learn more about the nanostructure."

Findings are detailed in a research paper that appeared online Sunday (April 28) in the journal Nature Photonics.

The imaging system, called saturated transient absorption microscopy,or STAM,uses a trio of laser beams, including a doughnut-shaped laser beam that selectively illuminates some molecules but not others. Electrons in the atoms of illuminated molecules are kicked temporarily into a higher energy level and are said to be excited, while the others remain in their "ground state." Images are generated using a laser called a probe to compare the contrast between the excited and ground-state molecules.

The researchers demonstrated the technique, taking images of graphite "nanoplatelets" about 100 nanometers wide.

"It's a proof of concept and has great potential for the study of nanomaterials, both natural and synthetic," Cheng said.

The doughnut-shaped laser excitation technique, invented by researcher Stefan Hell, makes it possible to focus on yet smaller objects. Researchers hope to improve the imaging system to see objects about 10 nanometers in diameter, or about 30 times smaller than possible using conventional optical microscopes.

"We are not there yet, but a few schemes can be applied to further increase the resolution of our system," Cheng said.

The paper was co-authored by biomedical engineering doctoral student Pu Wang; research scientist Mikhail N. Slipchenko; mechanical engineering doctoral student James Mitchell; Chen Yang, an assistant professor of physical chemistry at Purdue; Eric O. Potma, an associate professor of chemistry at the University of California, Irvine; Xianfan Xu, Purdue's James J. and Carol L. Shuttleworth Professor of Mechanical Engineering; and Cheng.

Future research may include work to use lasers with shorter wavelengths of light. Because the wavelengths are shorter, the doughnut hole is smaller, possibly allowing researchers to focus on smaller objects.

The work will be discussed during the third annual Spectroscopic Imaging: A New Window into the Unseen World workshop on May 23 and 24 at Purdue. The workshop is hosted by the university's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.

The research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Daily Chronicle | 1st trial in Ill. family's brutal slaying to start

CHAMPAIGN ? The killing of a Beason couple and three of their children led many in their tiny central Illinois farming community to begin locking their doors at night, and nearly four years later, their home stands as a constant reminder of their brutal deaths.

On Monday, the first of two brothers charged in their killings is scheduled to stand trial in Peoria. Christopher Harris has pleaded not guilty to more than 50 counts of murder in the September 2009 killings of Raymond ?Rick? Gee, 46, his wife Ruth Gee, 39, and three of the children ? Justina Constant, 16; Dillen Constant, 14; and Austin Gee, 11. They all were beaten to death with a tire iron in their home, and only the couple?s 3-year-old daughter, Tabitha, survived.

Jury selection could begin Tuesday and may take several days. The rest of the trial could take about a week. Harris? brother, Jason Harris, is also charged with more than 50 counts of murder in the case, and his trial hasn?t been scheduled yet.

The attack on the family sent a wave of fear through Beason, a community of about 200 residents. Until police arrested the Harris brothers, who are from Armington, Beason was on edge.

?Not many people lock their doors here,? Brittney Fillmore, who went to school with Justina and Dillen, said at the time. ?Something like this isn?t what you?d expect, especially happening in a small town where everybody knows each other.?

Neither Christopher Harris? lawyers nor prosecutors from the state Attorney General?s office or Logan County were willing to talk about the case, citing a gag order.

The brothers? indictments accuse them of breaking into the home intending to sexually assault Justina Constant and rob the family. A laptop computer was stolen. Prosecutors have said they believe Christopher Harris, who is now 33, is primarily responsible. Jason Harris, now 25, is expected to testify that while he waited outside, he saw his brother follow Dillen Constant out of the home with a tire iron.

In court, Christopher Harris? attorneys have admitted that he killed Dillen Constant. But they say he acted to save his own life, arguing in pretrial hearings that the Harris brothers went to the Gee home to buy marijuana, and that Christopher Harris walked in on the teenager slaughtering his own family.

