8 Most Popular Home Projects During the Winter Months | DIY ...

When it gets cold outside and you have to put away your?lawnmower, rakes and shovels, if you are a person that loves a project, how about you move the projects indoors?!

There are many home improvement projects that are perfectly suited for cold weather and some items that just need to be taken care of before it gets too cold.

In this DIY Reviews guide, we have put together a list of projects that you might consider this winter and a few that we suggest you complete to make sure your family stays safe and healthy for the winter months.

Chimney Cleaning

The cold weather has arrived and if you frequently use your fireplace to heat your home, or even for the occasional weekend fire, you should have your chimney cleaned and inspected. The estimated number of households that use fireplaces as the primary means of heating their home is around 33% and with our economic climate, those numbers are on track to climb. Without regular cleaning and maintenance, creosote can block the airflow in your chimney which could cause a major fire. Not to mention, harmful smoke can fill your house if your chimney is clogged, causing harmful effects on the health of you and your family.?Since October is Fire Prevention Month, we want to take the proper precautions to stay safe.

Plan to have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional before seasonal use. These inspections should included interior & exterior inspection and cleaning, as well as a list of any items that need to be repaired. For an idea of items that may need to be repaired and the cost associated, check out the Chimney Repair Cost Guide for helpful information. ?If you have gas logs in your home, you still need to have these inspections completed before you fire it up for the first time!

Roof Repair

A leaky roof can ruin the holidays! That is why you should keep on top of roof repairs before they become big problem. Some DIY?ers don?t have a problem going up on the roof to blow leaves out of the gutters and inspecting the roof for problems, but personally, I won?t go on the roof! It is, however, something I will pay for a professional to do because it is that important. A leak in your roof can not only ruin a room in your home, but if kept unchecked, can cause a collapse. Before you decide to call a professional, hop over to our article, Common Roof Repairs & The Estimate Cost to Fix Them! so you know what to expect in case repairs are needed.

Pipe Wrapping & Insulation

Insulating your pipes will only help you save on energy bills by preventing heat loss, but it will also keep pipes from freezing during a severe cold snap. Pipe insulation is a simple DIY home improvement project that can be performed in a couple of hours; as long as you have the right materials. The DIY Network has a fantastic tutorial that can step you through the process and help you save money!

Furnace Inspection and Tune-Up

Unfortunately, its a fact of life ? furnaces always seem to go out during the coldest week of the year! Ideally, you will stay one step ahead by making sure your HVAC system is inspected twice a year ? spring and fall. This is not usually a DIY project because HVAC contractors have specialized tools and skills to make sure your inspection and cleaning is thorough and safe. Your inspection should include indoor and outdoor equipment, so make sure whomever you call out to do the work has a checklist and shows you everything they have completed.

There are, however, a few items for those that are particularly handy that can be done?in-between?inspections. We go into more detail on our HVAC System Maintenance Checklist and suggest you give it a read and perform those items you feel comfortable with.

Indoor Painting

Cool weather is the best time to spruce up the inside of your home and touch up or repaint some of those walls that are looking outdated. During the summer, it doesn?t matter if you open the windows to air out a new paint job, it still feels stagnant. With cooler weather, you can crack the windows to let the fumes air out a bit and let some of the crisp, clean air in. Indoor painting is one of the least expensive home improvement projects and a way to add value to your home. In addition, it is a perfect DIY project.

Carpet or Flooring Replacement

Much like indoor painting, cool weather is the best time to change your carpet or rip it up and install hardwood floors throughout. For one thing, most people choose to install new carpeting during the summer because professionals will tell you that especially for hardwoods, spring or summer is the best time ? making this the most expensive time to buy new flooring. Though opinions differ on when you should install flooring, as long as the room is at a temperature between 66 ? 72 degrees, you should be fine. So, why not buy when its cheap?

You can save some money by buying the flooring yourself, then hiring a contractor to install it. Before you go out and start buying, consider taking a look at our article on how to estimate hardwood floor installation; this way, you won?t make mistakes when you purchase and need to go buy more.

Weatherizing Doors & Windows

The biggest heat loss in most homes is poorly insulated windows and doors, and this is an easy project for any homeowner. ?To put into perspective just how much heat loss can occur, Build It Solar has a handy heat loss calculator that will provide an estimate of heat loss for your home.?Before it gets too cold, spend an afternoon applying new weatherstripping around your doors, and window frames. There are many types of weatherstripping on the market and each provide a different purpose. To get more information on the different types of weatherstripping and their uses, check out our article,?Weatherstripping , The Different Types of Weatherstripping, where we provide helpful information that can help with your project.

