In the past 13 years, all 13 Stanley Cup champions fell short of raising the Cup another consecutive time. The first part of my series looked at how the champions from 1999, 2000 and 2001 failed to repeat. Part two studied how the 2002, 2003 and 2004 champions missed the chance to win again. Last week, part three explained how the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 champions were undone the next year. Finally, this series ends by exploring the way the 2010, 2011 and 2012 champions went home early.
2010: Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins came into the 2010 playoffs facing off against the Ottawa Senators in the quarterfinal round. The Senators got the first win of the series, 5-4, but the Penguins jumped back into it with a 2-1 victory to even the series. If Ottawa hoped for a little boost from being back at home, they didn?t get it: Pittsburgh won Game 3 by a score of 4-2 and then lit the lamp for a 7-4 win in Game 4. Teetering on the brink of elimination, the Senators did extend the series by winning 4-3 in Game 5, which was the longest game in their team?s history?it went to triple overtime. Game 6 was also decided in extra time, but in just one period this time and not in Ottawa?s favor: Pittsburgh won 4-3 and advanced to the conference semifinals.
In the next round, the Penguins met another Canadian team, the Montreal Canadiens. They opened the series with a 6-3 win that the Habs answered with a 3-1 victory. Following a Penguins 2-0 shutout in which both goals came in the third period, the series grew very tight. Montreal and Pittsburgh traded one-goal wins back and forth: Montreal won Game 4, Pittsburgh Game 5, Montreal Game 6. In Game 7, though, the Penguins fell?Montreal built up a four-goal lead that Pittsburgh simply couldn?t overcome and they lost 5-2. With that win, the 2010 Canadiens, the eighth seed in the playoffs, managed to beat both the President?s Trophy-holding Washington Capitals and the defending Stanley Cup champions. These games were also the last to be played in the Penguins? old Mellon Arena because they upgraded to new digs at the Consol Energy Center for 2010-11. Interestingly, the Canadiens also played in the first game at Mellon Arena.
Notable Penguins included Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz, who are all still on the team today.
Meanwhile in the Western Conference, the Chicago Blackhawks were starting to take flight. Matched up with the Nashville Predators in the quarterfinals, they put together a six-game series that included two shutouts and a hard-fought overtime win before sending the Predators home with a 5-3 defeat. They then met the Vancouver Canucks for a high-scoring six-game series: every single game was decided by at least four goals. The Canucks started things off with a 5-1 win in the Windy City, but the Blackhawks answered by winning 4-2. Games 3 and 4 in British Columbia were all about the visiting team as Chicago put together a 5-2 win thanks in great part to a Dustin Byfuglien hat trick, then built on it with a 7-4 victory that had a Jonathan Toews hat trick. Perhaps embarrassed by the back-to-back hat tricks, Vancouver won Game 5 4-1 and elongated things, though Chicago won 5-1 in Game 6 and took the series victory.
They then proceeded to take down the San Jose Sharks in a four-game sweep and faced off with the Philadelphia Flyers (who?d just finished off the Canadiens in five games, followed by Mike Richards touching the Prince of Wales trophy, laughing at superstition) for the Stanley Cup. The series began with a downpour of goals as Chicago won 6-5. The downpour let up and Chicago won Game 2 by a 2-1 score. Philadelphia took Game 3 in overtime, preventing a 0-3 standing in the series, and built up a better record with a 5-3 Game 4 win. The goal downpour came back temporarily with a Blackhawks 7-4 win for Game 5. Facing a possibly decisive Game 6, the two teams whipped leads back and forth, Scott Hartnell tied it late in the third and then in overtime, Patrick Kane scored the famous ?Where?s the puck?? goal to win the Stanley Cup for the Blackhawks? first time in 49 years.