?[Constant] killed his family,? attorney Dan Fultz said in a hearing last September, according to The [Bloomington] Pantagraph. He argued that the boy was heavily influenced by violent video games: ?He had violent tendencies toward everybody.?

Defense lawyers plan to use testimony from an expert on violent video games and records of the boy?s troubles ? including fights at school and threats made against other students ? to make their case.

Prosecutors have said the defense?s theory is based on guess work.

?The defense has made no showing that this information is contained in the records,? Assistant Attorney General Steve Nate said during a hearing last year as defense lawyers tried to gain access to the boy?s records. ?They?re guessing. They?re hoping to find something.?

The trial was moved to Peoria after Harris? attorneys argued their client might not get a fair trial in Lincoln, the Logan County seat. The killings have remained a regular part of news coverage in the area, and the county has just 30,000 residents.

In Beason, the Gee house is now boarded up. It?s sat as a crime scene since the bodies were discovered.

Defense attorneys had hoped to take jurors to the home to show them its relatively small size and to give them an idea of what a violent struggle in such a small space might be like.

Peter Naylor, one of Christopher Harris? lawyers, argued during one hearing that his client couldn?t have been involved in the violent struggle believed to have resulted in the family?s deaths ?and walked away without injuries.?

Harris lawyers have said he showed no sign of injuries in the days after the killings.

Scott Drazewski, the McLean County Judge who will hear the case, said that ideally jurors could visit the home, but in this case agreed with prosecutors that blood and other remnants of the struggle that have never been cleaned up make the home a health hazard.

Jurors instead will have to rely on thousands of photos and several videos of the home?s interior.

DNA evidence taken from Raymond Gee?s fingernails also may be considered. Defense lawyers say testing has ruled out Christopher Harris and everyone else in the home, except Dillen Constant, as a potential source of that DNA.

After the Gees were killed, many local residents sought comfort by gathering at Beason United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Darrel Howard only came to the church in 2010, but he knows the story of the killings well. The church?s 60 members have tried to move on but, ?there?s always going to be that sorrow.?

The house, he said, ?is always a reminder, every time you pass the place. It is exactly the way it was.?

Howard said the Beason killings, like the deaths of five people slain in the small western Illinois town of Manchester just this month ? or even the bombings at the Boston Marathon ? are evidence of evil that can be fought with acts of good.

?It hits home,? he said. ?These things don?t just happen to somebody else ? we?re all connected in that way.?

There are 39 hours, 31 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama joked Saturday that the years are catching up to him and he's not "the strapping young Muslim socialist" he used to be.

Obama poked fun at himself as well as some of his political adversaries during the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner attended by politicians, members of the media and Hollywood celebrities.

Entering to the rap track "All I Do Is Win" by DJ Khaled, Obama joked about how re-election would allow him to unleash a radical agenda. But then he showed a picture of himself golfing on a mock magazine cover of "Senior Leisure."

"I'm not the strapping young Muslim Socialist that I used to be," the president remarked, and then recounted his recent 2-for-22 basketball shooting performance at the White House Easter Egg hunt.

But Obama's most dramatic shift for the next four years appeared to be aesthetic. He presented a montage of shots featuring him with bangs similar to those sometimes sported by his wife.

"So we borrowed one of Michelle's tricks," Obama said. "I thought this looked pretty good, but no bounce."

Obama closed by noting the nation's recent tragedies in Massachusetts and Texas, praising Americans of all stripes from first responders to local journalists for serving the public good.

Saturday night's banquet not far from the White House attracted the usual assortment of stars from Hollywood and beyond. Actors Kevin Spacey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Claire Danes, who play government characters on series, were among the attendees, as was Korean entertainer Psy. Several Cabinet members, governors and members of Congress were present.

And despite coming at a somber time, nearly two weeks after the deadly Boston Marathon bombing and 10 days after a devastating fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, the president and political allies and rivals alike took the opportunity to enjoy some humor. Late-night talk-show host Conan O'Brien headlined the event.

