Queen Elizabeth graces the front page of Google today in the UK in a doodle marking her diamond jubilee, offering the rest of the world but a glimpse of the playful pop art and consumer kitsch on display here in Britain.

Scots guardsmen cupcake toppers, union jacks on toothpicks, ice queen scoops. Bunting: enough to string together the old empire. Royal photos on thimbles, spoons, tea cups, shot glasses, egg cups, tea towels ? the usual tat, as the Brits say. Jubilee thongs? Yes.

Then there?s the cleverness contest surrounding the WWII-era slogan, ?Keep Calm and Carry On.? Written on a women's compact: ?Keep Calm and Powder On.?
Comparatively, Google?s doodle is an understated affair. The letter O?s are diamonds, symbolic of the 60th (diamond) anniversary on the throne. The E sits as a jewel in the queen?s crown. The queen appears in two-dimensional contour; her beloved corgis, however, look ready to leap off the page.

The playful riffs on royal themes reflect the generally favorable mood toward the royals of late.

A YouGov poll last month found 67 percent agreeing the monarchy is good for Britain, and 86 percent approve of Queen Elizabeth. This is up from the days when her children's divorces dominated the headlines and her slowness to show emotion over the death of Princess Diana frustrated many.

Still, the public mood is not really one of royal reverence. Britons are in party mode at the start of a long weekend ? Monday and Tuesday being holidays as part of the four-day official jubilee celebration. Many Londoners took the chance to flee on summer vacations, as foreign and British tourists crowd into the city for events that include Sunday?s royal family flotilla on the Thames and Tuesday?s carriage procession.

Among the street art for the crowds will be the construction Sunday of a 94-sq.-ft. portrait of Queen Elizabeth made from 3,120 squares of cake ? one for each week of her reign.

German-born baker Gerhard Jenne came up with the idea. Mr. Jenne dipped each piece of lemon cake into one of 24 frosting colors, turning each into a pixel of this icing illustration.

Jenne?s a fan of the queen, but not so much so that he feels the need to become her subject even 30 years after moving to London. He doesn?t expect to meet her on Sunday, when he publicly arranges the cake squares into the portrait.

?It?s very interesting how the queen has changed. Even from 30 years ago, [the royals] are much closer to the people now,? he says. ?You almost feel like she might come see you?. There could just be a 1 in 40 million chance.?

After spending hundreds of hours on the cake, he expects it to be gobbled up within 20 minutes when it?s opened up to the crowds.

Some customers in his Konditor & Cook bakeries have asked him if it?s proper for an image of Her Highness to be eaten.

?I just said yes, it?s fine by me. At the end of the day, it?s a cake, it?s a bit of fun. And she seems like a humorous person.?

BOY & Bear got the welcome they deserved Sunday night when they played to a packed house at the Empire Theatre.

The venue's significance wasn't lost on the band, who followed strong support acts Tim Sparrow and The Jungle Giants.

"I hope you don't get offended when I call you 'regional', but not all the regional places we play look like this," singer Dave Hosking said.

"This is beautiful."

It was the first time the band had graced a Toowoomba stage and following their stellar 90-minute performance, hopefully won't be their last.

They pumped out the crowd favourites, including Feeding Line, Milk and Sticks and Part Time Believer, but it was their infamous cover of a Crowded House classic that was the real standout.

Fall at your feet, played midway through the set, was given a Neil Young makeover with a few bars of Heart of Gold played midway through.

And while drummer Tim Hart spoke about the perils of "gold star stickers that always fold up at the corners" in between songs, the audience were treated to two new songs from the boys including Three-headed woman.

If the new material is any indication of what's to come, Boy & Bear fans should be excited.

Prior to their Toowoomba show, guitarist Killian Gavin said the rest of this year would be spent on tour and writing new material.

"We'll be back overseas for festivals, and then keep working on album number two," he said.
It was definitely a gold star performance by one of Australia's best local acts.

36 arrested in Puerto Rico airport drug running ring

Thirty-six people were arrested on Wednesday in a crackdown on a drug trafficking ring that used Puerto Rico's main airport to smuggle large quantities of cocaine off the island aboard U.S.-bound passenger flights, authorities said.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said the 36 detainees, including 22 suspects rounded up at San Juan's International Airport, were among 45 people indicted for smuggling more than 61,000 pounds of cocaine out of the U.S. territory on commercial flights to the U.S. mainland since 1999.

"It's an important blow," said Laila Rico, a spokeswoman for the DEA's Caribbean Division, which is headquartered in Puerto Rico.

"The Puerto Rico airport is sought-after by drug dealers because it's basically a mid-point between South American countries and the United States and offers an easy entry point," Rico said.

She was referring to the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, the point from which the bulk of the drugs were flown to Miami and Orlando, in Florida, and Newark, New Jersey, aboard flights operated by American Airlines.

The DEA said in a statement that some suspects caught up in the drug bust were current or former American Airlines employees and airport personnel, who used a designated bathroom to hand over cocaine to couriers preparing to board U.S.-bound flights.

Cargo handlers on the payroll of the drug ring also worked to ensure that drug-laden suitcases were placed aboard U.S.-bound flights, the DEA said.

"The defendants in this investigation not only utilized their positions and security access to smuggle large quantities of illegal narcotics, but they also compromised the safety and security at one of the Caribbean's most vital airports," Pedro Janer, the special agent who runs the DEA's operations across the Caribbean, said in a statement.

Puerto Rico, a U.S. commonwealth of about 4 million people, has long been known as a leading transshipment point for the smuggling of illicit drugs out of South America and into the United States.

Three of the suspects arrests on Wednesday were detained in the United States, according to Rico. She said two were nabbed at Miami International Airport and one at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