2011: Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks came into the 2011 playoffs facing a rematch with the Canucks, but this time in the quarterfinals. This time, though, things were different, and that became evident when Vancouver shut out Chicago 2-0 at home to start the series. The Blackhawks tried hard to even the series, and almost did, but Vancouver got a 4-3 win. The Canucks then completely built up a 3-0 series lead with a 3-2 win in Game 3. With the Blackhawks? backs against the wall, they began to create a comeback, starting with a 7-2 victory in Game 4. Then came a 5-0 shutout at Rogers Arena. Ben Smith?s overtime goal in Game 6 forced Game 7 and saw Chicago even the series after falling deep into a hole, but Vancouver found an overtime answer too and won the series with a 2-1 victory.
Notable Blackhawks included Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa and Duncan Keith?all still Blackhawks today.
Meanwhile in the Eastern Conference, the classic rivalry between the Canadiens and the Boston Bruins was back in force. The Canadiens began the series by winning Game 1 with a 2-0 shutout and Game 2 by a 3-1 win, both in Massachusetts, before taking it back to Canada. But the Bruins started fighting back, piecing together a 4-2 win, adding on a 5-4 overtime victory and a 2-1 double overtime win to grab the series lead. Montreal answered with a 2-1 win to force a Game 7, which Boston won 4-3 thanks to Nathan Horton?s overtime goal.
The Bruins then faced the Flyers in the conference semifinals?the team that came out of a 0-3 hole to win their semifinal series just a year earlier. The Bruins started off the series with a 7-3 win, added on a 3-2 overtime victory and piled on a third 5-1 win to create yet another three-game series lead. This time, though, instead of slipping and possibly letting the Flyers into the series, they swept them out with another 5-1 win.
In the conference final, the Bruins faced another seven-game series, this time against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning blasted into the series by winning 5-2, though the Bruins evened it up with a 6-5 victory and added a 2-0 shutout for the series lead. Tampa Bay bounced back at home via a 5-3 win that Boston replied to with a 3-1 win, placing them on the brink of elimination. But after the Lightning got a 5-4 win in Game 6, it became a full-length series. Finally, in a completely penalty-free Game 7, the Bruins took a 1-0 win and a trip to the Stanley Cup Final.
Vancouver awaited in the Final and opened the series with a 1-0 shutout, grabbing the lead with a 3-2 overtime win that was settled just 11 seconds after the extra period began. But then the Bruins blew open Game 3 and put away eight goals for an 8-1 win. All eight goals came after Horton was hit by Aaron Rome and wheeled off the ice, his series ending early. Boston then added a Game 4 shutout, beating Vancouver 4-0. Vancouver answered by shutting out the Bruins 1-0 again and grabbing the series lead once more. Boston sent the series to seven with a 5-2 Game 6 win and then another repeated score of their own, a 4-0 shutout in Game 7 to win the Stanley Cup.
2012: Boston Bruins
The Bruins entered the 2012 playoffs up against the Washington Capitals in the quarterfinals. It took until overtime in Game 1 for anyone to score at all, and by that time that?s all the Bruins needed for a win. Washington came back to get their own 2-1 win in Game 2 and level the series. The Bruins? 4-3 win in Game 3 was just the third in a pattern that would continue for the entire series: one-goal victories. It was replied to by a Capitals 2-1 win in Game 4 and a 4-3 win in Game 5. Now with the Bruins against the wall, they fought back to get a 4-3 victory and take it to seven all over again. The series ended in almost the same way it began: an overtime goal, except this time it cemented a 2-1 Capitals victory and sent the Bruins to a long summer.
Notable Bruins included Rich Peverley, Milan Lucic and Andrew Ference, all still on the team today.
Right now, we don?t know who the next Stanley Cup champion is. It will not be the Capitals, though, as they were eliminated after a seven-game semifinal series with the New York Rangers, who are currently still in the conference final. Will the inability to repeat continue to plague champions in the near future? Only time will tell.
Emma Harger is a Boston Bruins fan who truly enjoys learning about hockey history of all kinds. To her, one of the best parts of writing this series was reading about how each of these teams fought uniquely to try to repeat, even though they weren?t successful. She hopes you enjoyed this series, too.
