A ?best friend? relationship is an indispensable relationship | Pastor ...

Scripture Reading:? 1 Samuel 18:1-5

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 18:1

After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.

The printed key verse for today says that Jonathan became one in spirit with David, which is a NIV translation.? The original Hebrew is closer to the NASB?s translation: ??the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David.?? The Hebrew word for knit is ?qasar? which literally means to bind or tie together; a league together.? The Hebrew word for soul is ?nephesh? and refers to life, appetites, desires, emotions and passions.

Hopefully these explanations will help us understand the relationship between Jonathan and David.? Their bond of friendship was built on their common desires, and how they did life. In other words, this idea of friendship does not come out of the blue; there are reasons people become best friends.? It?s good to be friendly to everyone.? In fact, it is Christ like, but a ?best friend? relationship is an indispensible relationship.

A best friendship is a friendship where souls are connected.? You have heard married couples use the phrase ?soul mates.?? The literal definition of the soul is really the life we live, which equals a lifestyle.? When two people connect by having similar lifestyles, it forms a bond much deeper than just being friendly.? Studies indicate that if you have one or two best friends in a lifetime, you are above average.? This is especially true of men.? (Continued)

Father, you have made us to be in relationships with other people.? Help me to develop friendships that last a lifetime!? In Jesus? name, amen.