Seal Cracks and Holes

Other areas where heat can seep out of your home are around your chimney, attic access doors and around basement doors and windows.

To seal attic access doors;?First apply foam weatherstripping so the door closes tightly. If the gap is wider than the foam tape, you can use 2 layers if needed. You can also further insulate the door by applying a layer of insulation ? (on the attic side).

For insulating basement doors and windows: First, caulk around windows and weatherstrip basement doors. Cover any unused windows with plastic on the side or you might also consider applying a decorative window tinting if you want them to look a little better.

31 Days of Savoring Home: Day 30 Texas charm! | Seasons Worth ...

Yesterday we heard from Seth?s sister, Claire! Today we get to hear from another sister, my sister-in-law Tina in Ft Worth, Texas!? Here is what Tina had to say about her home?

Home for us is cozy space to nap with our pups, watch a football game, have friends and family over, and just a place to relax and be ourselves! Our home was built in 1942 and has lots of charm. It?s not perfect, pretty quirky actually, but it?s cozy and inviting (sounds a lot like family, right?).? I would not trade it for any ?cookie cutter? home right now; I mean, where would all of my great Canton finds go?!

Everyone loves our red front door and I can?t lie, it?s pretty darn cute and what initially sparked my interest in the house! The bench out front is an antique from a little store in Kiowa, OK where my grandparents live. I think it adds a great pop of color against the grey!

The living room is cozy and usually hosts Aggie football, or a good round of Dance Central where my nephews learned all the greatest dance moves ;)

The entry way table is about 100 years old. It was at my great- grandparent house and fits the space perfectly. I love to mix new pieces with antiques; I think it adds great personality to the space!

The built in cabinets are original to the home. I spruced them up with a fresh coat of paint and some new hardware. My crafty mom was kind enough to make a window seat cushion to complete the space!

Things I love about the bedroom: new hardwoods (holla!), Canton door as headboard ($30 steal), and my antique dressing table!

We recently added a new vanity and tile to our master bath. I love it!

Last but not least, the kitchen. We had the cabinets resurfaced, added quartz countertops, tile/glass back splash, and new appliances.

Notice the quote ?If you met my family you would understand.? My mom got that little sign for me and it?s actually perfect.? I think that explains a lot about our home and how loving or crazy it can be at times. Thanks for letting me share, Kristen!

Thanks, Tina!?? As I read this and look at pictures of your home that we have had so much fun in I am reminded of the quote in your parents lakehouse??Home is where you treat family like friends and friends like family?!

Hitachi wins bid to build up to six UK nuclear plants

LONDON (Reuters) - Hitachi on Tuesday won a bid to take over a company building up to six nuclear power plants in Britain, reviving hopes for investment in the UK's ageing energy infrastructure but leaving doubts they will come online in time.

Hitachi said it expected to have the first 1,300 megawatt (MW) nuclear power plant in the UK operational by the mid-2020s.

"This is a decades-long, multi-billion pound vote of confidence in the UK that will contribute vital new infrastructure to power our economy," Prime Minister David Cameron said in a statement.

The British government said that Horizon would eventually include up to six nuclear power plants, which would be able to provide 14 million homes with electricity for 60 years.

Hitachi is taking over the project from German utilities E.ON and RWE for 696 million pounds and said it was already in discussions to find another company to operate the plants after they are built.

Analysts said the Japanese company could struggle to build the facilities in time to fill a looming power supply gap in Britain.

"The deal is certainly a positive development for UK electricity supplies given the concerns in the wake of RWE and E.ON pulling out, (but) if you are looking at a three-to-four year turnaround in the approvals process, that will inevitably fuel concerns over the UK's supply-demand balance in the latter part of this decade," Craig Lowrey, consultant at UX Energy Services, said.

Before construction can start, the Japanese company's Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) design will need to be approved by Britain's nuclear regulator, a process that Hitachi said would take three to four years.

Hitachi has a track record of delivering projects on time and on budget, UK Energy and Climate Change Secretary Edward Davey said.

LOOMING SUPPLY GAP

Britain's power generation infrastructure is ageing and in need of modernisation to meet future demand and carbon reduction targets.

"By 2023, Britain will have shut down all but one of its existing nuclear power plants, which means up to 18 percent of current energy supply will disappear," Omar Abbosh of managing consultants Accenture said.