Some of Obama's jokes came at his Republican rivals' expense. He asked that the GOP's minority outreach begin with him as a "trial run" and said he'd take his recent charm offensive with Republicans on the road, including events with conservatives such as Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Rand Paul and Rep. Michele Bachmann.

"In fact, I'm taking my charm offensive on the road -- a Texas barbeque with Ted Cruz, a Kentucky bluegrass concert with Rand Paul, and a book-burning with Michele Bachmann," Obama joked.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson would have had better success getting Obama out of office if he simply offered the president $100 million to drop out of last year's race, Obama quipped.

And on the 2016 election, the president noted in self-referential irony that potential Republican candidate Sen. Marco Rubio wasn't qualified because he hasn't even served a full term in the Senate. Obama served less than four years of his six-year Senate term before he was elected president in 2008.

"I mean, the guy has not even finished a single term in the Senate and he thinks he's ready to be President," Obama joked.

The gala also was an opportunity for six journalists, including Associated Press White House Correspondent Julie Pace, to be honored for their coverage of the presidency and national issues.

The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza won the Aldo Beckman Award, which recognizes excellence in the coverage of the presidency.

Pace won the Merriman Smith Award for a print journalist for coverage on deadline.

ABC's Terry Moran was the winner of the broadcast Merriman Smith Award for deadline reporting.

Reporters Jim Morris, Chris Hamby and Ronnie Greene of the Center for Public Integrity won the Edgar A. Poe Award for coverage of issues of national significance.

Rare 1913 nickel fetches over $3.1M at auction

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (AP) ? A rare century-old U.S. nickel that was once mistakenly declared a fake and forgotten about for decades has sold at auction for more than $3.1 million.

The 1913 Liberty Head nickel is one of only five known to exist. But it's all the more prized because of its unusual back story: It was surreptitiously and illegally cast, discovered in a car wreck that killed its owner, declared a fake, forgotten in a closet for decades and then declared the real deal.

It was offered up for sale Thursday by four Virginia siblings at a rare coin and currency auction in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg where it sold for well over the expected $2.5 million.

The winning bidders were two men from Lexington, Ky., and Panama City, Fla., who bought the coin in partnership, according to Heritage Auctions.

"Not only is it just one of only five known, genuine 1913-dated Liberty Head design nickels, this particular one was off the radar for decades until it literally came out of the closet after a nationwide search," said Heritage Auctions Vice President Todd Imhof.

The coin was struck at the Philadelphia mint in late 1912, the final year of its issue, but with the year 1913 cast on its face ? the same year the beloved Buffalo Head nickel was introduced.

A mint worker named Samuel W. Brown is suspected of producing the coin and altering the die to add the bogus date, according to Douglas Mudd, curator of the American Numismatic Association Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Col., which has held the coin for most of the past 10 years.

The coins' existence wasn't known until Brown offered them for sale at the American Numismatic Association Convention in Chicago in 1920, beyond the statute of limitations. The five remained together as a set under various owners until 1942.

A North Carolina collector, George O. Walton, purchased one of the coins in the mid-1940s for a reported $3,750. The coin was with him when he was killed in a car crash on March 9, 1962, and it was found among hundreds of coins scattered at the crash site.

One of Walton's heirs, his sister, Melva Givens of Salem, Va., was given the 1913 Liberty nickel after experts declared the coin a fake because of suspicions the date had been altered. The flaw probably happened because of Brown's imprecise work casting the planchet ? the copper and nickel blank disc used to create the coin.

"She kept the nickel in a box with family items in the closet, and it stayed there for four decades," said Givens' son, Ryan Givens of Salem.

After his mother's death, the siblings brought the coin to the 2003 American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money in Baltimore, where the four surviving 1913 Liberty nickels were being exhibited. A team of rare coin experts concluded it was the long-missing fifth coin. Each shared a small imperfection under the date.

Since its authentication, the Walton nickel has been on loan to the Colorado Springs museum and has been publicly exhibited nationwide.

"This is one of the greatest coins at that price range," said one of the successful bidders, Jeff Garrett of Lexington, Ky.

