Beach volleyball star Zara Dampney paid tribute to the vocal home crowd at Horse Guard?s Parade after Team GB got off to a dream start to their Olympics. Zara Dampney (left) said the pair were boosted by the fervent British crowd (Picture: PA) Dampney and partner Shauna Mullin beat Canada?s Marie-Andree Lessard and Annie Martin in three sets 17-21, 21-14, 15-13. ?Obviously to win our first Olympic game, our first Olympics is a big thing, to bring home a win for GB was amazing. The crowd kept us going, lived every point with us,? Dampney enthused. Mullin recently admitted that, amongst the bikinis and the carnival atmosphere, fans sometimes forget that beach volleyball is a sport. But yesterday?s performance will force people to take the pair ? and the event ? seriously as they take on world No.6 Italy tomorrow. Brazilian pair Juliana Felisberta and Larissa Franca are favourites to win the tournament but defending champions USA are also looking on form as they beat Argentina in straight sets in their opener.