Hitachi said it had signed memorandums of understanding with British companies Babcock International and Rolls-Royce to help deliver the Horizon projects and would create 5,000-6,000 jobs in Britain during construction.

The Japanese company beat a rival bid from Toshiba, which owns U.S.-based nuclear reactor designer Westinghouse. Westinghouse declined to comment on the outcome.

"It was the money in the end. Westinghouse offered about the same, a touch less," said one source close to the negotiations.

The deal is expected to officially close at the end of November.

JAPAN IN, GERMANY OUT

Hitachi has developed a different corporate strategy from that of E.ON and RWE to cope with the nuclear exit policies of their respective governments.

Following the nuclear accident at Japan's Fukushima reactors in the aftermath of a massive earthquake in March 2011, both Japan and Germany announced long-term plans to exit nuclear power generation, leaving companies with a choice of searching for new markets or closing their nuclear businesses.

Germany's E.ON and RWE decided to exit the nuclear sector.

"The sale (of Horizon) is in line with E.ON's revised strategy," E.ON said in a statement. RWE said it now has no further national or international new-build projects under way in the nuclear energy sector.

Hitachi, by contrast, has begun to seek overseas opportunities to sell their nuclear technology to, including Britain, Central Europe and the Middle East.

WA Fathers Rights and Non-Custodial Shared Parenting ? Fathers ...

WA Fathers RightsFor those concerned about WA Fathers Rights and equal parentage and access to children by Non-Custodial Mothers, as well as the ability for extended family members in the Non-Custodial family to have an equal impact on kid?s lives, we want you to know that Fathers and Families is working daily to educate and build an organization of ALL Washington State Non-Custodial Families and Parents that help State Legislators and Judges educate themselves on the importance of equally shared parenting. If you are a WA Non-Custodial Father or Mother, we think you already know the difficulties that exist in the family courts that marginalize you to that of a support provider that is kept at a distance rather than an equal parent.? Additionally, in addition to WA Non-Custodial Fathers and Mothers, our organization believes that those in our extended families get equally hurt in this system, and that they are equally important as the custodial family system.

Fathers and Families understands that the majority of Non-Custodial parents are Fathers, and it is easy to think about this as a WA Fathers Rights issue, but we like to think of this issue from the rights of the child to have love, support, and guidance from BOTH parents without government or court interference. For far too long, many ?Women?s Rights? groups have attempted to frame this as an issue as one that only affects women, and we feel that they have lost sight on what is really important, which is the children. Furthermore, we want to make it painfully obvious that many WOMEN in non-custodial paternal families get just as devastated in this process. Therefore, in this article, and from the standpoint of Fathers and Families, we substitute the phrase ?WA Fathers Rights? for the right of children to have equal parents that share parentage.

Additionally, if the advancement of ?Women?s Rights? has come at the expense of the Washington State Father, then we think that talking about the Rights of WA Fathers will have the same effect on Non-Custodial Mothers. If the divisive system is bad for Fathers, then it is equally bad for Mothers who are kept from their children by Judges and bad laws.

Factors influencing Non-Custodial WA Fathers Rights, Non-Custodial Mothers, and the ability for children to have two equal parents.

  • Child Support Enforcement ? While most Washington State residents think that child support enforcement is simply a federal program that ONLY has the duty to support children, there is a another side to this program that is generating money for WA State Welfare and Low Income Assistance Programs. Our organization believes this relationship NEEDS a marginalized parent to support children from afar via the federal government so that programs like TANF and WIC can continue to receive federal and state funding.
  • Well established ?Women?s Rights? groups that flourished in the 1960s and 70s, and who have tens of thousands of supporters that have the ear of Washington State Judges and Legislators. Typically, these groups oppose any type of ?Fathers Rights? or Equally Shared Parenting. This is why Fathers and Families thinks that it is important that WOMEN in non-custodial families stand up to the notion that this only hurts women when they lose custody.
  • The WA State Family Courts have become an industry where many people profit when two parents are fighting for 18 years. Clearly, WA State Family Law Attorneys benefit from this by charging excessive retainers many times a year for 18 years and therefore have an incentive for conflict.
  • If you are a WA Father who is concerned about his right to have equal parentage and access to his children (or a Non-Custodial Mother), then you have likely heard a lot of Judges and Politicians talk about purposeful absent fathers. But what about the large numbers of Fathers who are forced into absence by Judges who only give 4 days a month visitation, or who allow custodial parents to move hundreds of miles away?
  • As non-custodial step-parent, grandmother, or aunt, are you tired of watching the Non-Custodial Father or Mother go to jail when they have a hard time financially, while WA State Social Services programs provide expanding housing, educational, medical, food, and financial assistance to custodial parents make the same financial ends meet?
  • As a Washington State Non-Custodial Father or Mother concerned about your rights in the family courts, have you ever wondered why the federal government provides the custodial parent with a free attorney to resolve child support issues while you are forced into bankruptcy in hiring a private attorney EACH time enforcement wants more money?