Drivers education for older drivers remains for 2 years, researcher finds

Apr. 25, 2013 ? In seeming contrast to the notion that the elderly often have memory problems, a new study from an HF/E researcher finds driver retraining to be an effective strategy for improving the safe-driving habits of older drivers over the long term.

In his Human Factors article, "The Long-Term Effects of Active Training Strategies on Improving Older Drivers' Scanning in Intersections: A Two Year Follow-up to Romoser and Fisher (2009)," Matthew R. E. Romoser conducted a follow up study to see if participants from a 2009 study who received training retained the safe driving behaviors. In 2009, the participants that received simulator training and video reviews of their driving performance increased their likelihood of scanning while negotiating an intersection by 100%.

Healthy older drivers, 70-89 years of age, from the trained and control groups of his previous study participated in a follow-up field drive in their own vehicles. Researchers recorded secondary looks, defined as looking away from the immediate path of the vehicle while entering intersections toward regions to the side from which other vehicles could appear. The participants' road-scanning behaviors were recorded using a head-mounted camera system.

Two years after their training, older drivers in the trained group still took secondary looks on average 73% of the time, more than one and a half times as often as pre-training levels. Control group drivers, who averaged secondary looks 41% of the time, saw no significant change in performance over the 2-year period.

"Training in the form of actively practicing target skills in a simulator provides drivers a means by which to reincorporate previously extinguished behaviors into their driving habits," says Remoser.

The study's results can guide the development of mature-driver retraining programs that might be incorporated into car insurance discount programs or future state licensing regulations.

(AP) ? A fire swept quickly through a psychiatric hospital outside Moscow early Friday, killing 38 people, most of them in their beds, officials said.

Health Ministry officials said that the one-story hospital brick-and-wood building housed patients with severe mental disorders.

An emergency ministry official said the fire started in a wooden annex and then spread to the main brick building which had wooden beams.

The patients were under sedatives and most of them did not wake up, Yuri Deshevykh of the emergency situations ministry told RIA Novosti.

At least 29 people were burned alive, said Irina Gumennaya, a spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee.

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyev said some of the hospital windows were barred.

Officials from the Russian Investigative Committee said they are looking at poor fire regulations and short circuit as possible causes for the blaze that engulfed the hospital in the Ramenskiy settlement, some 85 kilometers (53 miles) north of Moscow.

Investigators listed 38 people ? 36 patients and two doctors ? as dead. Only one nurse and two patients managed to escape, according to the health ministry. The emergency services also posted a list of the patients indicating they ranged in age from 20 to 76.

A spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee told Russian news agencies that most of the people died in their beds.

Belovoshin of the emergency ministry said that it took fire fighters an hour to get to the hospital following an emergency call because a ferry across the canal was closed and the fire fighters had to make a detour.

Vorobyev told Russian state-television that the fire alarm seems to have worked but the fire spread too quickly.

Russia has a poor fire safety record, with about 12,000 deaths reported in 2012. In January, a fire in an underground parking lot killed 10 migrant workers from Tajikistan who were working and living there. In a similar incident in September, 14 Vietnamese workers were killed by fire at a clothing factory near Moscow.

In one of the most high-profile case of negligence, more than 150 people died in a night club in the city of Perm after a pyrotechnic show ignited a wooden ceiling.

Exercise and Alternative Therapies for High Blood Pressure? They ...

meditation man outdoors 400x400 Exercise and Alternative Therapies for High Blood Pressure? They Work

By Randy Dotinga
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, April 22 (HealthDay News) ? Alternative treatments like transcendental meditation, biofeedback and guided breathing appear to reduce high blood pressure in some people, a new report suggests.

But only one method that does not involve medication ? aerobic exercise ? is both proven to have a major impact and highly recommended.

The report, by the American Heart Association, also says research doesn?t support a reduction in high blood pressure from other relaxation and meditation techniques, yoga or acupuncture. However, the quality of research into these strategies is limited, the report adds, suggesting that there?s still hope they have an effect.

