(AP) ? Nigerian author Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani was just 10 years old when she first read Chinua Achebe's groundbreaking novel "Things Fall Apart."

She devoured the rich use of Igbo proverbs in his book, which forever changed Africa's portrayal in literature.

That inspiration carried over into the creation of a pivotal character in her debut work, "I Do Not Come to You by Chance," which pulls readers into the dark and greedy world of Nigerian Internet scam artists.

"Like many contemporary Nigerian writers, I grew up on a literary diet that comprised a huge dose of Achebe's works," she said. "My parents were so proud of his accomplishments, and quoted the Igbo proverbs in his books almost as frequently as they quoted Shakespeare."

Achebe's death at the age of 82 was announced Friday by his publisher. His works inspired countless writers around the world, though the literary style of "Things Fall Apart," first published in 1958, particularly transformed the way novelists wrote about Africa.

Adewale Maja-Pearce, a literary critic who succeeded Achebe as the editor of Heinemann's African Writers Series, called him a pioneer whose "contribution is immeasurable."

In breaking with the Eurocentric lens of viewing the continent through the eyes of outsiders, Achebe took readers to a place full of complex characters who told their stories in their own words and style.

Achebe once wrote that a major goal "was to challenge stereotypes, myths, and the image of ourselves and our continent."

He resisted the idea that he was the father of modern African literature, recalling a rich and ancient tradition of storytelling on the continent. Still, his influence on younger writers of the late 20th and early 21st century, particularly those from his homeland, was undeniable.

"Achebe's influence has been completely seminal and inspirational, and there are writers that have been called the School of Achebe who have imitated his style," said Chukwuma Azuonye, professor of African and African Diaspora Literatures at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.

A newer crop of successful novelists with ties to Nigeria has broken away from Achebe's mode, Azuonye said, developing their own modernist style of writing that focuses on clashes of cultures and other issues facing Nigerians abroad.

Among those influenced by Achebe was Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who won the Orange Prize for Fiction for "Half of a Yellow Sun."

On Friday, she released an elegy she had written for Achebe in the Igbo language.

"Something has happened. Something big has happened. Chinua Achebe is gone. A great writer, a man of great wisdom, a man of good heart," she wrote.

"Who are we going to boast about? Who are we going to take out to the world? Who is going to guide us? A storm has passed! Tears fill my eyes.

"Chinua Achebe, go in peace. It is well with you. Go in peace."

Nigerian novelist Lola Shoneyin, whose works include "The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives," says Achebe's fiction gives her something new each time she reads his work.

"In the last five decades, just about every post-colonial African author, one way or another, has been engaged in a creative call-and-response with Chinua Achebe," she said.

Igoni Barrett, the author of a collection of stories called "From Caves of Rotten Teeth," said Achebe had achieved a "saintly status among Nigerian writers" through his pioneering involvement in the African Writers Series.

"Chinua Achebe was an inspiration to me not only for his singular talent and his dedication to truth in art and life, but also because he had the fortitude to overcome the countless disappointments of the Nigerian state," he said.

One of Senegal's best-known novelists, 66-year-old Boubacar Boris Diop, was in high school when he read "Things Fall Apart." He says that in it, he found "the real Africa."

"I systematically advise young authors to read Chinua Achebe. I've often bought copies of 'Things Fall Apart' and offered them to young writers. It's well written ? in the sense that it's not written at all. In it, you won't find any great lyrical phrases. That's the great force of this book. It's written in simple language," said Diop.

"He wrote about a continent that is far from perfect, but which at the same time has things within it that fill you with wonder."

Pope spoke of celibacy rule, being 'dazzled' by girl

Filippo Monteforte / AFP - Getty Images file

Priests and seminarians wave to Pope Francis during his inauguration mass at St Peter's square on March 19. In an interview last year, he said he favored the church's rule on celibacy but suggested it "can change."