Clearly there is a lot of work to be done in Washington State when its comes to Fathers Rights and the Rights of Non-Custodial parents to have equal parentage and access to their children.

Fathers and Families

Fathers and Families believes that far greater resources, opportunities, emotional support, psychological support, financial support, and physical support for children is realized when both parents (and extended families) have equal access and parentage of their children, and that these are things that federal child support enforcement or social services agency can never deliver.
Fathers and Families believes that using WA non-custodial Fathers and Mothers child support efforts as a means to generate federal money for Welfare programs is misguided.

Fathers and Families has concerns that as more and more Welfare applications are received at WA Social Services Agencies and across the US, there will be even more aggressive child support enforcement tactics used in the future that is designed to secure federal money from Title IV-D legislation to pay for these programs. And given the level of immunity that social services agencies have, we believe that a very wide open door exists for abuse and bias on non-custodial Fathers, Mothers, and children.

In an effort to help Fathers and Families educate WA Legislators, Judges, and other groups, we hope that you will join our organization, as well as getting involved with others across this great nation using our social media sites like Facebook where you will have the opportunity to collaborate with us and others who are also in the child support enforcement system. Additionally, we ask that you extensively share this article with others via email and other social networking sites to help bring about greater awareness of the new WA Fathers Rights and Non-Custodial movement called equally shared parenting.

(AP) ? The most devastating storm in decades to hit the country's most densely populated region upended man and nature as it rolled back the clock on 21st-century lives, cutting off modern communication and leaving millions without power Tuesday as thousands who fled their water-menaced homes wondered when ? if ? life would return to normal.

A weakening Sandy, the hurricane turned fearsome superstorm, killed at least 50 people, many hit by falling trees, and still wasn't finished. It inched inland across Pennsylvania, ready to bank toward western New York to dump more of its water and likely cause more havoc Tuesday night.? Behind it: a dazed, inundated New York City, a waterlogged Atlantic Coast and a moonscape of disarray and debris ? from unmoored shore-town boardwalks to submerged mass-transit systems to delicate presidential politics.

"Nature," said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, assessing the damage to his city, "is an awful lot more powerful than we are."

More than 8.2 million households were without power in 17 states as far west as Michigan. Nearly 2 million of those were in New York, where large swaths of lower Manhattan lost electricity and entire streets ended up underwater ? as did seven subway tunnels between Manhattan and Brooklyn at one point, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.

The New York Stock Exchange was closed for a second day from weather, the first time that has happened since a blizzard in 1888. The shutdown of mass transit crippled a city where more than 8.3 million bus, subway and local rail trips are taken each day, and 800,000 vehicles cross bridges run by the transit agency.

Consolidated Edison said electricity in and around New York could take a week to restore.

"Everybody knew it was coming. Unfortunately, it was everything they said it was," said Sal Novello, a construction executive who rode out the storm with his wife, Lori, in the Long Island town of Lindenhurst, and ended up with 7 feet of water in the basement.

The scope of the storm's damage wasn't known yet. Though early predictions of river flooding in Sandy's inland path were petering out,?colder temperatures made snow the main product of Sandy's slow march from the sea. Parts of the West Virginia mountains were blanketed with 2 feet of snow by Tuesday afternoon, and drifts 4 feet deep were reported at Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Tennessee-North Carolina border.

With Election Day a week away, the storm also threatened to affect the presidential campaign. Federal disaster response, always a dicey political issue, has become even thornier since government mismanagement of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. And poll access and voter turnout, both of which hinge upon how people are impacted by the storm, could help shift the outcome in an extremely close race.

As organized civilization came roaring back Tuesday in the form of emergency response, recharged cellphones and the reassurance of daylight, harrowing stories and pastiches emerged from Maryland north to Rhode Island in the hours after Sandy's howling winds and tidal surges shoved water over seaside barriers, into low-lying streets and up from coastal storm drains.

