Convicted embezzler's husband files for divorce | Stamford Divorce ...

The husband of a woman who has been convicted of embezzling from town tax coffers has decided to file for divorce. The Oxford man has decided to call it quits on the 23-year marriage because of his wife's illegal actions, which have caused an irrevocable rift between the two, according to legal documents. The man is also seeking a substantial portion of his wife's estate in connection with the high-asset divorce, despite the fact that the town has already put a lien on property and personal holdings.

Courtroom documents indicate that the primary asset the man is seeking to secure is his portion of the couple's home, which is valued at about $700,000.

According to the woman's legal counsel, she is facing about five years' prison time in connection with the embezzlement activity. She entered a guilty plea in late July, and her husband had reportedly stood with her throughout the arduous courtroom proceedings. The 63-year-old woman had accepted a plea deal with the state that would allow the discharge of several forgery charges, leaving only a charge of larceny.

The woman must also repay the town about $250,000 in connection with the incident. That money is restitution for the funds she took from the local government, according to legal experts.

The woman's defense team said that she misappropriated funds during 2008 and 2009. A three-member committee later determined that the woman had taken about $700,000 in connection with her embezzlement plan.

This particular divorce situation is difficult to predict, largely because the woman's assets are being held as legal evidence in support of a criminal case. Her soon-to-be ex-husband will likely face an uphill battle against the township from which the woman embezzled. Although he believes the assets to be his, local government leaders may think otherwise. It is not clear whether the town will release the lien on the couple's property in order for the man to make his claims.