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

Pope Francis suggested in an interview last year that the Catholic Church's rule that priests be celibate "can change" and admitted he was tempted by a woman as a young seminarian.

He said that the married clergy of the Eastern churches are "very good priests" and those pushing for the same in Roman Catholicism do so "with a certain pragmatism."

For now, though, "the discipline of celibacy stands firm," he said, adding that priests should quit if they can't abstain from sex or if they get a woman pregnant.

The former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio's?comments -- published in the Spanish-language book ?On the Heavens and the Earth? and translated by the Catholic news website Aleteia?-- were made when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires.

Father Thomas Reese, a Vatican analyst for the National Catholic Reporter, said he was surprised by the remarks because "the last few popes have been pretty clear they were not open to changing it or having a discussion about it."

While Bergoglio certainly wasn't advocating for a rule change, "it looks like he may be willing to talk about it," Reese said.

The future pope began the conversation with a personal anecdote from his years as a seminarian.

"I was dazzled by a girl I met at an uncle's wedding," he said, according to Aleteia. "I was surprised by her beauty, her intellectual brilliance ... and, well, I was bowled over for quite a while.

"I kept thinking and thinking about her. When I returned to the seminary after the wedding, I could not pray for over a week because when I tried to do so, the girl appeared in my head. I had to rethink what I was doing."

He said he had to choose between the girl and the priesthood, and though he picked the latter, he knows not everyone would.

"When something like this happens to a seminarian, I help him go in peace to be a good Christian and not a bad priest," Bergoglio said.

"In the Western Church to which I belong, priests cannot be married as in the Byzantine, Ukrainian, Russian or Greek Catholic Churches. In those Churches, the priests can be married, but the bishops have to be celibate. They are very good priests," he added.

"In Western Catholicism, some organizations are pushing for more discussion about the issue. For now, the discipline of celibacy stands firm. Some say, with a certain pragmatism, that we are losing manpower. If, hypothetically, Western Catholicism were to review the issue of celibacy, I think it would do so for cultural reasons (as in the East), not so much as a universal option."

He said that "for the moment" he was in favor of maintaining the celibacy rule "because we have ten centuries of good experiences rather than failures."

But, he added, "It is a matter of discipline, not of faith. It can change."

In the meantime, though, he said celibacy should not be treated with a wink and a nod. Any priest who strays and becomes a father "has to leave the ministry," he said.

"Now, if a priest tells me he got excited and that he had a fall, I help him to get on track again. There are priests who get on track again and others who do not," he said.

"The double life is no good for us. I don't like it because it means building on falsehood. Sometimes I say: 'If you can not overcome it, make your decision.'"

Marines to identify seven who died in Nevada mortar blast

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - The U.S. military plans to identify on Wednesday the seven Marines who died in an explosion at a Nevada munitions depot when a mortar round detonated prematurely in its launching tube during a live-fire training exercise, a military spokesman said in a statement.

The Monday night blast killed seven Marines from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and injured eight other service members at the Hawthorne Army Depot in western Nevada. The cause was under investigation.

The blast was among the deadliest such military training accidents on U.S. soil in recent years. In February 2012, seven Marines were killed when two helicopters collided during an exercise along the California-Arizona border.

"Although this is a very difficult time for the entire depot and our small town, we will continue to work closely with the Marine Corps during this tragic incident," Hawthorne Army Depot Commander Lieutenant Colonel Craig M. Short said in a statement.

The Marines killed on Monday had been undergoing training for the past month at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, California, and at Hawthorne, about 92 miles southeast of Reno, Nevada.

Those killed have been identified only as members of the 2nd Marine Division, but have not been further identified pending the notification of their families.

Seven Marines and a Navy sailor were also wounded. Of those, six were in serious or very serious condition, including the sailor, while two were treated and released, the Marines said in a statement.

The Marines ordered a blanket suspension of the use of 60mm mortars, the type involved in the explosion, on Tuesday pending a review after the blast, Marine Corps spokeswoman Captain Kendra Motz said in a statement.