Images from around the storm-affected areas depicted scenes reminiscent of big-budget disaster movies. In Atlantic City, N.J., a gaping hole remained where once a stretch of boardwalk sat by the sea. In Queens, N.Y., rubble from a fire that destroyed as many as 100 houses in an evacuated beachfront neighborhood jutted into the air at ugly angles against a gray sky. In heavily flooded Hoboken, N.J., across the Hudson River from Manhattan, dozens of yellow cabs sat parked in rows, submerged in murky water to their windshields. At the ground zero construction site in lower Manhattan, seawater rushed into a gaping hole under harsh floodlights.

One of the most dramatic tales came from lower Manhattan, where a failed backup generator forced New York University's Langone Medical Center to relocate more than 200 patients, including 20 babies from neonatal intensive care. Dozens of ambulances lined up in the rainy night and the tiny patients were gingerly moved out, some attached to battery-powered respirators as gusts of wind blew their blankets.

In Moonachie, N.J., 10 miles north of Manhattan, water rose to 5 feet within 45 minutes and trapped residents who thought the worst of the storm had passed. Mobile-home park resident Juan Allen said water overflowed a 2-foot wall along a nearby creek, filling the area with 2 to 3 feet of water within 15 minutes. "I saw trees not just knocked down but ripped right out of the ground," he said. "I watched a tree crush a guy's house like a wet sponge."

In a measure of its massive size, waves on southern Lake Michigan rose to a record-tying 20.3 feet. High winds spinning off Sandy's edges clobbered the Cleveland area early Tuesday, uprooting trees, closing schools and flooding major roads along Lake Erie.

Most along the East Coast, though, grappled with an experience like Bertha Weismann of Bridgeport, Conn.? frightening, inconvenient and financially problematic but, overall, endurable. Her garage was flooded and she lost power, but she was grateful. "I feel like we are blessed," she said. "It could have been worse."

The presidential candidates' campaign maneuverings Tuesday revealed the delicacy of the need to look presidential in a crisis without appearing to capitalize on a disaster. President Barack Obama canceled a third straight day of campaigning, scratching events scheduled for Wednesday in swing-state Ohio, in Sandy's path. Republican Mitt Romney resumed his campaign with plans for an Ohio rally billed as a "storm relief event."

And the weather posed challenges a week out for how to get everyone out to vote. On the hard-hit New Jersey coastline, a county elections chief said some polling places on barrier islands will be unusable and have to be moved.

"This is the biggest challenge we've ever had," said George R. Gilmore, chairman of the Ocean County Board of Elections.

By Tuesday afternoon, there were still only hints of the economic impact of the storm. Airports remained closed across the East Coast and far beyond as tens of thousands of travelers found they couldn't get where they were going.

Forecasting firm IHS Global Insight predicted the storm will end up causing about $20 billion in damages and $10 billion to $30 billion in lost business. Another firm, AIR Worldwide, estimated losses up to $15 billion ? big numbers probably offset by reconstruction and repairs that will contribute to longer-term growth.

"The biggest problem is not the first few days but the coming months," said Alan Rubin, an expert in nature disaster recovery.

Sandy began in the Atlantic and knocked around the Caribbean ? killing nearly 70 people ? and strengthened into a hurricane as it chugged across the southeastern coast of the United States. By Tuesday night it had ebbed in strength but was joining up with another, more wintry storm ? an expected confluence of weather systems that earned it nicknames like "superstorm" and, on Halloween eve, "Frankenstorm."

It became, pretty much everyone agreed Tuesday, the weather event of a lifetime ? and one shared vigorously on social media by people in Sandy's path who took eye-popping photographs as the storm blew through, then shared them with the world by the blue light of their smartphones.

On Twitter , Facebook and the photo-sharing service Instagram, people tried to connect, reassure relatives and make sense of what was happening ? and, in many cases, work to authenticate reports of destruction and storm surges. They posted and passed around images and real-time updates at a dizzying rate, wishing each other well and gaping, virtually, at scenes of calamity moments after they unfolded. Among the top terms on Facebook through the night and well into Tuesday, according to the social network: "we are OK," ''made it" and "fine."

By Tuesday evening, the remnants of Sandy were about 50 northeast of Pittsburgh, pushing westward with winds of 45 mph. It was expected to turn toward New York State and Canada during the night.

Although weakening as it goes, the storm will continue to bring heavy rain and flooding, said Daniel Brown of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Atlantic City's fabled Boardwalk, the first in the nation, lost several blocks when Sandy came through, though the majority of it remained intact even as other Jersey Shore boardwalks were dismantled. What damage could be seen on the coastline Tuesday was, in some locations, staggering ? "unthinkable," New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said of what unfolded along the Jersey Shore, where houses were swept from their foundations and amusement park rides were washed into the ocean. "Beyond anything I thought I would ever see."