?In general, there?s a surprising level of evidence supporting some of the alternative techniques being effective, and surprisingly little or conflicting evidence in regard to other techniques,? said Dr. Robert Brook, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Michigan. ?These alternative techniques are a neglected stepchild and often not given nearly as much attention or funding for research, and are often not taken as seriously as other approaches.?

Two things are clear, he said: The alternative approaches don?t appear to be harmful, and they shouldn?t be used instead of following a doctor?s advice regarding medication.

The American Heart Association launched its report to give guidance to doctors and patients about treatments for high blood pressure, Brook said. ?Traditionally, we?ll talk about weight loss, diet, salt restriction and exercise. They?re difficult to comply with, and people don?t follow them. We decided it was time to review all of the research into alternative ways to lower blood pressure.?

The report ranks aerobic exercise, like brisk walking, as having the greatest effect on high blood pressure and the highest quality research to support it.

Biofeedback, weight lifting, transcendental meditation and synchronized breathing (such as breathing to a series of tones) also scored well in terms of effectiveness.

When they?re effective, the techniques may reduce the systolic number in a high blood pressure reading ? the top number ? by a modest 5 to 10 millimeters of mercury (mmHg), Brook said. A reading of 140 or higher is a sign of potential trouble.

How do the strategies work to reduce blood pressure? It?s not clear in some cases, he said, although exercise appears to boost the functioning of blood vessels by widening them.

Samuel Sears, director of health psychology programs at East Carolina University, in Greenville, N.C., said the report is important but its focus misses the ?mental benefits? of alternative treatments. ?Patients seek and may gain broader benefits from some of these therapies, such as psychological and perceived control of their condition,? he said.

So, should you try these strategies?

Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, an associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said they?re generally considered safe. However, ?the inappropriate reliance on these approaches could result in delays in seeking medical treatment of hypertension,? she said. ?And many of these interventions are associated with out-of-pocket costs for patients, which is an additional consideration particularly if such interventions are ultimately shown not to be effective.?

The report appears April 22 in the journal Hypertension.

Pan-Jam plotting new strategy for next 10-30 years - Business ...

Steven Jackson, Business Reporter

Pan-Jamaican Investment Trust will determine its future strategy and management structure by September, following the passing of its founder and chairman Maurice Facey.

The result could see the emergence of a younger executive structure, according to newly appointed director Paul Hanworth who now holds two executive positions.

"It is now time for us to go back and look at the strategy of the company and decide what will be the appropriate structure going forward," said Hanworth in an interview with Wednesday Business.

His job as chief financial officer was expanded to incorporate the newly created post of chief operating officer. And he also joined the Pan-Jam board on April 10. Stephen Facey was also named chairman and he also retains his position as chief executive officer.

Maurice Facey, who transitioned on April 2, founded the company in the 1960s after selling his father's company. Facey then embarked on building landmark commercial high-rise towers and expansive shopping centres in Kingston.

DIVERSITY

In recent years the company has diversified its revenue streams into insurance, tourism and manufacturing. And last year, the company merged its property subsidiary First Jamaica into the group.

"The person who founded this company is no longer with us ... and we need to make sure that we can put the company in a position that it can survive for the next 10, 20 or 30 years," said Hanworth.

Essentially, two of the three core executives ? Hanworth and Stephen Facey ? are some five years from retirement age. The third, Paul Facey, the vice-president of investments, is in his mid-forties, said Hansworth. As such, the strategic planning could entail succession planning.

While Pan-jam evaluates its strategy for the future, the company will determine "whether to hire someone internally or from outside; and whether Stephen and I will plan to retire," Hanworth said.

Asked whether the dual roles that both he and Stephen Facey now hold would be split once the future direction is determined, he said: "That question is better answered when we do our strategy planning".

"For Stephen's positions maybe it would be split one day, but that is based on what comes out of the strategy redesign," he told Wednesday Business. "But I think my position will be split".

Stephen Facey was off the island and not immediately available for comment.