The Marines described the mortar involved as lightweight, and said it was typically fired from a stationary position.

Hawthorne Army Depot is a 147,000-acre (60,000-hectacre) site used for the storage and destruction of demilitarized ammunition. Its location in Nevada's isolated high desert is also considered an ideal training environment for Special Operations forces preparing for deployments to Southwest Asia, according to a U.S. military website.

The facility was established as a naval staging area for bombs, rockets and ammunition, and was used by the Navy during most of World War Two. It was transferred to the Army in 1977.

The accident came a week after a U.S. military plane assigned to a Washington state Naval Air Station crashed during a routine training flight, killing all three crew members on board.

Scientist at Work Blog: Lizard Olympics

Jonathan Losos, professor and curator of herpetology at Harvard?s Museum of Comparative Zoology, writes from Colombia, where he is studying the biodiversity of anole lizards, an evolutionarily successful group that has produced 400 species throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean islands. For more on anoles, see anoleannals.org.

Feb. 24, 2013

Whether it was the slightly better weather, a good night?s sleep, or our improving searching skills, I don?t know, but our second day in the field was a vast improvement over the first. We located 15 lizards ? nearly four times our first day?s catch. And our success continued in subsequent days, so that by week?s end we had collected data on 42 individuals.

As a result, we?ve been able to learn a lot about the natural history of the variable-scaled anole (Anolis heterodermus). Now we know where it occurs in the habitat, how it moves, and what it eats. Most importantly, we?ve been able to test our idea that this Colombian species is very similar to habitat specialists on Caribbean islands.

Almost nothing has been published in the scientific literature about the variable-scaled anole. Nonetheless, from the scant records and our examination of specimens in natural history museum collections, we had formulated the hypothesis that the variable-scaled anole is ecologically and behaviorally similar to the twig-using anole species that have evolved independently on each of the large islands of the Caribbean.

Twig anoles, as their name implies, are generally found on narrow woody surfaces. Their slender bodies and short tails and legs allow them to navigate narrow and irregular surfaces with ease. But the adaptations come at a cost ? twig anoles are slower than molasses. What they don?t have in quickness, however, they make up for in cover. Twig anoles generally are well camouflaged and they search out immobile prey, moving slowly along narrow branches, twigs, and vines.

Our examination of the lizards confirms that they have convergently evolved many of the characteristics of Caribbean twig species, especially the shape of their head, their large and heterogeneously-sized scales, and, of course, their short legs. But they are not dead-ringers. Their tails are too long and they are green, whereas twig anoles are usually some shade of grey. Small differences aside, the big question is whether this convergent morphological evolution translates into similar behavior.

And the answer is a resounding yes.

In true twig anole fashion, the variable-scaled anole was almost always found on very narrow branches and vines: 97 percent were first noted on surfaces less than one inch in diameter. And, like twig anoles, they are incredibly slow moving, almost never running or jumping, or even walking. Rather, they lift one green foot at a time, moving at an almost imperceptible pace. These lizards are masters of stealth, but they have one further trick up their scaly sleeves ? when it is windy, they coordinate their movements with gusts of wind, so that they are moving at the same time as the vegetation around them, making their movements inconspicuous.

Though our field data were confirmatory, we wanted to test the twig anole hypothesis in one additional way: biomechanical convergence. The big heads and short legs of Caribbean twig anoles confer great biting ability, but poor sprinting performance. Is the same true in the variable-scaled anole?

To find out, one member of our team, the French researcher Anthony Herrel, conducted a sort of lizard Olympics back at our field quarters. First, in the 1-meter dash, the lizards were placed on a long, straight branch. A tap to the tail substituted for the starter gun and the lizards would take off at top speed ? sometimes with further tail-tapping encouragement ? until they reached the other end. Like any good sporting event, a slow-motion video replay is involved, in this case to determine just how fast they ran. After testing each lizard three times, with an hour?s rest between each race, we then moved to the iron-man competition. But in this case it could be called an iron-tooth competition. To determine how hard they can bite, each lizard was induced to chomp onto a sophisticated force sensor that can calculate the force generated by their jaws. This is easier than it sounds, because when handled, these lizards often open their mouths and will latch onto anything that comes within biting range.