Resident Carol Mason returned to her bayfront home to carpets that squished as she stepped on them. She made her final mortgage payment just last week. Facing a mandatory evacuation order, she had tried to ride out the storm at first but then saw the waters rising outside her bathroom window and quickly reconsidered.

"I looked at the bay and saw the fury in it," she said. "I knew it was time to go."

South Dakota to execute man for 1990 murder of nine-year-old girl

(Reuters) - A man convicted of raping and murdering a 9-year-old girl after kidnapping her from a convenience store in 1990 is scheduled to die by lethal injection on Tuesday night in South Dakota, the state's second execution this month.

Donald Moeller, 60, who had declared his innocence and fought for two decades to prevent his execution, admitted during a court hearing in early October that he had committed the crime and stopped appeals that would further delay his death sentence from being carried out.

His execution is scheduled for 10 p.m. Central Time on Tuesday at the state prison in Sioux Falls.

According to court records, Moeller abducted Becky O'Connell from a Sioux Falls convenience store where she had gone to buy candy and repeatedly raped and stabbed her. Her body was found in a wooded area the next morning with extensive knife wounds.

Moeller was convicted of rape and murder and sentenced to death in 1992, but was granted a new trial after the state Supreme Court ruled that testimony of previous attempted sexual assaults on three other people should not have been permitted.

Moeller was convicted and sentenced to death again in 1997. He continued appeals until recent weeks but at a federal court hearing in early October he admitted the crimes.

"If the rape and murder of Rebecca O'Connell does not deserve the death penalty, then I guess nothing does," Moeller told the judge, according to court records.

Executions have been rare in South Dakota. Before this year, the state had put to death only two inmates since 1913. On Oct 15, it executed Eric Robert on October 15 for the killing of prison guard Ron Johnson during a failed escape attempt.

If Moeller's lethal injection is carried out on Tuesday, he will be the 34th inmate executed in the United States in 2012, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

What's Important in the Financial World (10/29/2012) - 24/7 Wall St.

Sandy?s Impact

The effects of Hurricane Sandy already have been felt on Wall St. as the major exchanges have elected to close today, and perhaps tomorrow. Much less certain is the damage the storm may do to the overall economy. The effects likely will be mixed. Traffic to stores, restaurants and other some other retail outlets will be down. A notable exception will be stores that carry items people buy for hurricane emergencies. Food stores and hardware retailers will see a very large improvement in foot traffic. Among other big industries that could be hurt are the travel and leisure sectors. In the case of airlines, will people cancel trips or merely defer them? The overall price of gas and oil will rise because of refinery shut downs and slow transportation of gas, but those effects probably will last?only a few days. The industry that will be most badly battered is insurance. Claims certainly could rise into the billions of dollars. As for the balance of the economy in the region; it probably will recover quickly.

European Uncertainty

Europe?s economic problems will be pushed off of the front pages, at least while the East Coast braces for Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath. But the bailout of Greece is in real trouble. The coalition that runs Greece has begun to fall apart. Not all members agree to the nature of cuts in jobs and worker pay. And the International Monetary Fund and European Union have insisted on austerity measures that will make deep cuts necessary. The standoff could cost Greece its next aid payment and raises, for the umpteenth time, the possibility of default. The bailout of Spain also has been rocked by disagreements about its size and the extent to which the nation will agree to enforcement of its budget by its neighbors. Efforts to get Spain to accept a massive aid package have gone nowhere in the past few days. According to Reuters:

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti meets Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Monday and while little is expected from the meeting, some expect Italy to keep pushing Spain to seek a bailout as it would lower borrowing costs for other peripheral euro zone countries.

Word on Windows 8

Now that Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) has released Windows 8, the guessing games have begun. First is whether mixed reviews of the product will slow its adoption. The pricing of Windows may offset negative press. Upgrades to Windows 8 cost as little as $39. Some PC owners will make the upgrade just to see what the new product is like. Microsoft?s larger hurdle may be businesses that worry about training employees and setting up IT support for more than one operating system. Analysts?also will watch whether sales of Windows 8-enabled portable devices will do well. This begins with Microsoft?s own Surface tablet but will soon spread to Microsoft partner product sales. The first of those will be Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK). Sales data about Windows 8 will not be uniform around the world. Data about activity in places like Africa and India already have begun to reach the media. Since sales data for the United States are not yet available, any straw of information will increase the speculation about the eventual fate of the new Microsoft product.