Hanworth indicated that the creation of his COO position reflected the formalisation of the job he has done for the conglomerate over the years, particularly with the new and increased investments in associate companies, including insurer Sagicor Life Jamaica, sauce-maker Walkerswood, Mavis Bank Coffee Factory and Chukka Caribbean Adventures.

J$21B IN ASSEts

"We are a fairly developed organisation and our revenue streams come from diverse sources. It's good from a governance perspective that you separate those functions," he said of his dual roles.

Pan-Jam's management structure currently comprises five members: chairman/CEO Stephen Facey, VP Paul Facey, CFO/COO Hanworth; director, accounting services Camelia Nelson; and group treasury manager Claudette Ashman-Ivey, according to the website which was updated to notify of the passing of the elder Facey, and new announced positions.

Pan-Jam is the 11th richest Jamaican stock market company by assets totalling J$21 billion, according to Wednesday Business estimates. The conglomerate made more than J$2 billion profit last year due to the performance of its associated businesses led by Sagicor Life Jamaica and Chukka Adventures.

The company's next big project is a Courtyard/Marriott hotel to be constructed in New Kingston this year.

Ex-CIA chief David Petraeus to teach in N.Y.

(Reuters) - David Petraeus, who resigned his post as CIA director amid revelations of an extra-marital affair with his biographer, will join City University of New York as a visiting professor, the school said on Tuesday.

His new appointment will begin in August at CUNY's Macaulay Honors College.

Before joining the CIA, Petraeus was a four-star general who commanded U.S. forces during troop surges in Iraq and Afghanistan, and he is credited with helping to pull Iraq from the brink of all-out civil war.

His affair with biographer Paula Broadwell forced his resignation as CIA director in November - a stunning downfall for a man who had been considered a potential contender for the White House.

"CUNY is profoundly honored to welcome Dr. Petraeus to our academic community," Dr. Matthew Goldstein, chancellor of CUNY, said in a statement.

Goldstein said that with Petraeus joining the school, students will have an opportunity to learn from a "distinguished leader" with experience in international security, intelligence and nation-building.

Petraeus, who earned a doctorate from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, said in a statement that as the son of an immigrant, he identifies with CUNY's large share of students with similar backgrounds.

In his latest research projects, Petraeus has examined such sectors as energy, manufacturing, information technology and life sciences, the university said.

Most Popular Mind Mapping Tool: Xmind

Mind mapping is a great way to brainstorm and organize your thoughts. With the right tool, you can save your map for later or share it with others to help you. Last week we asked you which tool you thought was the best, and then we highlighted the five best mind mapping tools. Now we're back to feature the winner.

XMind, the cross-platform, open-source mind-mapping app, took the top spot with just over 32% of the overall vote. Those of you who voted for it praised the fact that it's survived the test of time well, works the same on OS X as it does on Windows as it does in Linux, and, of course, the price tag for individual users doesn't hurt either.

Right behind it in second place with 25% of the votes cast was Freemind (and its successor, Freeplane), another completely free and cross platform mind mapping tool, that this time runs in Java and is GNU GPL licensed. In third place was Mindjet, bringing in 17% of the vote even though the app is largely aimed towards large organizations and is built to be a fully-featured brainstorming, task management, and project management suite. With 14% of the vote, MindNode came in fourth, offering touch-capable mind mapping for the iPad and elegant brainstorming on the Mac. Finally, bringing up the rear with 11% of the overall vote was Coggle, the free, easy-to-use, and richly featured webapp that brings mind mapping off of the desktop and to the masses.

Grill Both Sides of the Bread for the Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Making a grilled cheese sandwich isn't rocket science, but making a great grilled cheese sandwich is a bit of an art. Thankfully, J. Kenji L?pez-Alt over at Serious Eats shows us how to get the best grilled cheese every time. For starters: grill both sides of the bread, then add the cheese.