Once again, the variable-scaled anole showed that it belongs in the twig anole pantheon. Their legs may be slow, but their jaws are another matter. Their big heads and large muscles can pack quite a wallop. A male measuring three and a half inches can bite as hard as a small cat. I actually wasn?t surprised when Anthony reported that finding, having already discovered as much while capturing a lizard earlier in the day.

We have learned a lot about the habits of this little known reptile after only a week in the field. We also now know that, at least in this case, a mainland species of anole has evolved in very similar ways to its Caribbean habitat counterparts. Nonetheless, there is much left to discover. The climate here is very different from that of the Caribbean. How does this high-altitude lizard cope? The variable-scaled anole also shows much more variation in its color: some green lizards have black patches on the side or a blue tail, and other lizards?in the same population?are not green at all. Why?

Scientists quickly learn that in research, each answer usually leads to three new questions. In this case, though, these questions will have to wait, because tomorrow we?re headed to the beach in Venezuela.

Asia stocks bounce back after Cyprus scare

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Tuesday, shaking off jitters sparked by a plan to give bank deposits in Cyprus a haircut to help fund the European country's bailout.

Most benchmarks rose modestly while Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 2 percent to 12,467.18 as the yen began to drop against the dollar.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.5 percent to 22,201.93. South Korea's Kospi rose 1 percent to 1,987.52. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.2 percent to 5,023.50. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia rose, while the Philippines dropped.

Stock markets dropped around the world Monday as jitters intensified over an agreement between cash-strapped Cyprus and its lenders to fund a 15.8 billion euros ($20.4 billion) rescue plan by taxing deposits in the country's banks.

It would be the first time in the European debt crisis that bank deposits have been seized and has stoked fears of bank runs among the 16 other countries that use the euro.

Cypriot authorities delayed a parliamentary vote Monday on the plan and ordered the country's banks to remain closed until Thursday while they try to modify the deal to lessen the impact on small depositors.

On Wall Street, the Dow dropped 0.4 percent to 14,452.06. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.6 percent to 1,552.10. The Nasdaq composite index dropped 0.4 percent to 3,237.59.

Benchmark oil for April delivery was up 17 cents to $93.91 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 29 cents to close at $93.74 per barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2959 from $1.2948 late Monday in New York. The dollar rose to 95.66 yen from 95.42 yen.

Panel: Thumbs down on anthrax vaccine test in kids

(AP) ? Don't look for testing of the anthrax vaccine to begin in children any time soon.

Controversy arose last year as experts debated whether such studies should be done to learn how to treat children in case of a bioterror attack.

But a presidential commission says the government would have to take multiple steps ? including more safety research in young adults ? before it would be ethical to consider tests in children.

"The safety of our children is paramount, and we have to get this precisely right," said Dr. Amy Gutmann, who chairs the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, which released its report Tuesday.

More than a decade after the anthrax attacks, the government has a multibillion-dollar stockpile of drugs and vaccines to fight an array of threats. There's no information on whether those so-called countermeasures would work in children like they're expected to help their parents, or even what dose to use. Yet if a large attack were to occur, children undoubtedly would receive those untested products.

Worried about how to handle an emergency, a government advisory group recommended studying the anthrax vaccine in children if independent ethics experts agreed it could be done appropriately. The Obama administration put that question to the panel.

Tuesday's answer: Children don't gain any benefit from pre-attack research with the anthrax vaccine or other countermeasures. So the panel said such studies would be ethical only if they presented no more than minimal risk to participants ? like the risk from a routine medical check-up. Determining that would require, among other things, more testing in adults, the panel added. Something that proved safe in 18-year-olds, for example, might be a candidate to study next in 16- and 17-year-olds.