2013 BMW X1 Video First Drive - The Car Connection

When it finally lands on U.S. shores this winter, the BMW X1 will have maneuvered itself into a tight parking spot--wedged narrowly between the most feature-rich mass-market crossovers, and BMW's own more practical, more expensive X3 ute.

The X1's been on sale for a few years around the world, but BMW waited to bring it here until our new X3--the current South Carolina-built one--went on sale, and until it found enough global production capacity to serve America.

Now with just enough space made for the X1 in the lineup, it's up to car buyers to decide if they've made enough brand space for the luxury crossover--if it's the right step up from a smaller sedan, or maybe too much downsizing from a larger SUV.

That's the question that's circled around the X1 since our first drive, a few hours spent with a four-cylinder all-wheel-drive model during this year's North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year driving (where I serve on the 50-journalist jury). The X1 undoubtedly has the usual BMW virtues in its corner, with deft handling at the top of the list--but does it offer up enough utility to make it a better choice than something bigger and possibly cheaper?

The X1 blends more easily in with BMW's car lineup, even than its bigger crossovers--which veer hard out of the way of the usual butch SUV styling memes. Its height and ground clearance get disguised with glassy hatchback cues, and even the tall nose melts away into artfully elongated headlamps. Minus the slightly bulging wheel wells, the X1 almost could qualify as a 3-Series hatchback.

That's hardly a stretch, since some of the X1's running gear is derived from the previous generation of 3-Series vehicles. The 2.0-liter turbo four is BMW's latest, with direct injection and gutsy acceleration to 60 mph in about 6.3 seconds. It's coupled to an eight-speed automatic with paddle shift controls that defy other automakers' logic--that paddles don't belong in utility vehicles. Underneath, this X1 offers either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, as an sDrive28i or an xDrive28i, with one key difference--electric or hydraulic power steering, respectively. We've only driven the latter, with optional variable-ratio Servotronic control, and find it hard to find fault. With independent suspension all around, the X1 has more body roll but completely carlike road manners. On 18-inch wheels and tires, it held its composure on truly terrible road surfaces, too.

There's another X1 available--a 300-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter in-line six model with xDrive, with optional M Sport add-ons that bring variable-torque-split xDrive (also available on the four-cylinder). We haven't yet driven this version, so stay tuned. And we weren't able to drive the X1 off-road at all, save for some Michigan-style gravel and dirt side roads. We suspect that's the most any owner will encounter, too.

Performance is in line with BMW standards, but interior space is at the small end for any BMW product aside--Z4 aside, of course. In front there's fine leg and head room, but width cuts down on console space so much, a second cupholder has to hang off the console's side. The back seat is an abbreviated space, with only enough leg room for short trips toting four adults, though two kids in back find plenty of space. The rear seats do a better job at getting out of the way for cargo, reclining and folding nearly flat.

The X1 hasn't been crash-tested yet--but while it gets the mandatory safety gear, it doesn't have standard Bluetooth or a rearview camera, features you'll find in most sub-$20,000 sedans. It does offer a standard USB port; power features; automatic climate control; and HD radio. The options list shows a panoramic glass roof; mobile-app connectivity; satellite radio; a cold-weather package; and Harmon Kardon audio.

We'll revisit the X1 once we set up seat time in the six-cylinder model. For now, we've given it some preliminary ratings and put down as much as we can in our usual long-form review. Watch the video here for a quick look--and for more, see our full review of the 2013 BMW X1.

Turkish police use tear gas against demonstration

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Police used tear gas and water cannons against a demonstration by tens of thousands of pro-secular protesters, but Monday's march to mark the founding of the Turkish republic went on in defiance of a government ban.

The Republic Day celebrations have in the past few years become a symbol of the divide between Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's elected, Islamic-leaning government and its opponents who fear the country's secular traditions are in danger.

The Ankara governor's office last week denied authorization for the march, citing security reasons, and declared the gathering illegal.

Challenging the ban, tens of thousands of people assembled in the old part of Ankara, near the building housing Turkey's first parliament, to march to the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who founded the secular republic 89 years ago after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Government officials, meanwhile, marked the day with an official celebration and parade at a hippodrome, 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) away.

Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters who tried to break through police lines, before a barricade was lifted and the demonstrators proceeded to march, waving Turkish flags and carrying posters of Ataturk.