Kenji goes through all of the elements of making a great grilled cheese: using the right cheese and the best bread. You've probably heard the rules: pick a flavorful melting cheese, stick with slices over grated cheese, day old bread works well for grilled cheese, and don't use a bread with too many holes.

However, he also tackles the method of making that sandwich so you get the best possible results. Here's what he suggests:

The best method I've ever seen for making a perfect grilled cheese comes from Adam Kuban. His secret? Grill the bread on both sides. That's right. Grill two slices of bread in butter, flip'em over so that the browned sides are facing up, add your cheese, and close your sandwich so that the cheese is sandwiched between the browned surfaces. Not only will this get you better tasting bread infused with more butter, but it'll also give your cheese a head start on getting extra-melty.

He also suggests using salted butter instead of unsalted (or seasoning the sandwich with a pinch of kosher salt), and points out that low and slow is the best way to cook your grilled cheese: That the browning you get should be browning of the bread, not the milk solids in the butter (we have a tip to help make sure you don't over-brown, too). Hit the link below for more next-level grilled cheese tips.

Five of the best new mobile games

Mr. CrabEvery week a slew of blurb-worthy games debuts in iTunes App Store and Google Play. Often, the more innovative and independent publishers test the waters by releasing on iOS. Here?s a roundup of the five best games recently released.

Let?s start with a game that is truly family friendly. In Mr. Crab, you control the titular hat-clad character as he ascends to the top of each rotational level, rewarded with a shower of confetti. Anchoring the game are strategically placed arrows, which make the gameplay far less dizzying than it could have been. Along the way, Mr. Crab is tasked with rescuing smaller crabs, collecting multi-colored pearls, and using clams or birds as springboards. While the settings vary, the gameplay mechanics stay consistent. Also, don?t let Mr. Crab?s cuteness factor deceive; this game is pretty difficult, but loads of clawtastic fun.

The Other BrothersThe Other Brothers from 3D Attack Interactive is the closest a mobile game has come to replicating the Super Mario Bros. experience. Instead of plumbers, brothers Joe and Jim are auto mechanics roped into the typical rescue mission involving a distressed damsel. The game environment is grittier than Mario, featuring mobsters with uppercut attacks and machine guns, guard dogs, and arduous boss fights. Still, the game mechanics are practically the same as any episodic platformer, as you stomp baddies to increase your overall score and collect doves, which functions similarly to rings in SEGA?s Sonic the Hedgehog series. The game was developed to eventually support Android gaming, so keep your fingers crossed.

Nimble QuestNimble Quest, developed by Nimblebit, is another throwback mobile game combining fantasy role-playing and the arcade classic Snake. Instead of a rectangular snake consuming squares and circles, you steer a ?conga line of heroes,? all of which boast specialized abilities and attacks. The better you do slashing bad guys, the more heroes you unlock. Collecting blue and green gems enables you to purchase power-ups. There is an in-app purchasing system, but it isn?t necessary to enjoy the game. Nimble Quest?s gameplay can be a bit grinding yet remains pleasant. The game is set up with with service Everyplay, so you can share video replays of your most impressive Nimble Quest sessions via Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and email.

The major appeal in Warner Brothers?s fighting game is getting to pit famed DC Comics heroes and villains against each other. You start off with The Flash and less popular characters (Lex Luthor, Cyborg, Nightwing), and can select up to three for your fighting squad. Characters level up with the victories and eventually you unlock Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. The game uses fantastic touch and swipe controls for attacks and special moves, a combat control scheme first introduced in the popular Infinity Blade series. While it?s another game suffering from in-app purchase syndrome, you?ll marvel at the game?s brilliant graphics (even if it takes up 500 MB).

Into the DeadWith Into the Dead, PikPok Games delivered one of the most visually memorable and intense first person running games available as a mobile app. You?re dropped into a field and must run away from packs of the undead. The developers smartly offer four different control schemes from the get-go to make players as comfortable as they can be as the dodge snarling corpses and inanimate obstacles. At first, you?re equipped only with your faceless character?s shallow breathing, but you can pick up weapons during your endless escape. As a freemium game, you can purchase coins right away and ?fast unlock? all the weapons. If you don?t feel like dropping your next paycheck on a mobile game, play through and complete missions to unlock items. The horror elements here aren?t for younger kids, as the last sounds you hear at a run?s end are screams and the zombie munching on your character.