However, the government should plan now for how it would study children who receive those treatments in the event of an attack, the panel said.

The Health and Human Services Department, which requested the advice, said it would review the findings.

The Beautiful Beaches Of Lloret De Mar

Situated on the northeastern coast of Spain, the town of Lloret de Mar is a popular resort town in the Costa Brava. It is easily accessible from airports of the larger Spanish cities, and when you travel the easy 70 kilometres from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar you will be well rewarded for your effort.

The history of the town dates back to the Romans who first settled there after the Iberians. They also settled the nearby towns and villages, but the first time the name appeared in writing was in 966 A.D. Over the centuries the town has had its ups and downs and now is a thriving seaside resort. It caters to tourists who want to explore the deep and richly interesting history of the area, as well as those who take the transfer from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar simply to enjoy the stunning beaches. While you are here, be sure to enjoy the delights of one (all all) of the five, fabulous main beaches the town offers.

The Platja de Lloret

The Platja de Lloret, or the Central Beach, is the main beach of the resort town. When you arrive after the short trip from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar, you find this central beach one of the most accessible and, in the height of the season, the most populous. It is no wonder that people flock to its 1,650-metre strip of golden sand with unending opportunities for entertainment. When you are not busy relaxing and soaking up the sun you can parasail, swim, snorkel, water ski, paddle boat, rent a canoe for a bit, and much more. There are always lifeguards on duty and plenty of places where you can get a refreshing drink to cool down in the mid-day sun.
The Platja de Fenals

Also known as Fenals Beach, this one is situated next to the main Central Beach in the heart of the resort. If after you've arrived from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar you find that the Central Beach is a bit full, head to this much quieter beach just along the way. There are still lifeguards on duty, and the array of bars and restaurants is still great, but it has the added benefit of feeling like a hidden gem with its backing of trees and outcrops of cliffs; it feels like a very different beach from the main one. You can also enjoy the many of the same water sports as on the Central Beach and the rocky coves near the ends of the beach are especially good for snorkelling and diving.

The Smaller Beaches

If you are the type that wants to explore the nitty gritty of the area and get away from the hustle and bustle that can come with being in a resort, then heading to one of the smaller beaches is good option. The Platja de Santa Cristina is three and a half kilometres away from the heart of the town in a sheltered bay with surrounding woodlands. The sand here is very fine, and there is a lovely chapel well worth taking a walk to discover. If you are feeling more adventurous, you may want to pay a visit to Boadella Beach, the areas local nudist beach. In recent years, however, the area has been more populated by families and is becoming more family friendly.

These are just a few of the attractions awaiting you once you arrive on your transfer service from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar. There are plenty more and you will be able to compile your own list of favourites for your next holiday.

The inside story of Lenovo's ThinkPad redesign

The inside story of Lenovo's ThinkPad redesign

"When you talk to end users about ports, they'll tell you how much they need them. They'll talk about the vast number of USB devices that they have. It's easy to hear that and determine that you need five or more ports based on what these people report. When you watch these people work, however, and you're more overt in your methods -- you rarely see that happening.

Sometimes, there's a conflict between what someone reports they need and what they require."

So begins the backstory of the latest ThinkPad overhaul as told by Corinna Proctor, the senior research manager at Lenovo's User Research Center. Clearly versed in the art of separating whimsical wishes from bona fide requirements, she spoke to me in a phone interview alongside two of her colleagues in the run-up to today's unveiling of the redesigned ThinkPad T431s Ultrabook. The machine itself is still very much a ThinkPad -- it's black, it's understated and it's tough as nails -- but those who appreciate the evolution of technology will no doubt recognize some changes. Changes that began as mere notions some 18 months ago.

(AP) ? Rafael Nadal continued his successful comeback with his third title in four tournaments, and Maria Sharapova broke through, too.