They chanted: "We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal!" and "Turkey is secular and will remain secular!" and dispersed peacefully after reaching the mausoleum. There was no report of any arrest or injury.

There were conflicting reports however, about whether the demonstrators had broken past the barricades or the government had ordered the barricades to be lifted. The march was supported by the main opposition party, whose leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, briefly took refuge in a nearby military guest house to escape the tear gas.

Under Erdogan's leadership over the past decade, Turkey has boosted economic growth, raised its international profile and reduced the power of the military which had staged three coups since the 1960s. But serious concerns remain about public rights and freedoms in the country.

Hundreds of people, including politicians, academics and military officers, have been jailed, accused of plotting to overthrow the government, in trials that have been marred by judicial irregularities and lengthy detention periods. Last week, the media advocacy group, Committee to Protect Journalists, accused Turkey of waging the "world's biggest crackdown" on media freedoms and said at least 61 journalists are in prison for their published work or newsgathering activities.

On Monday, the media and opposition politicians said police had prevented several buses carrying demonstrators from traveling to Ankara to take part in the march.

The Republic Day celebrations have long been a source of tension in the country. Until two years ago, military leaders and other secularists shunned Republic Day receptions at the presidential palace to protest of the president's wife who wears an Islamic-style headscarf. That forced President Abdullah Gul to hold two separate receptions: a midday one attended by military officers and other VIPs without their wives, and one in the evening during which women in headscarves were commonly seen.

The opposition to Islamic headscarves has since eased off, and Gul now hosts a single reception.

Android 4.2 Brings Polish to the Jelly Bean Experience

The new Nexus devices Google announced on Monday will all ship running Android 4.2, a new flavor of Jelly Bean.

[More from Mashable: Google?s Nexus 4 Smartphone Brings Quad Core and Android 4.2]

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was released at Google I/O back in June and has slowly, but surely, been making its way to new and existing devices. One of the hallmark features of Jelly Bean is what Google calls "Project Butter" -- which brings a much more responsive and fluid user experience to the device.

With Android 4.2, Google isn't offering up a new name -- instead, it's finessing Jelly Bean further.

[More from Mashable: When Will We See the Final Version of HTML5?]

Here are some of the new features users can look forward to in Android 4.2:

  • New Photo Sphere Camera -- Similar to the Panoramic mode Apple introduced in iOS 6, Google is introducing what it calls photo spheres to Jelly Bean 4.2. The "spheres" are shareable and can be added to Google Maps.
  • Gesture Typing -- Google has overhauled the keyboard in Android 4.2 and added a stock SwiftKey-like input method. Like SwiftKey, users just glide their fingers across letters rather than having to type them one by one.

I'm an iPhone user, but when I use Android devices, I always install SwiftKey because it makes me a much faster typist. Having this sort of functionality as part of the stock Android experience is awesome.

  • Multiple Users -- Tablets aren't just personal devices -- they are often shared between family members. The problem is, each person might have their own choice of apps, email accounts and other settings. With Android 4.2, Google is bringing multiple user profiles to the OS. Multi-user support will only work with Android tablets.
  • Wireless TV Display -- Google is enabling AirPlay-like wireless video playback that will let users push content from a phone or tablet onto a TV. Sadly, Google isn't using DLNA and is instead going to require users to purchase a wireless display adaptor. Another difference is that content will be mirrored onto another device, rather than displayed as secondary screen.
  • Daydream -- Google will allow users to customize what Android shows on the screen while a device is docked or idle. This means it can show photos or display the news.
  • Expandable Notifications -- Android's notifications clearly "inspired" Apple when the company introduced the Notification Center in iOS 5. Turnabout is fair play because Google is now taking some cues from iOS 6 with its new actionable notifications. Android 4.2 will feature a new notifications shade and allow users to take action directly from that shade.

We won't know more about Android 4.2 until we get it on some test hardware -- but the improvements look great.

I think it's telling that Google didn't change the name for Android 4.2. It's still Jelly Bean, just a more refined version of Jelly Bean. This is the best indicator yet that Android as a platform is becoming more stable.

This doesn't mean that the pace of innovation is slowing down -- but it does mean that the Android team is focusing more on finessing core features, rather than simply introducing more stuff.

Android 4.1 was the first version of the OS that felt really "complete." With 4.2, it looks like Google is focusing on the polish and the finish. That can only lead to better overall device and application experiences.

What parts of Android 4.2 are you most excited about? Let us know in the comments.