Prince Harry is presented with a jacket by Inge Solheim as he attends the launch for the Walking with the Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge on April 19 in London.

LONDON ? Prince Harry, Britain's third in line to the throne, will take part in a race to the South Pole alongside wounded British servicemen and women, he announced on Friday.

The 208-mile trek to the South Pole will see Britain's royal compete against teams from the United States and Commonwealth countries.

"As a member of the British team, I will have a brew (tea) on ready for you when you join us at the Pole," he said in a speech, referring to participants from other countries.

Harry took part in a 2011 expedition to the North Pole organized by the same charity, Walking with the Wounded. Describing qualities he said he admired in his fellow participants, he said: "Physical strength, endurance, a sense of comradeship, absolutely.

"But there's something else, something deeper than that. Something that continues to draw me back to this charity and these people time and again ? and always will."

Will the GOP Embrace Amnesty?

Click if you like this column!

During President Eisenhower's first term, 60 years ago, the United States faced an invasion across its southern border.

Illegal aliens had been coming since World War II. But, suddenly, the number was over 1 million. Crime was rising in Texas. The illegals were taking the jobs of U.S. farm workers.

Under Gen. Joseph May Swing, the Immigration and Naturalization Service launched "Operation Wetback" and began rounding up and deporting Mexican border-crossers by ship and bus. By the end of Ike's second term, illegal entries had fallen by 90 percent.

Eisenhower, who had tapped his nuclear hole card twice -- first, to force the Chinese to agree to a truce in Korea, then to halt their shelling of the offshore islands in 1958 -- was a no-nonsense president.

Measured by population and gross national product, Eisenhower's America was but half the size of today's America. Yet, in the 1950s, we were in many ways a stronger and more self-confident country.

We had universal military service, and few complained. As for the deportation of the Mexicans, they had broken in, they did not belong here, and they were going back. End of discussion.

Contrast the rigorous response of Ike's America to an invasion across our southern border to the hand-wringing moral paralysis of our political elite in dealing with 11-12 million illegal aliens in our midst.

We are to stop using terms like illegal aliens, we are told. For it shows insensitivity. And compassion commands that we bring these folks "out of the shadows" and "put them on a path to citizenship."

One understands Democrats' motives in pushing this amnesty. Perhaps nine of 10 illegals are from Third World countries, and folks of Asian, African and Hispanic descent voted 4-to-1 Democratic in 2012.

Sen. Chuck Schumer and Democrats are writing an immigration bill that will create millions of new citizens who will vote to bury the Party of Ronald Reagan forever.

But why are Republicans collaborating in erecting the scaffolding on which their party is to be hanged?

A year ago, the GOP platform declared, "We oppose amnesty because it would have the effect of encouraging illegal immigration and would give an unfair advantage to those who have broken our laws."

What has changed since then?

Yet, today, with Cuban-American Sen. Marco Rubio providing cover -- a "very positive force," purrs President Obama -- Republicans are about to trash their platform and vote an amnesty for 11-12 million illegals. Why?

Frugal pope nixes bonus for Vatican employees

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The global economic crisis is hitting Vatican employees in their cassock pockets.

The Vatican said Thursday that Pope Francis, known for his frugal ways, decided Vatican employees won't be getting the bonus that traditionally comes with the election of a new pope.

In the past, the Vatican's 4,500-plus workers ? both religious and lay ? would receive an extra little something upon the death of one pope and another upon the election of his successor: In 2005, the total reportedly came to 1,500 euros (nearly $2,000) apiece.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said that given tough economic times ? the Vatican posted a 15 million-euro deficit in 2011 ? "it didn't seem possible or appropriate to burden the Vatican's budget with a considerable, unforeseen extra expense."