Nadal rallied to beat Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and win the BNP Paribas Open after Sharapova claimed her first title of the year, 6-2, 6-2 over Caroline Wozniacki in the women's final on Sunday.

Nadal improved to a career-best 17-1 on the year, including 14 straight match wins since returning in early February after a seven-month layoff because of a left knee injury.

He's won three titles ? two on clay while runner-up in another on his favorite surface ? and now his first on hard courts since Tokyo in October 2010. He had lost six previous finals on the surface.

"That's makes emotional week for me," he said. "Very important victory for me, winning against the best players of the world on a surface that is good for them."

Sharapova, runner-up here last year, won her first Indian Wells title since 2006. She and Nadal each earned $1 million.

"It's nice to hold up that trophy after so many years," she said.

The victories moved up both players in this week's rankings. Nadal is No. 4 and Sharapova is No. 2 behind Serena Williams.

"Number 1 is a great number," Sharapova said. "But I think at this point in my career, titles and Grand Slams are just a bigger priority."

Nadal won his 600th career match and broke a tie with Roger Federer for most career ATP Tour Masters 1000 titles with his 22nd.

Nadal defeated Federer in straight sets in the quarterfinals, then took out Tomas Berdych in two sets in the semis. Against Del Potro, Nadal rolled to an early lead in a match that was marked by several momentum swings.

Nadal served three love games in the third set, capping his last one with a 123-mph ace that gave him a 5-3 lead.

Del Potro came from love-40 down and fought off three match points to hold at 5-4. But Nadal served out the match, dropping just one point in the final game of the 2?-hour match in the desert heat.

"I try to put the match in a little bit slower rhythm and waited for the right moments to go for the point and worked well," he said. "Del Potro is a fantastic player, so it's not easy to change the dynamic of the match like this."

Del Potro saved three break points to lead 1-0 in the third. Nadal held at love, taking three games in a row for a 3-1 lead that he never gave up.

After falling behind 3-0, Del Potro won eight of the next nine games to claim the opening set and take a 2-0 lead in the second.

"I was wrong in strategy for moments, something that for me is not usual, because normally I can have mistakes with the shots," Nadal said, "but with the tactics and how I have to manage the points, how I have to play the points, normally I am right."

Del Potro went up 3-1 before Nadal won the final five games and the set 6-3 on a 105-mph ace that capped a love service game.

After Nadal picked himself up, he hugged Del Potro, then trotted behind the baseline to clasp hands with billionaire tournament owner Larry Ellison of Oracle Corp. before falling to his knees near the net and raising his arms in celebration. Nadal playfully took a bite out of the Baccarat crystal trophy.

Del Potro came up short in his bid to beat three Top-10 players in the same tournament for the second time in his career. He defeated No. 3 Andy Murray and No. 1 Novak Djokovic in three sets apiece in becoming the second Argentine since Guillermo Villas in 1977 to reach the final here.

Sharapova dictated from the opening game, when she broke Wozniacki at love with groundstrokes that had the Dane running from side to side. Sharapova faced just two break points on her serve in the nearly 1?-hour match.

"I always felt like I was always a foot ahead, especially with the breaks," she said. "I was able to serve well today, and that helped me."

The victory gave Sharapova at least one title for 11 straight years dating to 2003.

NYC-bound Greyhound bus infested with roaches

By Pei-Sze Cheng, NBCNewYork.com

NEW YORK CITY -- A Greyhound bus bound for New York City had to pull over and evacuate Friday because it was infested with roaches that dropped from the ceiling and skittered across seats and the floor, terrorizing riders.

Mothers tried to shield their children and riders jumped into the aisle of the bus as roaches bolted out of cracks and crevices, seemingly all at once, about 15 minutes after the 10 a.m. ET bus left Atlantic City, passengers told NBC 4 New York.

"All of a sudden the roaches came out of nowhere, they were on the floor, they were falling from the ceiling," said Andy Rodriguez, a passenger.

Tracy Harmon told NBC 4 New York that "people were shrieking and shaking roaches off."

"It was terrible," she said.

The bus was carrying 48 people and an unknown number of roaches, according to Greyhound.

"Once the driver became aware of the situation, the driver followed procedures by pulling the bus over to a safe location and notifying our dispatch office," Greyhound spokesman Timothy Stokes said.

A second bus was sent to pick up the passengers, and they later arrived at Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Greyhound said the company apologizes and has refunded the trip for all the passengers.

Boeing, Poland's LOT airline in talks over 787s

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Poland's state-owned airline, LOT, was holding talks with Boeing on Friday over the grounding of the 787 jets, with the government pushing for compensation.

The government says LOT is losing $50,000 a day as a result of the grounding of its two 787s, and will pressure Boeing to take financial responsibility.

The world's entire fleet of 787s, 50 in all, has been grounded by U.S. and other aviation authorities since Jan. 16 due to problems with lithium ion batteries. About half of the fleet belongs to Japanese carriers All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines.

LOT, which is deeply indebted, was Europe's first airline to have the 787s Dreamliners and their grounding has added to the carrier's financial problems. Last month the management announced it would keep the jets grounded through October.

LOT spokesman Marek Klucinski said Friday that LOT was in one-day talks with Boeing in Warsaw about "cooperation with our partner" but refused to provide any detail.

Deputy Treasury Minister Rafal Baniak said he was looking forward to "a positive outcome from LOT's dialogue with Boeing, chiefly concerning the return of B 787 planes to flight operations."

Boeing officials said Friday in Japan that they could see commercial flights of the grounded 787 jets resuming "within weeks" even though the cause of battery overheating has not been pinpointed.

LOT has one Dreamliner grounded in Warsaw, one in Chicago.

Charm offensive produces no breakthroughs

(AP) ? Over dinner at a swank hotel a few blocks from the White House, Republican senators wanted to know if President Barack Obama would support a gradual increase in the age of eligibility for Medicare, set at 65 since the program's inception more than four decades ago.

The president hedged, according to several at the event, recalling the discussion on a cost-saving change to Medicare that most if not all leading Democrats in Congress adamantly oppose. One later recalled that Obama "drew no bright line" in opposition, but the lawmaker came away believing that the president "would be very resistant" even if it might unlock a long-sought deal to reduce deficits and an ever-growing federal debt.

That lawmaker and some of the others describing what occurred in the meetings spoke on condition of anonymity, noting that the sessions were supposed to be private discussions.

The politically fraught moment came at the outset of Obama's widely publicized recent string of meetings with rank-and-file lawmakers. The unusual commitment of presidential time netted public praise from his most implacable critics and was supplemented by numerous conversations among lawmakers and senior White House aides.

No breakthroughs were anticipated and none emerged, and for all the warm talk, House Speaker John Boehner delivered a tart summation.

"Republicans want to balance the budget. The president doesn't. Republicans want to solve our long-term debt problem. The president doesn't," he said, while adding it was incumbent on all sides to seek common ground.

Across the hours, there were moments of levity ? and an expression of gratitude to Arizona Sen. John McCain for his service to the nation on the 40th anniversary of his release from a prisoner of war camp in Vietnam.

Evidently the food was pretty good, too.

One presidential aide left a meeting with the Senate Republican rank and file toting a carry-out bag from lunch that featured lobster salad and blueberry pie with ice cream.

"Ultimately it's a matter of the House and the Senate ... getting together and being willing to compromise," the president said as he departed the Capitol on Thursday.

Even on that point, Republicans disagree.

Over and over, they told Obama, he must lead, tone down the attacks on them and lean on Democrats to accept concessions in benefit programs.

Over and over, he told Republicans that if he is to make concessions on Medicare and elsewhere, they would have to agree to higher taxes.

On that, there was little if any give, particularly with Republicans noting that Obama's approval ratings have recently begun receding for the first time since his re-election.

At the dinner at the Jefferson Hotel more than 10 days ago, Republican senators noted that some of the changes under discussion for Medicare would raise costs for wealthier seniors and also that higher revenues might result from what one called "pro-growth tax reform."

But there was no support for raising taxes, recalled one participant at the dinner. Several said the resolve stemmed from last winter's agreement to raise tax rates in legislation that contained only skimpy spending cuts.

By the time of his final meeting Thursday, Obama told House Democrats that, for now at least, they needn't worry about having to make concessions like slowing the growth of cost-of-living benefits under Social Security and other programs. Republicans, he said, weren't willing to contemplate enough additional tax revenue to warrant the trade-off.

Policy differences aside, there was an undercurrent of mistrust if not long-nursed grievances among Republicans, many of whom were getting their first look up-close look at the Democrat in the White House.

Rep. James Lankford of Oklahoma told the president he had heard that his first call on election night last November had been to the leader of the Democrats' 2014 campaign committee, rather than to Boehner, the Republican speaker.

Not so, Obama replied, saying he had indeed called Boehner first, but he was asleep. "Yeah, it was an early night for us," called out one lawmaker, drawing laughs from a group that lost eight seats in November.

Later in the same meeting, Rep. Tom Price of Georgia referred to a lack of trust between the two sides. According to participants in the meeting, he chalked up Obama's delay in presenting a budget this spring to politics.

The president replied that if he were solely interested in politics he would be running a "Mediscare" campaign rather than holding meetings with Republicans.

Across the Capitol, Sen. John Thune of South Dakota singled out an interview in which he said the president accused Republicans of wanting to eviscerate Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

"Nobody here believes those programs ought to be gutted," Thune told Obama, the senator later recalled. Instead, he told the president that Republicans want to preserve the programs for the future.

The president stood his ground, saying the Republican plan to turn Medicaid and food stamps into all-purpose grants to the states would inevitably lead to deep cuts in services for the needy.

By all accounts, Medicare, which provides health care to millions of seniors, is the key to any deficit-reduction compromise.

In his budget a year ago, Obama proposed saving $305 billion over a decade from the program, although little of that derives from the sort of changes Republicans say are essential to slow the growth in health care costs.

Roughly half would come from drug companies that sell medicine to low-income Medicare beneficiaries. A $63 billion savings would come from changes in payment rules for post-hospital care facilities; $36 billion from lowering the amount of bad debt the government would cover for providers.

An additional $28 billion would come from raising premiums for wealthier seniors beginning in 2017.

Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, noted that the president had said repeatedly last winter that Congress should pass tax items they agreed on and leave others for later.

Seeking to turn the tables, he asked Obama why the White House wouldn't now agree to pass legislation to slow the growth of cost-of-living increases in Social Security and other benefit programs and increase Medicare fees for wealthier seniors, steps Obama has backed in the past.

Obama replied that Republicans would have to agree to higher taxes first, according to several lawmakers present.

Even then, it was clear when he met with Senate Democrats that Obama he would face resistance from his allies in Congress.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, an independent who sides with Democrats, said he and Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa spoke out strongly against changes in calculating cost-of-living increases.

"It would make major cuts in Social Security benefits ... and also very significant cuts for disabled veterans," Sanders said in a telephone interview.

"I do not believe that the American people want to balance the budget on the backs of disabled veterans or widows who lost their husbands in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan."

What are the top things that companies should know about maximizing their online presence?

?Most companies set out to build their web presence and pay little attention to how people are going to find their website and instead focus on creating the coolest looking website. Business owners should know that there are certain criteria that search engines need to meet for a website to succeed. ?Often inexperienced business owners make poor decisions by choosing flash-based websites or graphic heavy sites which cannot be read by Google or other search bots. Every company should make sure that their site developer creates a balance when it comes down to cool sites and getting mass volume to your site. If maximizing the online presence means increasing its reach and visibility businesses need to make sure that their design elements are tightly monitored in correlation with Googles best practices for maximum success.?
